Hi everyone, this forum is such a wealth of knowledge and experience. I've been reading up as much as possible before jumping in and asking for advice.

I have decided on trying to source an elusive 8 main cushion brilliant for an engagement ring. (I have ruled out Cushion Modified Brilliant and 4 Main Cushion Brilliants).

My criteria so far has been:
Budget: $15k range (max $18k)
Cushion brilliant (modern).
cut: 1-1.6c
col: down to G/H
clarity: eye clean to SI1

Ideally-
Table: 49% to 56%
Depth: 63% to 69%

Ideally square at 1.00 to 1.04 but not a show stopper.

I'd like to know your opinions and feedback on these diamonds below and of course if you know of alternatives i'm all ears.

Matt at GOG and found these first few:
1.1ct E VS2 (6.4 x 6.15)
110ct_e_vs2_0.jpg

1.1ct G VVS2 (6.3 x 6.05)
110ct_g_vvs2.jpg

1.15ct G VS1 (6.45 x 6.25)
1_168.jpg

and Chris from ERG has found this one:
1.5 D VS1 (7.14 x 6.65)

Cheers,
David

ERD stone is GORGEOUS. That's not even a question. I would hands down that that beauty!

I believe those Canadian cushions are not good performers. There are many of them on JA and my friend was not impressed with ASETs. I like the ERD cushion better. I know that finding an eight main cushion is tough. Maybe you can ask GOG to look for more stones?

Another vote for the ERD cushion. Do you have real pictures?

Thanks for the thumbs up. I have kindly asked both Matt @ GOG & Chris @ ERD looking for other strong contenders. Chris is keeping the one he found on hold & Matt is sourcing from another cutter.

Matt made this video comparing all the different type of diamonds that he sourced:
The 1st, 3rd, and 5th diamonds are 8-main Cushions. The 2nd diamond is the Square Hearts and Arrows Cushion. The 4th diamonds is our 4-main Modern faceted Cushion.

And Chris sent these photos of the better performing stone he sourced:

OMG_AMG thank you very much. I will contact these vendors to request the ASET imagery, though i'm expecting at that size they may be outside my budget!

What do you think of the real pictures @CharmyPoo ?

BTW I think I've read probably every post you've post you've made or contributed to regarding cushion's! I really value all your contributions and would like your input :)

@JulieN thanks it's a beauty, however i prefer the rounded corners.

No doubt that I like the ERD cushion better. The 8 mains are so hard to find that I wouldn't even bother waiting or continue looking.

3) That video is a great comparison between the stones in the video, but largely irrelevant to the interests of the OP. The only 8 main cushion in it is the Brellia, the others are modified 8 mains and 4 main. OP has already ruled out modified and 4 main. If OP wanted a Brellia, he already knows where to find them.

here's the link for the ERD stone which has the aset image and a video showing a gorgeous cut stone that is bright (which means the stone is cut WELL!) I have no clue who the poster above me is that's been on this forum for less than ONE day and is making the rest of us that have been here for YEARS look like we don't know anything. This is YOUR ring, NOT his, so please make your decision based on what YOU are looking for. The ERD stone is absolutely gorgeous!!!

Don't know who you are 1 day poster but I can take my guess.

If you read what I wrote, you will see that I asked for photos. Out of the two stones listed .. there is a clear winner to most of us. Regardless of what you are saying which contradicts a bit ... buying a cushion is not just about buying the brightest diamond. Pavillion mains play a huge role in the appearance of the diamond and for many cushion buyers that is what matters most.

Yes, how a diamond performs is all about science and math but beauty is not just about how bright the diamond is. There are many on here that would not touch a modern diamond these days after holding their hands on true antique cuts. They usually have crappy aset and idealscope but many look simply fantastic to the eye. I can say that I love my old cuts and how they look / the uniqueness just blows away what you see today.

