Looks like the colour is too dark for my guess

It looks bi-refringent to my eye so it's not a garnet species...I think

Hmmm, I'm wondering if it's a rubellite tourmaline. I have seen a few that colour although they are normally more pinky purple.

My first guess would have been a spessartite garnet - but RI is too high for that.

It looks bi-refringent to my eye so it''s not a garnet species...I think

Garnet is never doubly-refractive, but it can have anomolous colour-change properties.

See my colour-change garnet, and my royal rhodolites go from cranberry to pink to violet blue flashes. One of the many weird wonders of the garnet species!
