Hi, I am looking for a stone for a right hand ring. I am currently wearing a fancy yellow radiant (5ct) with 1.2cttw side pears (G colour) with a FG eternity band on the left hand.

I want something different but that will look nice for the right hand. I feel that as the engagement upgrade ring is 5 ct, that I want something similar in size.
I am looking at a lovely fancy yellow pear with a halo but have seen the following loose stone. The cut seems lovely but I don't know anything , anything at all, about these older diamonds.

Is it a nice stone?
Would it look good in a fine colourless halo?
Would it look too different or unmatching ? Am I overthinking it?

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/8140/

Any opinions welcome.

What an exciting project! I am sure the diamond experts/ old cut experts will soon chime in.
Will you trade you fancy yellow stone for a new one or will you keep it?

I can only answer your question about the halo: it will be stunning if it's done really well. PS member SB has her 5 ct N-O stone in a delicate halo setting by Victor Canera. Hers is a cushion by the way. A halo will make the overall look bigger, so it also depends on your ring size.

If you pick this stone, we will be diamond sisters!! I have a 5.3 ct OEC in U-V colour. The stone faces up much whither as can be the case with OEC's. I love the creamy color. It's very romtantic and 'antique lace'. I just did a reset and it's in a setting with french cut sides. I love it!!

Have you contacted GOG yet? Are there any visible inclusions. If you like the stone perhaps it's wise to put an option on the stone until you find out from the experts here whether it's wise to purchase this stone.

OMGosh...that is a lovely stone and would make a gorgeous RHR!

Thanks acinom, could I trouble you to post a pic of your setting? Hubby hates halos for some bizarre reason

I am not going to trade my fancy yellow, this is a separate project

I think it's one of the most beautifully cut OECs I've ever seen. I've admired the cut on that stone for a while. I'd really recommend seeing it in person to figure out how you feel about color. The body color may not be pure yellow, it could have brownish or greyish tones. Some can be quite captivating, but you have to see it to figure out if you like it.

Beautiful, breathtaking stone.. wish I could afford it.. it will be stunning in any setting. Best of luck and please post whichever stone and ring you buy/design.. such fun.

I've been eying that stone for loooooong time. Please post pics if you ever get hold of it. I think it is going to be a stunning piece however you set it.

That 5c UV antique round is one of my all time favorite stones. YUM!

If you're ok with the color, then I think it's a stunning stone with a gorgeous facet pattern. I'd LOVE to wear than on any finger or toe!!

Have you been able to come to a conclusion based on the advice given. For your convenience I post a pic of my stone and setting. You can find more pics in my thread that was posted by Diamondseeker. Thanks DS!! :wavey:

Hi Acinom,
Your ring is absolutely unbelieveable!
I am in Australia so the time delay makes email communication slow. I am waiting on some pictures then make a decision!
LOVE YOUR RING!!

I'm an Aussie too nottospec!! I had that stone on my shortlist but Mr K said 5 carats was too big. TOO BIG??? NO SUCH THING!! We ended up with a 4ct instead.

I love that stone - the facet pattern is just gorgeous. I would love to see a gorgeous fine halo around it, or set like Acinom's stunner. Even in a solitaire she would be gorgeous. I hope you get her so she has a lovely new home and we can see more great photos. And if you get a video, please share it as I would love to see her in action.

A good example for you is the ring Victor Canera made for Waity Katie in this thread: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/champagne-diamonds.194063/ the GOG stone wouldn't be as brown but you can get an idea of what it looks like with a fine halo. It's also a 5ct stone from memory.

Yay! This must be so exciting for you! I hope all the additional info that you are requesting is to your liking and that you get the stone.

I love Waity Katie's ring. It's gorgeous with the delicate halo. Good suggestion MissKittyKat!

