Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Dances...But I Have A Question!

An old video from her college days of freshman congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was widely circulated on twitter after a few people on the right attempted to use it to smear her. It showed her dancing barefoot on a rooftop, imitating a dance from an old movie. The video was charming and widely approved, achieving the opposite of what the people who had circulated it had hoped it would.

The question that remains if why did Ms. Ocasio-Cortez become the new target of the Republicans? MSNBC commentators speculate that picking on Nancy Pelosi was wearing thin for the Republicans and The Right. Do the Republicans, so clearly a white, aging, male party in juxtaposition to the new Democratic Congress, always have to have a woman to denigrate? A Hillary Clinton about whom to chant "lock her up"? Or an Elizabeth Warren to call "Pocahontas"? We really have to keep an eye on the Republicans to see whether they are always going to try to pick on any woman who dares to make a splash.

And did anyone notice what happened to women of color who stuck out their necks? One has to be very tough if one wants to be both female and a person of color! Look at the treatment that has been afforded to Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Congresswoman Frederica Wilson. They have been the subject of lies and ridicule.

As I said, whenever I see a woman being slammed by the right, I am going to look twice, then look twice more.

When I watched the video all I saw was a young girl enjoying her life. She’s looked adorable.

I find it distrubing that after what we have witnessed the past two years the Republicans would criticize this. They elected and have stood behind a man who is the exact opposite of what their bibles tell them we should strive to be. I also find it yet another fine example of Misogyny.

@Tekate, I also thought she became a target because she isn’t “lily” white and this was another play to Trumps base. As you know, these people make me sick. I can’t wait for the day we have a president who is a president to us all.

Haha here I am. My daughter is marrying a Frenchman.I return to the reality of the States in a few days.

There is not much mention of trump here anymore. In the beginning people were curious and asked a lot of questions. They dislike him and can’t understand why or how he is in office because fhey feel he is not only pulling down the USA, but the world.

Incredible how destructive this man has become as his actions affect more and more people. Imagine not paying people and then calling it a strike. And nothing is being done to contain him. A sad state of affairs. Two years of this dysfunction!!!
Someone in the NYT suggested we go to the streets to protest. I am too chicken to risk being injured or worse over this, so, sadly, must sit by and watch...or rather try not to watch, but it is hard to look away.

I didn't exactly go into the streets, but I did get myself to my first protest in years over the separation of children from parents at the border. That was a last straw for me. I wound up on the steps of my Town Hall, which is where I went to high school years ago and also where I had an office when I first became a social worker. I also shook CT Senator Richard Blumenthal's hand. (I met him before when I was teaching citizenship. He really gets around in Connecticut.) Right now I vote in Virginia, however. Both Connecticut and Virginia have good Senators. And we got rid of my bad representative in Virginia, Barbara Comstock. I used to write to her constantly but she ignored me and the rest of her constituents...and got voted out.

No, she is targeted because she appears immature at times, preaches socialism, and makes idiotic statements (like Chump does), which is antithetical to conservatism.

Our representative was voted out too @AGBF. I’m certain it was the children separated from their families that was the last straw as well. About 6 weeks after it was news he issued a letter saying he was against it. He had held the position for 8 years and was voted out. We now have a democratic female representing us.

@Jimmiane, I completely agree with how you are feeling about this administration. Trump, has NEVER lived paycheck to paycheck and has no idea how much stress this puts these young families under, is saying the government workers are behind him. It’s being reported that TSA workers are calling in sick and looking for other work to support their families. One would think since the 9/11 terrorists entered our country on a plane and committed their crimes using planes, he would find this a huge security threat.

Nothing would happen. He would go to sleep to protect himself psychologically. He was almost asleep in that meeting with Trump, Schumer, and Pelosi, and that was not nearly as threatening as being alone with Ocasio-Cortez would be! I do applaud where your fantasy life takes you, however.

@Jimmianne I’ve been to the Women’s March as well as some smaller protests in the past two years, and aside from one that got hijacked by anarchists, I’ve never felt unsafe. I think the key is to attend with friends, and take in the scene before you decide if you feel safe enough to stay. Also, have an exit plan and meeting place decided ahead of time in case you get separated, don’t bring too much with you, and dress for the weather.

Even at the one with the anarchists, they were more interested in breaking windows and provoking the police than they were about harassing protestors, so we felt okay about observing everything from a distance. Trust your gut and you’ll be fine. The comraderie at the protests can be quite uplifting.

You're not. The whole "conservatives are outraged by Ocasio-Cortez dancing!" is completely media manufactured. Notice you'll only find sources claiming people are outraged but no actual outrage. The video of her dancing was released by a troll twitter account that has since been deleted. That's the entire "outrage."

I really dislike Ocasio-Cortez but I'll give her and her people credit for knowing how to work the media.

While you are fretting (or claiming to fret) about something utterly ludicrous, Dancing Fire, Trump is planning a speech to announce he is taking over the government tomorrow. Yes, indeed. he is planning to announce that since The House will not give him his wall, that he will make himself king by invoking emergency powers. Then he can seize the land of private Texas landowners using imminent domain and use Defense Department money that is lying around to have the military build his wall. Journalists have said that he would not have reserved so much prime time air time for a small announcement, so he must be about to announce that he is seizing emergency power. (I refuse to say "invoking".)

I also heard one radio pundit say that seizing power to build a wall on an emergency basis is like seizing power to move your house because a hurricane is coming.

I mean...when will this wall be built we are experiencing "an emergency" now?

I am waiting to see who sues. Trump feels that if a federal judge blocks his seizure of power, that The Supreme Court will allow it. Maybe Brett Kavanaugh will. I am so happy we now have him on the court.
