Wow, what a place this is! I have been a lurker for more than 2 years and have finally decided to take the plunge and accept the invaluable resources you folks have to offer. A very upfront thank you!

I am 36 years old, been married to my wife (who I met in 5th grade) for 12 years. When I custom made her engagement ring in 2003 I used online resources to help me find the best diamond deals within my budget. At that time it was $3,000. That's what a $10 an hour job will get you. ;-) Now that we are better off I am looking to get her a new ring that is larger and more pleasant to the eye.

So lets get to it:
This is the setting we are looking at in 18k white gold:
http://www.whiteflash.com/engagemen...d-halo-bloom-diamond-engagement-ring-3178.htm

This sets me back $4k and my budget is right at $15k total. I am looking for a diamond that will look spectacular in this setting, was hoping for something that looks 1.5ct; it doesn't actually have to be 1.5ct.

I will answer all questions as quickly as I can...and again, thank you.

Awesome! I love to see this kind of attitude!

I think that is a beautiful setting, but I'd bite the bullet and get it in platinum. Better for the long haul and doesn't have to be replated.

This looks great to me but will put you a little over budget with the platinum setting.

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3508568.htm

Beautiful choice and closer to budget with the platinum setting:

Those are my top two choices.

Thank you for your expertise. $5k for the band is a lot of money but I understand where you are coming from. I am also open to similar band options with better pricing on other sites. I do prefer to have it paired with the center diamond at the same place. I know there are so many good options out there these days. I love opinions from the pros.

Hi dkaar! What a sweetheart you are to give your wife such a nice upgrade! :appl:

Is she dead set on the Veraggio setting? Has she seen it in person?

The reason I ask (and I swear, I mean this in the nicest possible way...) is that Veraggio pieces are WAY overpriced for what they are (it's not even in platinum), and you can get the same type setting, with better workmanship, for a lot less. $4K is A LOT of money for that setting. I've seen plenty of Veraggio settings in person, and I'm just not impressed (same with many Tacori settings). Verragio sets diamonds way too high, and they typically aren't made to fit your specific diamond -- so it's likely not to fit correctly.

It's a lovely setting, but I feel like it could be made by DK for less in platinum AND fit your stone for much less. If she just happens to want 18K WG, then it would cost even less (however, I don't recommend 18K WG unless it's X1 or similar).

+1- definitely have DK or someone else make that setting. It's poor quality.

Re: 12 Years of Marriage & Time To Get My Wife What She Dese

You are so sweet and thoughtful to want to undertake this project for your wife :) I love seeing husbands with their wife's happiness and desires at the forefront. Plus it warms my heart because my husband and I are relatively recently (4 yrs) married, and we also could "only" afford 3K for my wedding set (obviously a decent amount of $, but much smaller than the larger budgets often seen here).

I also think that's a beautiful setting, but just so we can potentially show you other options: what about that style specifically is appealing to you/her? Is it the antique feel with milgrain, the details, the diamonds showing from all directions? As far as I know, Verragio settings are considered overpriced for the quality, so I feel like we may be able to help you get something with all the elements you love at a more reasonable price (or something as expensive, but of a quality that matches the price tag). I am not one of the experts, but many others here can find amazing things based on your tastes and preferences, so it might be good to consider alternatives as well so you can get the most bling for your buck :wavey:

haha apparently I typed this as MSOP and Soxfan were posting. We are all thinking similarly about quality for cost :)

Can someone post the thread with the Verragio-looking ring in rose gold?? ...the one with the beautiful beading inside the shank. I can't seem to find it. I'm almost certain it was by DK?

I agree 100% on custom over Verragio. In person the Verragio settings look cheap frankly.

I love what you are doing for your wife.

The ring I posted pics of is the one MSOP is referring to, made by David Klass (often referred to as simply "DK" on this forum). He doesn't have an official website, but has a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/david.klass.jewelry/

He is often quite busy, so I would recommend either calling him if you're interested after showing your wife the pics we posted (phone # is on the FB page), or using email: [email protected]

He is a very very nice guy, and his jewelry is extremely reasonably priced for the quality. I would definitely recommend him, as the quality will be higher than Verragio for much less $$ (IMHO, of course).

