Hello all,

Went to DD in NYC this past weekend and the jeweler we went to emailed me a long list of diamonds w/ their specifications and wants me to choose my top faves so he can present them to me when I visit him in the next 2 weeks.

I'm starting to wonder if I should purchase the loose diamond online, then bring it to the jeweler to set it in a custom handmade vintage/antique setting that my soon to be fiancee would like. I feel it's much easier for myself to look at the diamonds online, I can view the diamond itself along with the GIA certs etc from home.

I would like to know your opinions on the following diamonds from James Allen:

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/1.82-carat-g-color-vs1-clarity-sku-204761

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/1.67-carat-f-color-vvs1-clarity-sku-179879

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/1.51-carat-e-color-vvs1-clarity-sku-261930

I don't think I'd go lower than G color and lower than VS1 in clarity. I would like for her to have at least 1.5 ct+. I want the best for my future fiancee.
What do you think? Any help is much appreciated.

If you're doing a vintage setting I would suggest buying a vintage cut style stone.

I'll be back with examples.

But I just wanted to say, don't be afraid of VS2 or even SI1 clarity. this does not automatically mean the stone has visible inclusions to the naked eye

You can find eye clean stones at many clarity levels, and you might be excluding good ones with no visible inclusions just because of the clarity grade. Keep in mind you don't wear the certificate. You west the diamond. Just a thought.

here are a few great options and explain what i mean by antique type cut. These arent antiques, but reproeduction cuts of them.

Two are Is, which i know you said Gs, but i thought i would throw in anyways, ans they will face up very white (do some searching on this site and see most say an antique cut in an I is very white, even people who are color sensitive)

As well as a G i found...
http://www.victorcanera.com/diamonds/g5ainl ( this would be a strong contender, as its sold by a guy who does AMAZING hand forged custom settings, and the price of this is very good, and would allow you to get the absolute best quality setting for your budget, i know you said you want the best )

There are several places in NYC that you can go to for antique cushions that will go well with your setting, other posters know more about it than I do so I'll let them.

Specific to looking for cushions on JA, here are examples of cushions that I think have a better potential for being nice:
Love this one for antique style, very good example of a modern cut antique cushion. http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/2.03-carat-h-color-vs1-clarity-sku-191574

Jj, if you like the H VS1 square antique, I would ask JA to see what they can do about getting it in budget; the report is almost 4 years old. And while prices are always going up, I know it used to be listed for about 20.5

removed... new thread started. sorry!

hey kingjer, how about making your own cushion thread with what you want: antique/modern, square/rectangle, etc.

and no way you need to make up your mind on that stone by tomorrow morning, it isn't going anywhere except off hold for you. I don't really like it anyway. Much prefer the H VS1.

TruthAboutDiamonds is a joke, I've never seen them suggest a good cushion.

Every single person in this thread has puffy heart  the 2 ct H VS1.

That 1.8 is frankly terrible. Truth about Diamonds is apparently not picking on performance. I wouldn't buy or recommend that stone.

No a 59% table is GREAT in an eight main antique style cushion. Coupled with that lovely high crown you are talking about lots of fire shooting off that puppy.

The H that Neil posted is a winner. Put it on hold. No cost, and no obligation. And then ask for an ASET then post it here when you get it.

They will ask you for two other stones for the ASET. Pick carefully, or we can help you pick. But please don't waste and ASET on that 1.8

Thanks Niel for your advice. Will look into this more. Really liking the H VS1.

The table is 59%. I'm not quite sure on how the table and depth % works in creating a large face up view. Is a table of 59% too little? Thoughts?

I contacted TruthAboutDiamonds.com and they suggested this:

What do you think?

I really largely prefer the h above. I don't like the look of this one. However if you do reserve it, the g and whatever 3rd one you like and have them at JA get asets and tell you what they think. The performance of that h far and away makes up for the slight color difference between.

Reserve them if you like them so you don't loose them.

So my gf told me that she wanted to pay a trip to GOG in the next few weeks when we're both off from work. She said she's liking the AVC. And this setting ^^^

If I were to purchase the 2.03 H, with that setting, what do you think? She's in love with milgrain, filigree engraving etc.

Also how do you get a PS discount?

I'd go to GOG first - much easier to buy the stone and setting from the same place.

I'd call Jonathan at GOG right now, tell him what you are looking for, and he can have some stones sent in for you to look at when you are there.

Ask who  PS or JA
JA. I would ask if you could get a PS discount as well as any one if you pay by wire.

Oh I love this. And asking for a PS discount and paying with a wire transfer would probably take it under 20k
