A friend had recommended me to come on this website after having a horrible experience with a local jeweler and having it remedied by you folks.

I don't know anything about diamonds, but I can say that my budget is roughly 20-25. I've found that for someone like me, it's been overwhelming on the amount of detail that goes into buying a gem.

I guess what I'm asking is that if I am going to purchase from a large reputable dealer such as JA/BN, am I getting what I pay for?

Thank you in advance.

You will get what you pay for from any of the PS-recommended vendors, with great upgrade and returns policies, and no chance of getting ripped off:

Please let us know:

- max budget - 25k USD?
- your timescales for purchase
- the order of your priorities - diamond size, colour, clarity?

- the preferences of the person you are buying for (if you know):

-- metal (platinum, white gold, yellow gold, rose gold),
-- diamond shape (modern round, vintage round, cushion, emerald, asscher, pear, marquise, trillion, radiant, oval, peruzzi...)
-- if they are colour-sensitive / prefer colourless diamonds.

(Have you spoken with the person it is being bought for? Do they have pinterest or similar?)

We can help you, do not worry! :)

Yes, 25k USD for my max, but I'd like to stay around 20 if it's comparable.

- your timescales for purchase
As soon as possible.

- the order of your priorities - diamond size, colour, clarity?
Size as a priority, color/clarity as secondaries.

- the preferences of the person you are buying for (if you know):
I really don't know her preferences.

-- metal (platinum, white gold, yellow gold, rose gold),
I plan on buying the cheapest silver band for now and she can choose band she likes afterwards.

-- diamond shape (modern round, vintage round, cushion, emerald, asscher, pear, marquise, trillion, radiant, oval, peruzzi...)
I know this doesn't help, but something square. I personally do not have a preference but likely something assher/princess/cushion.

-- if they are colour-sensitive / prefer colourless diamonds.
I'd prefer to have something colourless.

She doesn't have a pinterest but what I can do is snap a couple samples of what she wears though she rarely wears any jewelry at all.

She has not. I don't think she has a clue that it's coming. Honestly, I think she would be happy with anything.

Not sure how to ask without giving it away.

Does she have pintrest? Apparently you can scope hers out to see if she has pinned any engagement rings...

Could you ask one of her best friends or her mom for help? Cushion is popular, princess is not "in style" at the moment, and asscher is a hall of mirror and a different look.

Is she traditional, funky, independent, likes what is trendy? Give us some hints about her personality.

Also, I of course LOVE a square diamond (see my photo to the left of my ring), but asschers face up much smaller than a round!!!

I second the idea of trying to ask her mom or sister or best friend if she has dropped hints to her.

F86D42FA-79E4-4C78-9D56-77C9068B51C7.jpeg It could end up looking something like this or you might want to halo it for a large face look. There’s a thread full of setting ideas.

I have a 1.52 asscher and it's a little on the deep side so it really faces up smallish (but it is gorgeous), so my advice is look in the 1.9-2.25 ++ size range fo accommodate that

But your have to know if she likes this type of square emerald cut as it is quite a different flavor than more commonly seen rounds.

Or go with a square with a round's performance.

Did I hear someone say 'Octavia'? ;-)

I agree with what the other posters said - get her mom or girl friend to suss out what she likes.

One of my girl friends is a no jewelry / no make up and very sporty type of personality + lifestyle. Her now husband was considering a 1 carat round solitaire in a simple setting, thinking that is what she would like, but wanted to rope us in to figure out if this was the right direction.

Turns out, when it came to the e-ring, what she loved was asscher cuts around the 2 carat range in an ornate art deco setting - which seemed so contrary to her personality and style. Needless to say he surprised her with what she loved =)2 So the point is, you never know what would appeal to the individual and it's safest to get others to help figure out what she loves. ;)2

I've gotten around to talking to her sister. She previously had previously had canary gold in princess cut 10 years ago. I'd likely use that as a guide versus a choice. She also stated that cushion or aasher would likely be her style.

I really appreciate the feedback and will def take everyone's advice under consideration before making such a big purchase.

In fact, I'll probably post it here before I pull the trigger. Thanks again everyone.

Omg, this is so me! Sporty lifestyle/profession, minimal make-up, minimal hair (clips and ponytails are my best friends!), casual dress, etc. But I would have hated a simple round solitaire and wanted a large and ornate e-ring

@whyviet, a glimpse at her jewelry box would be great. You’ve gotten some good suggestions about choices. I kind of like a cushion cut for your needs, as it has a square-ish shape but lots of brilliance too. I personally love asschers (it’s my e-ring stone) but it’s not to everyone’s taste; it’s more of a quiet elegance than bright fireworks so your SO would need to lean that way.

Thanks! Okay, she's a Yurman fan (or Yurman-esque, at least). And she also likes ornate pierce-work. If I remember correctly you want her to chose the setting, right? You're just going to use a simple white gold setting when you propose?

I'd still vote for a cushion, and more specifically an antique cushion. Good Old Gold makes the August Vintage Cushion (https://www.goodoldgold.com/the-august-vintage-cushion) and Victor Canera makes the Canera Antique Cushion (https://www.victorcanera.com/education/diamonds/canera-antique-cushion). Both of those remind me of the stone shape/display that she's chosen in her other rings. Take a look and see what you think!

OP
After reading this post, I am dizzy. I think you need to narrow down the stone shape she wants, she is the one wearing it and you want her to gush when she looks at it and shows her friends. So I would do more detective work to find out the shape. However, when in doubt......go round young man, go round.

Diamonds by lauren sells the Octavia asscher... go take a look and see how you like the look. @kenny has one

http://www.diamondsbylauren.com/index.php?search[terms]=octavia&search[mode]=any

He may have more in stock... you may need to ask. I think Good old gold also sells @OoohShiny do you know?
GOG does sell the Octavias - they have their own special category on the diamond search page :)

They only ever have a couple in stock, though - I believe they are cut to order through Yoram!

Yoram might also be willing to cut to order direct :) I know he's got an Octavia in his boutique at the moment:

as well as a couple of lovely asschers!

While you are pondering, here's some information about cushions to help guide you. Cushions come in a couple of flavors.
