just had my diamond set yesterday, doing a very close check right now (posted another thread about darkened center of diamond, could be another cleaning needed) but now i see that of the 6 prongs on the head, only 4 actually touch the diamond.

prongs:
1. touches only bottom of diamond
2. touches only top
3. touches only bottom
4. doesn''t touch the diamond at all, but it''s very close (.1-.2mm gap?)
5. touches only bottom
6. doesn''t touch at all - maybe .2-.3mm gap on top, maybe .3-.4 on bottom - holding ruler up and doing the best i can to estimate... this one looks ''large'' to me, the gap.

should all 6 prongs touch the diamond? or is this normal to have a couple not exactly touch? or is it a potential problem?

thanks

Yes! All prongs should actually touch the stone. Take it back to the jeweller who set the stone and ask them to set the stone properly.

ditto honey. Just make sure your ring is insured or otherwise covered before asking the jeweller to fix your prongs.

I see you got an ACA from WF? You are having someone else set it? EEK! Sounds like they are not a good jeweler. None of the 6 prongs are set correctly. Can you trust them to try again?

Actually this was what I was thinking - wanted to ask if its a local jeweller but didn''t want to offend.

Gullice, have you worked with this jeweller before or are they recommended to you?
This shouldn''t be that hard of a task to get alot of it wrong. Perhaps Swingirl is correct and you should look elsewhere?

You know best of course.

oh no offense taken, arjunajane! yes, a local jeweler - but not recommended. swingirl, i liked some of the wf designs, but i just really wanted to see/touch/get the feel of the ring before i decided and purchased... so went local. but you may be right about not trusting them again on this...

i went to the jewelry district downtown LA and checked other vendors that other PSers recommended, but didn''t find anything i liked. close, but - this ring i just really liked - from another jeweler down there. my intuition is pretty good, and this person didn''t set off any red-flags - and plenty of the other people down there did! hahahaha so i went for it.

i sat with them through the setting, handed the diamond to the guy who did it, sat right next to him as he mounted it - he did drop the diamond in his tray by accident at one point, so the paranoid part of me wondered ''is he trying to switch it?'' yeeeesh... i know a valid concern, but i just don''t think anything got swapped. plus i did check w/ a loupe after the setting and saw what i''m pretty sure is the same unique inclusion that''s always been there (two parallel lines plus a smaller ''dot'' almost - pretty unique) and i''ll check again to make triple sure after work. also, the same faint blue fluor was there in sunlight (even though an ags ''negligible'' rating). so i''m pretty sure it''s the same stone.

and the arrows pattern is very visible to my naked eye as i look down into the stone, just the way it was before... so i think all is okay with the stone. however...

when we were done in the back, setting, we went out front to the jeweler who inspected it, and while he was checking the ring he looked at me - as if checking if i was watching him or not. that was weird. then the setter went back in and did some adjustments, came back out, the jeweler looked at it - i asked for a loupe and checked that the diamond was okay. i think now that the jeweler knew it wasn''t a great job of setting. which i didn''t realize until i was home yesterday and looked closely.

so what i''m thinking about is to use an appraiser who has been recommended here on the boards (Charles Carmona, guild laboratories), get the appraisal, have him inspect the setting job, and then recommend someone that he trusts to do it properly - and just to make really sure ask him to check the laser inscribing on the stone.

do you all think this would be the best course of action? or any other recommendations?

i mean, if the original jeweler let the ring out of there with this kind of setting job, i really don''t want them doing anything with it again... for me it''s an integrity issue.

many MANY thanks to all of you... any feedback/recommendations on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated!

ps: i will also have the new jeweler CLEAN this thing!