The OP is looking for a modern cushion based on what he shared with us. Your two choices that you shared of modern cushions are blah in appearance and I am not even thinking about the aset. I rule them out simply on the way they look to my eyes driven by their facet pattern.

Out of all the diamonds posted, my fave is the last one which if I was buying a cushion is the one I would buy but it is a newly cut "antique" cushion and isn't what the poster is asking for. Just want to add that I wouldn't really buy that diamond because it has a mega inclusion that to me is likely not eye clean.

I saw the video of the 4 vs 8 main from the owner of GOG.. it looks hard to discern an 8 from a 4... but to my old eye, the AVC was a cut above.. but I have to say, cushions do little for me.. I am a RB stone, and then emerald.. but more than this I am a true lover of diamonds.. I could buy a new stone every week if I was a millionaire.. :) I didn't discern from the posts but perhaps missed but what kind of setting are you thinking of? I have learned reading all these posts that settings are much more important than I had ever thought (and wish I had hung around here before resetting my 1.66 26 year old diamond, but next reset! ;-) I think with a cushion diamond says a lot in the setting it has.. each and EVERY one of the diamonds brought up by the posters is beautiful... no one wants to get ripped off, we all want the best for the buck.. but it all comes down to what we see.. there was a recent posting trail by a guy/gall who reads the diamond report for the BEST DEAL but everyone (the most knowledgeable people here I thought anyway) patiently explained to him that the report is just one FACET!! :-) of how to get a good bang.. that thread more than any taught me a lot about liking a diamond vs best bang for a buck.. I mean if it's NOT a great deal if in my mind it's the best on paper diamond, but to my eye it wasn't quite.. I think it's stellar that these great vendors ship ya'll diamonds and you (we) can return them.. so I went off topic a bit but my point is.. if the 8 vs 4 main is more beautiful to you then it is.. ... the knowledge here is incredible.. so much that when I read about movie stars etc who get a 200K (to millions) ring I think.. dummies should have gone to Pricescope! could have saved 25%! good luck on your cushion.. in looking at all the pointers etc I like the AVC the best, and if I were able to be lucky enough to have 18K I'd go to GOG and get an AVC, but then again that is ONLY me :) lucky lady and when you get your ring, please post pix.. it will be STUNNING!!! congratulations and best of luck in your life together.. it's such a happy time.. I remember.. :)

Don't take my word for it I have a lowly 2 posts take a look http://vimeo.com/9188543

Comparing a non-branded diamond with inconsistent results with branded diamonds isn't exactly the best comparison. That example of the 8 main isn't exactly what I call the best one that can be found. The one posted above from ERD is a lot prettier. The 4 mains on that video are plain ugly to my eyes so I don't even know what point is being proven here. Go to 7:58 ... the one that is a "beauty" is simply ugly to me regardless of how it reflects light. The outline is unappealing and the facet pattern is total blah. I would not even consider a diamond that looks like that. And the cushette .. seriously?

The 8 main above that the OP is looking at has a beautiful outline that is soft and feminine. There is a reason why everyone who posted liked that better. These are all key factors in selecting a diamond.

However, this is not a thread to evaluate Jon's video so my thoughts here may be unfair to him. What Jon evaluates and values may be different than what others are looking for and call beautiful. While AVCs have a large following, there is also a large base that would not touch them with a 10 foot pole.

Hi all, thanks for your comments :)

how to you all think it compares with the 1.50D VS1 ERG I posted previously ?

Its great but totally different sizes....

I think you'd be insane not to go with the ERD stone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you not notice the HUGE size difference? Plus, you absolutely do NOT need an IF stone!

EDIT to add that comparing the two, I have to ask...are you cutting your budget in half? If you're not then just based on both aset images the ERD one is significantly better. Even if they were the same size.

Yeah. That huge size difference isn't doing it for me. I'd stick to the large ERD stone.

Given a halo setting, and the LxW ratios, any thoughts on the ERD with a 1.07 Ratio?

sounds great to me.
