Excerpted from "The Washington Post"

"Trump aides lay foundation for emergency order to build wall, saying border is in ‘crisis’"

By Robert Costa and
Philip Rucker
January 7 at 8:10 PM
"Trump administration officials made an urgent case Monday that the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border has reached a crisis level, laying the groundwork for President Trump to possibly declare a national emergency that would empower him to construct a border wall without congressional approval.

With the federal government partially shut down amid his stalemate with Congress, Trump will attempt to bolster the administration’s position Tuesday by delivering a prime-time televised address to the nation from the Oval Office — the first of his presidency. He will then travel Thursday to visit the nation’s southern border.

'There is a humanitarian and national security crisis,' Vice President Pence told reporters Monday, a line that he and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen repeated several times. Pence also said he expected attempted crossings by undocumented migrants to 'dramatically increase' as winter gives way to spring.

Many immigration experts, however, have said the Trump administration is exaggerating the security threat at the border and amplifying data in misleading ways or with outright falsehoods.

Vexed by Democrats’ refusal to yield to his demand for $5.7 billion for wall funding, Trump increasingly views a national emergency declaration as a viable, if risky, way for him to build a portion of his long-promised barrier, according to senior administration officials.

Although Trump has made 'no decision' about a declaration, Pence said, lawyers in the White House Counsel’s Office are working to determine the president’s options and prepare for any possible legal obstacles."

Thanks for this post @AGBF . Are you going to watch Trump’s address tomorrow evening?

My daughter has been in the psych hospital since Friday night. I visit her every evening and I drive home between 7 and 8 PM. So I will either be listening to his address on Sirius radio in my Jeep or watching it on MSNBC, depending on the timing. I cannot imagine missing it or the Democratic response, however. I find this to be too important to the country for me to miss. If Trump can cut the Legislative branch out of the government, he has seriously damaged the separation of powers. The Founding Fathers planned our government so that the three branches would have checks on each others' powers.

@AGBF , I’m sorry about your daughter. Please take good care of yourself. Listening to a Trump is only going to aggravate you. Nothing good ever comes out of his mouth. Sending you a hug Deb.

No, not free, DF.

Paid for by taxing the ultra-rich in the traditional (that is, pre-Reagan and loophole-free) style. Conservatives do always hold tradition dear - her prospect of returning things to The Way They Used To Be must be a momentous chance to celebrate.

No?

She can go rob every US billionaires down to their last cent and it still wouldn't be enough money to cover all the freebies that AOC is offering. The math don't add up.

Been away for a while - especially with my mom's situation (I'm POA and lots of issues and decisions).

I found the video totally non-offensive and typical of many things that HS and College students do as a class activity.

As for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez herself and her positions.

Personally I like her spunk, intelligence, and ability to connect with people.

I admit that I do not agree with some of her positions; but, remind myself that I held similar positions myself when I was much younger - and then became more conservative as I aged and learned that some of those concepts did not work well. Also, there has never been a single representative, senator, etc. that I agreed with all of their positions.

I find it disturbing the some have misstated her suggestions and not compared them to historical reality. As an example - the top tax rate was 94% in WW2 - which applied to those who would only be multimillionaires today: then it was lowered to never less than 70% for the 1950's - 1970's and only lowered to 50% in 1981: Thus her suggestion of a 70 % tax rate for those earning more than 10 million per year was not even close to the highest; and would return things to the lowest tax rate for how they were for during what some call the best years economically for the USA.

Now I admit that I had to look up the history of tax rates when I heard her proposal. I wonder why others did not?

https://bradfordtaxinstitute.com/Free_Resources/Federal-Income-Tax-Rates.aspx

I'm also convinced that if we met in person that she would be willing to respectfully discuss with me my views - and perhaps she would consider that and change some. That is how real change occurs - by respectful discussion and consideration of the other person's views.

Overall, I believe that she will be a very positive addition to this country and will in fact do and cause a lot of positive change for the USA. Of course, I admit that I will not like some of what she does. But, overall I see her as a positive change.

I wish I could say the same for many other members of congress - who I see more focused on personal or political power than trying to do what they personally believe to be best for the country.

I get it though, DF. Your idea of how women should act includes smiling and clapping when "prompted." That's exactly the kind of mentality that got us into this bullshit.

She probably was sad on her butt. I was sad on my back. I had to lie down on my bed with sustaining food to watch Trump's speech. And I was wishing I was still a drinking woman.

What is she supposed to sit on? Should she have genuflected, on her knees? You are hilarious.
I still meant SAD on her butt. I can only hope my daughters and grandkids will never live in a socialist society.

What did you expect her to do Dancing Fire? This was the SOTU, not a Trump pep rally. Were you were expecting her to look at Trump the way Pence does?

yippee10.gif

What did I tell you guys? I have a crystal ball. :praise:

Her office says the plan would aim to make air travel obsolete, upgrade or replace every building in America to ensure energy efficiency and give economic security even to those "unwilling" to work.

I'll tell my daughters to start working on their retirement plans.:clap:
