I went to look something up about what was happening in Djbouti. (Link to one of the sites I visited is below.) I can understand why you are not thrilled, as a mother. It does not sound as if it will be boring, however! I think I am going to have to do a whole lot more reading to try to find out what dynamics are actually at work behind the scenes. I know your sons often cannot tell you everything they do, but even from a small amount of information, you may be able to educate all of us!

I have been researching a ton about what they do there and most of it none of us can know. Pretty much all I know is where he is going and not even exactly where yet. But investigation leads to only a couple places. ;)2 The Intercept had a good article about the base and some information. It is the main US location in Africa and the drone programs for all of the ME are operated from there. His job will be on one of the teams and that is as much as I will ever know.

I want to add that I am also conflicted about the drone programs in general when they are used for bombings. I understand it is to keep our military out of harms way but it still bothers me. I wish we weren't involved in so many conflicts around the world. I do not have any reservations about surveillance and intelligence collection though.

Sending dust around him. So far things seem very calm in this country, but of course Africa is the last place to SELL Chinese and Russian products to. It's certainly strategic. If my kid had to go to this part of the world I wouldn't like this country like you but so far it's all about jockeying to get positioning for trade, war I suppose, and of course profit.
