Advice on Emerald Cuts on GOG

I've kind of gone back and forth on upgrading my diamond and setting. My original e-ring was a pave band with a solitaire RB, which I've now discovered is a GIA stone (can't find the doc but it's laser inscribed), 0.70, VS1, F, very good cut, and good polish and good symmetry. I've found a diamond dealer who says she can get me somewhere between $3500-4000 for it. So I upraded last year to incorporate a halo which I do like, but I feel is still giving me the "trying to make it look bigger" look rather than actually looking bigger! My dream ring has always been an emerald, but I avoided it knowing I'd have to get something bigger than a RB. But now I'm reading that emerald cuts are actually cheaper for a higher carat weight compared to a lower carat weight RB, though I know I have to up the clarity and colour as they show more. So I decided the best thing to do is halo it so it a) looks bigger due to the halo and b) has the elegant emerald cut look I've always wanted. Deemarie's engagement ring - https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-new-custom-emerald-cut-halo-e-ring.84500/ is my inspiration - fine pave halo and a pave semi-eternity band.

So with all that backstory, I'm looking for an emerald cut diamond with the following specs: 1.2-1.5 carats, G or higher colour, VS1 clarity or higher, very good or excellent cut, very good or better polish and symmetry. I've been referencing the posts on emerald cuts to try to get the ratio right and the crown and table specs good too. I'm hoping to keep the budget for the diamond alone within 7k (including the 3500-4k I'll get for my current diamond).

Do any of these GOG emerald cuts look good to you? I've reached out to Jon too as most of them don't have prices listed.
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10723/ - this one has a price of $5,692...is there a reason why it's so cheap?

My ring finger size is 4.25 and ring size is 4.5.

I'd have GOG pull those stones and look at them for you, maybe even make a video. Jon has pretty much said in the past that he thinks ASETs don't tell the whole story on emeralds.

Do you like a particular l/w ratio?

You can add the stone to your shopping bag to see the price, then just zero out the quantity.

Have you looked at James Allen?

Great advice thanks! It looks like the one with the listed price only has a "fair" table percentage, maybe the reasoning for the price. I'll see if Jon can make a video for me. It's so hard to buy a diamond, more so an emerald cut one. I prefer a length width ratio closet to 1.5 but wouldn't mind one closer to 1.3% (like Dee Marie's). I'll look at JA too.

P.S. I love your halo. :)

I have an EC as well, from JA, although I have purchased from GOG before as well and can't say enough good things about them!

I am currently working with GOG on emerald cuts (currently had a round stone in a halo as well that I am consigning with GOG). They ordered stones for me and made a video, I did have to pay 100.00 deposit towards the purchase though. It sounds like you already know Jon so maybe you can reach out to him and ask if they already have videos on some of the stones you are considering? Good luck-it is so exciting!

Artdecolover - you and I are in the same boat then! I was thinking about consignment...did they gave you an approx price they think they could sell it for? How long will it take them to sell? What size of emerald cut are you going for? It's very exciting indeed!

Their recommendation was to list it for $8,000.00. I'm
Not exactly sure on the new emerald cut but Ideally I would like a non halo set emerald cut 1.50 carats or close to it with a longer lxW ratio. I like the Art Deco rings I see on antique sites that have 1.5-1.75 length to width ratios.

Did they source those stones for you, or were they just the ones on their site?

Cause I don't like 1 and 3. While 2 is nice... but I can understand wanting a larger diamond than that.

Have them source some stones for you. That's GOG's strength.

gypsy always has great advice!

and redroze-we have the same finger size so I would love to see which size EC you choose :-) keep me posted!

They were on the site . Ok good to know!! Thanks gypsy . Any thoughts on this whiteflash one? Seems to tick all the boxes and the price isn't bad!

Art Deco I feel like we are living parallel lives! The 8k...how big is your ering diamond? I sent Jon a note to see if I can also consign my ring. Don't you feel naked without it?

Stock picture on the WF stone, not actual stone. It's not in house. GOG can call that one in for you too.

redroze- yes on the parallel lives lol!
My erring is center stone 1.72 and halo is 1.5 -It feels weirdly exciting to be without it lol! I guess because I was sort of shocked when my husband suggested if I wanted an EC asmy ering why not sell this and put it towards it. To answer your other question, they really have no idea how long it would take to sell-they said sometimes its two days and sometimes two years but because its a round stone in a halo that they really think is beautiful, they were hopeful. Like I mentioned, they also said I might get a quicker sale if I am willing to sell the stone and setting separately - I am not ready to do that but will consider if I must. Let me know what you decide to do-GOG is so great to work with, do you live locally?