You are actually killing me MissKittyKat! 5 ct was to big, so.... you bought yourself an equally ginormous stone of 4 ct :D
Thanks for liking my ring MissK and Nottospec :wavey:

Oh, no. I didn't think 5ct was too big. Not at all. Mr K did. And yet 4 he was okay with... Go figure. Man logic.

Hi Acinom, thanks for your interest.

I am currently waiting on a quote for a setting done by GoG that is quite similar to yours.

THis is a you tube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jZIJ72ZLCA

As advised by Arkie, I am heading into Melbourne today to look at warmer stones to see if I like them. She has been an amazing source of advice, almost a diamond Yoda!

The time delay makes this process very very frustrating. I am really disappointed to wake up this morning (its 630am) to only find one email.

I am also waiting to hear from Adam at OWD who has promised some pictures of killer rocks and JbEG to see if they have anything in the wind.

A question for all your more experienced girls...

If this is a hot rock, why is it still available after 2 years in the shop? Is it the colour? Is it the price?

Thanks

If memory serves me, this 5 ct oec was brought to my attention when Jon mentioned he based the newer cut avr on this 5 ct. If so, this stone must have a great cut. But you better check with him as there's a high possibility that I remembered wrongly. Anyway I love the flower faceting of this stone.

Talking about ring sisters!!! I love the Good Old Gold version. Are you also thinking about including the pave in the basket and on the prongs? I love that extra detail. I hope the quote is reasonable. French cuts do not come cheap but they are really special and unique. It's worth every penny.

It must indeed be frustrating for you working on such long distance. But I am sure the quotes will pop in on Monday.
I am curious to learn whether you like the warmer colors. I am completely in love with warm colors for antique/vintage stones. It adds so much depth and personality. My first solitaire was an icy white princess. The difference cannot be bigger.

And yes Arkie! She has so much knowledge and experience. I really value her opinion. She really supported and adviced me when I had my setting made in LA by Victor. My first international project (I live in Europe) made me a bit uhm... hysterical  Luckily Arkie and Victor are very patient and sensible people :wavey:

All the best for your next steps forward!! Please come back for an update. Also, the more experienced PSers give very helpful advice.

And why is this beautiful stone still for sale?
I guess the number of people with this kind of budget are scarce. And of this already small group, the majority might prefer the colourless range. If I didn't already have a 5 ct OEC in the U-V range, I would buy it :naughty:

The cut on this diamond is to die for! Truly stunning.

My .02 cents. Nothing is wrong with the diamond. It is probably still available for 2 reasons. It is 5cts and it is lowered colored. While many do like big diamonds (especially on this forum) you don't see them often in middle America. Most wouldn't spent 40k plus on a diamond. The next thing is the color. While it doesn't bother you/ me it might bother others. It is just different strokes for different folks. That diamond has been sitting around waiting for someone who will love and treasure it for it's size and color. Sounds perfect for you.

I would not have GOG make your setting. While I like Jon, I am not impressed with their custom work. But it would depend also on what you are having done to it. Anyone can do a solitaire or a fairly straight forward ring. If you want something "more" (pave etc) then go with someone else.

Hi Acinom,

did you ever consider placing your diamond in a yellow gold mount (is that the right term?) to enhance the lower colour? but with a platinum band?

No. Never actually. What I like in my stone is the antique feel and creamy color. I never wanted to play up the yellow and Iove creamy colors in platinum! But I am sure it will be really beautiful. Are you considering having the stone set in yellow gold? Are you still considering the french cut design or perhaps a solitaire. Have you heard back from GOG about the setting?

I did consider a red gold setting but I was adviced against that a it will suit a brownish or white stone better than an yellowish stone.

I've seen this stone in person and was blown away. I was looking for a more traditional color ering so ended up with a GIA M OEC. but the faceting and light performance of this stone was sorely tempting. it is very noticeable tinted though and my partner put his foot down on that front.

gorgeous gorgeous stone for someone that likes a bit of warmth

*bump*

Has anyone, bedsides hippi, seen this stone in person? I keep coming back to look at it and David has been patiently answering my emails and sending photos. I am , at this stage, planning on enhancing the yellowness with a yellow mount with the plan of making it look like a light fancy yellow fireball. Comments?