Other than DK, the Tacori setting on LT that I linked is a steal -- just something to consider. [emoji4]

Re: 12 Years of Marriage & Time To Get My Wife What She Dese

I agree with diamondseeker and the others. Verriagios just dont seem as impressive as they should for the cost. IMO the
proportions are off. I know people like the look of the galleries with the milgrain and filigree going on but it needs to
flow nicely upwards to the center stone and not look like the center stone/halo are up another 4 stories if you know
I mean. I think this ring would have better proportions if they got rid of the basket halo (the stones going around the side
of the basket) and dropped the stone down that amount.

Your wife should look at it and decide what exactly she likes about the ring(like Neil said). Here are some of the different
parts of the setting.

1) The side view of the shank with the milgrain and filigree
2) The gallery area with the little open petals
3) The ring of diamonds on top of the open petals facing outward
4) The halo around the stone facing up
5) The double prongs

The David Klass settings in rose gold look much better proportioned. The cost will be lower and the quality will be there.

I totally agree, tyty... the Veraggio settings look great in ads, but, like many Tacori styles, they just don't translate IRL. I think ppl see the mega-sized (and photoshopped) ads, and it's all "wow" -- but then the settings don't deliver. Plus, you're paying for a name and all that advertising.

Re: 12 Years of Marriage & Time To Get My Wife What She Dese

Is an elaborate setting important to her at all, or would she prefer to have a plainer setting and possibly more diamond? Is this ring going to be worn by itself, or do you need to think about how to combine it with a wedding band? Is your wife color sensitive, or is she one who likes warmer diamonds in the J or K or even warmer color ranges, which could get you a larger diamond for the same money. Yessie on here has a big 5 stone ring that's J color diamonds in white gold. There are many variables to consider and prioritize. Don't rush into a purchase if you don't need to. Also, there's a lot of competition for 1.5ct diamonds because it's one of the most popular for anniversary upgrades. I looked for a 1.5ct - 1.6ct diamond forever, and never found a good enough SI2 in that size in my price range. The good deals get snatched up very fast in that size of diamond. If you find what you want, at least immediately have the vendor put a hold on it while you work out the other details or ask for ASET images or whatever. I ended up buying a fantastic diamond that's 1.35ct or so and 7.2mm or 7.3mm diameter. I have small hands, and that diamond looks very big on me, so I gave up the search for the 1.5-1.6ct because it just wasn't worth the extra money to me to get a little more carat weight and diameter. My diamond is a fantastic performer. I'll probably not go any larger.

I have an email into DK to attain more information but I am really liking his designs on Facebook. I am starting to think I should really start focusing on getting the best stone at the best price first and then I will also have it in hand to send to the designer when we agree on something. Is that a smart move on my part? I have no experience in picking the proper stone so I would 100% be relying on you folks to send me links to best deals out there. Now that I know WF won't be actually setting the diamond in one of their rings, I am open to purchasing it loose from any reputable online dealer.

Smart move! Do you have any specific color or clarity specs?… Or are you good with "eye clean" and "white"? [emoji4] If so, I'd look in the H/I, VS2-SI range. A "high" I with fluorescence in a clean SI would be The best case scenario to give you the best bang for the buck, IMO.

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to go ahead and get a ballpark quote from DK. This will tell you how much you have left over for the stone.

(Good info to have, thanks)

I recommend this, otherwise you'll kind of be guessing about how much the setting will cost. I think finding out a good quote for this will allow the experts here to find you the best stone in your price range :)

12 Years of Marriage & Time To Get My Wife What She Deserves

I see that your wife had a J color… there is a pretty big difference in I and J color, but in the size range you are looking for, I think an I color (especially with fluorescence) would be plenty white.

Eye clean and white is fine by us. I still think I want to stay in that $9k-$12k range for the diamond. But I want bang for the buck and am perfectly fine with a lower carat looking larger because of the cut. Actual carat size doesn't mean anything to either of us. And if it matters, my wife wears a size 7.
