Hi everyone,
I’m a newbie and I was wondering if I could ask for some advice regarding a particular stone. I have learned quite a lot from this site so far. What I am looking for is a 0.8ct RBC and budget is $6000. I would like to be paying primarily for cut and then beyond this, whatever colour and clarity I can get for my budget.

Generally it seems I can get around F colour and around VS1 clarity for this money.

I will be getting the stone set locally (in Australia) in a custom setting so durability is of concern to me. Also of concern is the type and location of the inclusions as I don’t want these to negate the benefits of a really high quality cut considering that these demand a big premium in price.

I found this stone which looks pretty good to me overall, but when I look at the map of inclusions it seems that there are a couple of crystals located towards the middle of the table, and also a couple of small feathers that meet the girdle. This is the area that has also made me undecided about other stones of similar spec that I have seen.

Obviously without seeing the diamond, can anyone tell me whether:

1. The inclusions will potentially significantly affect light performance?
2. Where the feathers may represent a durability issue.
3. Would this likely be ‘eye clean’?

Please feel free to make any general comments about my approach to all of this. I still have much to learn and am not in a major hurry.

Here is a link to the diamond:

And here is a direct link to the AGS certificate showing the map of inclusions. For some reason it seems that you have to download it before opening to get the map to show on some computers.

V21 inclusions are very small and are inconsequential.

Agreed, you have nothing to worry about with a VS1. Looks like a great stone

Agreed with others. Looks very nice!

Is there a reason you want to stick with .80ct? Otherwise, you could drop color and clarity slightly for a larger stone.

With 6,000 budget I would get a 1.00 GH si stone

Thanks for all of the replies.

I decided to go for a diamond around the 0.8ct size due to the fact that my partner has quite small hands. She tried on a 3 stone ring which had a 0.72ct centre stone and a pair of side stones (half ovals) that we very small - I think about 16 points tcw. She really really liked it but it was very overpriced and the diamonds were of low quality. She commented that she didn't think that she would really want much bigger and the whole profile with the side stones looked surprisingly bigger than the center stone alone. Also she is quite an active person and a lower profile diamond may make her less paranoid that she will catch it on things. I'm hoping that with a really good cut it will appear bigger anyhow.

I just really want to get the best visually appealing stone I can get in this size range. I have been focusing a lot on cut and from what I think I know the one I posted the link to seems to tick all of the boxes. If I could get another stone that should look just as bright and sparkly overall but is cheaper then I would consider it.

For example would anyone critically compare it to this one?

2 colour shades lower which reduces the price by $1000.

I have been only looking at VS1 and VS2 clarify just to be on the safe side as i'll be buying it sight unseen. From the point of view of light performance (I know it is probably rare to have an inclusion reflected all around the diamond but that would be just my luck), being 'eye clean' and for durability as i'll be getting it set locally

Thanks for your help,
Mark
