The ‘crown of thorns’ in the middle is from internal reflections in the pavilion. The octagon pattern is wear around the table edge and star facets. The client question here was whether to ‘repair’ it or not. I think it’s cool as hell as it is but yes, repolishing the crown would eliminate nearly all of this and return it to a more standard look. I have no idea what they ended up doing with it (picture used with permission, by the way).