Nope Canada. I saw your ring listing it is gorgeous!! The heart wants what it wants though. I always wanted an EC and was similarly shocked when hubby was fine as long as we had funds. I wore my wedding band while preggers and it is kind of liberating!

Oh I see thanks Gypsy!!

I could've written your exact post myself! I'm excited to follow your story and see what you pick!

Ditto artdeco!

Definitely ask GOG to call in some stones for you. I did that a year ago when I needed an asscher to fit a halo setting I bought last year. They found me a gorgeous stone and I would use them again if I wanted an emerald cut (which I actually would adore if that money tree in the back yard would just start blooming!).

One important thing....I think you can go lower in color for an emerald cut. I agree with VS1. But I have seen another PS member's I color EC and truly it looked great! Last summer I had the opportunity to see a very large (like 6 ct.) EC in J color, and I realized I would also be able to handle J color. I have another PS friend who has K color and it is also gorgeous! But my personal preference is I color but possibly J in a large stone. You'll be able to get more size if you expand your parameters to H-I. I did get H color in my asscher. All my stones used to be F-H but now I am more at H-I color and it has allowed me to go much larger. The stone in my avatar pic is 2.3 cts and I color and I love it. So I wouldn't hesitate going to I color.

I agree on both counts - have them call stones in for you.

And my EC is a J color, and it is beautiful - and I was a die-hard DEFG color fan. It isn't at all yellow (I had an L color AVC at one point and it was too tinted for me). But this J faces up very white; the only time I can really see body color is in direct sunlight, and even then I'd describe it as "personality".

Wow thanks guys! I'm waiting on pins and needles for GOg to reply to my email. My biggest concern now is selling my current diamond to fund the new EC. Maybe I should sell to local dealer for $35-4 k... From quick searches online it looks like that amount is reasonable.

I'll increase my search parameters to include H and I.

That local dealer probably was counting on you buying a replacement from them, however, it certainly would be fine to ask! You also can post it for sale on Loupetroop.com and then post a thread in the Pre-loved section of this forum. The ring is very pretty so it might sell as a whole. But if you want to buy a new stone right away, I am sure you can sell it.

Glad you will consider a lower color! The more size the better in an emerald cut!

It's actually a gorgeous little ring. I feel a bit mad (in the British terminology) to sell it. But what is more insane and illogical than wanting a diamond? I'm like a moth to a flame and I will figure out how to get it without getting burned!

I love the samples of I j k
I would've never known that diamonds by Lauren was a k?! Wow! Thanks for sharing those links-

Insane I tell you! Oddly selling my ring feels like getting a haircut. I want to but I'm scared I'll miss my old hair. Only diamonds don't grow back.

You can go down to VS2 with GOG screening for eyeclean for you.

Also, color is personal. To be conservative most will not go down past H. I personally would be okay with slight warmth so I could go warmer, but I do recommend viewing them before setting if you do, just to make sure it suits.

Finally. Call GOG if you don't hear back in 24 hours. Emails get lost even with the best vendors. Don't rely on email alone.

Good point Gypsy. I'm admittedly more color sensitive than most, and will stuck to a G. I see a hint of warmth in my above photo which is weird as it's a F...think it's the way light hits it. I don't need icy white but prefer less yellow.

It's not yellow. It's like the difference between a cold white and a warm white. It's very subtle in some light. A bit more noticable in others.

You REALLY don't have to stick to G though. H is going to be fine. And will give you more options.

As for the F looking warm. That's just reflection. Even a D will do that. Diamonds reflect. If you wear a yellow or really beige shirt or the walls around you are that color, or something else you'll get that. Trust me. Diamonds reflect and they aren't going to look pure white in all circumstances. And you don't want them to. You want them to reflect.

Would you consider selling the setting alone? I might be interested. :)

I might ecf!! I'm still waiting to hear back from GOG. If I am planning to sell the setting alone I'll post it on PS. Thanks so much!

Just an update...I've reached out to various diamond vendors and based on my budget and the amount I can sell my diamond for, I've had a change in direction. I'm going to keep my current setting and upgrade to a 1 carat round. Still blingy especially with my setting which I love, just not with my current diamond. Thanks all and good luck with the EC hunt art deco!