Hippi, if you read this, and you are happy to advise me on your actual viewing, Arkie has my email....

Hi Hippi pixi, I think what she is asking is how yellow is the stone by noticeably tinted is it a very pale washed out colour, or could it be set into yellow or have a cup added to make it look like a very pale fancy yellow, or will it always look like a mid coloured stone? thx.

And has anyone else that has visited GOG seen it?

How awesome to be matching your 5 ct engagement ring with a 5 ct friend!

I've seen it in person, and am happy to tell you what I can. It's really similar in proportions and faceting to the GOG AVRs, both of which I find absolutely gorgeous.

Color wise, I remember it as kind of a brown-yellow. I don't think anything will make it look fancy light yellow (or any fancy color), including cupping it in yellow gold. There's too little yellow and too much of a dark something (brown or grey - likely brown, but I was looking at the color overall rather than trying to break it down so don't really remember).

I agree that the color and size are the main hurdles - 5 cts isn't very wearable for most (even for my very wealthy friends, that would be large). On the color, there are enough places cupping U-Z stones and calling them light yellow - if that were possible with this one I think it would be have been done, and the price would be much higher.

One consideration - you mentioned you have a fancy yellow on your other hand. I think this one will contrast with it, rather than looking like a match. I think it would look lovely in a very small halo (though the small melee will look white, and I think that will highlight the color of the stone, which may or may not be a problem).

GOG should be able to video it surrounded by yellow gold and next to a GIA fancy yellow, which might help. Please let me know if I can tell you anything else.

Good luck!

I have not seen the GOG stone, but I can share my experience with my own U-V stone:

My stone (certified by IGI) is creamy/antique lace in color. Depending on the light it can face up rather white. In my case the stone will not look 'fancy yellow' if set in YG. Not at all. Like mentioned before, combined with white melee you could play up the colour, but it will look creamier in contrast. Not fancy yellow.

Personally I think an antique creamy stone will look great in combination with the fancy yellow ring you wear on your other hand. If you are actually looking for a fancy yellowish stone, I would personally not buy the stone from GOG. If you buy it, you should buy it for the vintage look, unique personality, creamy lace color and yummy size.

Hi and thanks for chiming in Acinom

As I said in my first post, I know nothing about old Europeans and I think this is a factor in my mistaken belief that I can make a low colored stone into a fancy. I lurk on this site nearly every day and didn't realize how little I know about ALL diamonds actually!!

When I was looking for my fancy yellow ring, there were a couple of w-x and yz stones set in yellow cups and in amongst the fancy yellow rings but considerably cheaper. These, however, were modern cuts. That is why I have been cherishing the mistaken belief that I can do the same with this rock.

This stone has divine optics and symmetry but I need to rethink my setting ideas if I want to move forward. Still loooovvveee your setting Acinom, your ring is amazing!!! I also really like the simplicity of Mara's antique setting. I am going diamond shopping today and will be visiting a couple of antique shops so will hopefully see some low colored stones and be able to make a decision either way

You're welcome Nottospec!
There are actually lower colored stones that can be regarded as 'light fancies'. I think I have seen one on the DBL site. But not every lower colored stone can be turned into a light fancy.

I am really honoured that you like my ring. I can really recommend the setting: the center stone gets all the attention and the frenchies seem to flow out of the center stone. The ring is very light and comfortable. Was the GOG quote ok? Perhaps you could also contact Victor Canera for a comparison.
The Mara setting is indeed gorgeous!! Classic and elegant with an art deco twist. A solitaire with something special which also showcases the center stone.

Once you have selected your stone, you will probably know what setting to select.

Enjoy diamond shopping!!!
