Hey there, I'm brand new here. Looking to build and engagement ring to propose to my girlfriend of 4 years with.

I've been having a great time searching diamonds, reading about them and learning the basics behind gemology.

I'm fairly set on getting a Canadian diamond (for sentimental reasons).

I have looked at several online vendors and have been searching diamonds for a few months now.

Recently I have been dealing with a very helpful gentleman at canada diamond wholesale (diamondfile.com). They are a wholesaler here in Canada but they are actually local to me so that would make the entire process much easier for me.

He has found me a 0.70ct G Si1 diamond for around $2900 that seems to be a good bet. They don't actually stock the diamonds and their Canadian supplier apparently won't provide them with Sarin reports etc. however he gave me the GIA report which I will attach to this posting. This diamond is the Snow Owl brand/certification

There is also a 0.60 J VS2 ex, ex, ex stone for around 1900, however he said the J could look slightly out of place in the platinum I am using for the setting. Just waiting on a GIA for this stone now. This stone is Canadamark certified which I understand to be the more desirable.

What do you guys think? I know I don't have to much info but do the numbers look good at least on the first stone?

Bummer that the proportions of the recommended diamond are not great.

I asked about some of the diamonds listed on the site such as the one for 2322 however he said the list on the site is arbitrated by their supplier and diamonds with badly placed inclusions or other problems such as a slight brown tinge are not filtered out, but that on his end he can look at notes etc that rule out a lot of the stones despite their attractive GIA specs.

What do you guys think? I am open to suggestions of stones with the same sort of specs, ideally Canadian but not as a rule.

Blue Nile has a small selection of Canadian diamonds- have you checked there? You don't get the information you do with a lot of the PS vendors, but they have a good return policy. I've bought from them a few times and been very happy.

Edit: For example, this is an AGS0 (Ideal) which is one of the safer options when buying sight unseen. This specific diamond is 'internally flawless,' which is cool, but comes with a markup (not too much, judging by the prices of others with similar specs).

Yes I have looked at the Blue Nile canadian diamonds selection.

Thank you for the recommendation, that stone looks very nice :) I will have to send them a message asking bout which Canadian certification the stone has as there are several, some better then others apparently.

And yes good point, their return policy is very good, even for Canadian customers.

So say I purchase a stone from them, what steps would you recommend I take once receiving the stone to determine if it is really all that the specs crack it up to be? Just take it to a knowledgeable appraiser?

I really like the IF stone you recommended. I'm not sure I have to go as far as IF though, did you see anything VS1 or VVS2 with nice proportions on there?

Does any one else have an opinion on the Blue Nile .60 IF I stone?

Do you think 'I' will be ok with a platinum setting?

Did you reserve/buy the IF stone? The listing says it's sold.

Generally, IFs aren't 'recommended' around here because of the premium and the fact that lower clarities can be easily found for less money. BUT- your pool is a lot smaller since you want to stick to Canadian. And when you order from a place like Blue Nile, you're only getting numbers, not photos or an idealscope/ASET, so AGS Ideal and IF are two very safe options in terms of both performance and clarity. It was the only AGS0 in your desired specs, which is why I suggested it. You can certainly find something bigger/less expensive from a drop shipper, but it'll be a bit more of a gamble.

Another option is to contact one of the PS vendors and tell them what you're looking for, so you've got professional eyes on the diamonds, but there may be a premium for this, too. Blue Nile is one of the least expensive options for a reason.

To answer the color question, an ideal cut "I" in platinum at .60-.70 ct. should be fine, but you can always stay with G/H and above for maximum caution.

I emailed Blue Nile about which Canadian certification the diamond comes with and they put it on a 'courtesy reservation' for me.

To be honest I was hoping to find something closer to 0.70ct or even larger, but I think going for a smaller diamond with exceptional clarity it an alright compromise

You can, in budget, but finding a canadian stone is going to take more work. These numbers look promising, but it doesn't have the info that the AGS stone does. Blue Nile can confirm if a diamond is eye-clean- they have for me before.

I know Good Old Gold (www.goodoldgold.com) carries Canadian diamonds on occasion, too.
 
Another option is to call IDJewelry (www.idjewelryonline.com). Sometimes, they can get the same diamonds Blue Nile has access to, and they can check it out for you and (generally) beat the price.
 
You should probably talk to a vendor, I'm sure they have some way to filter for canadian or know where to get them.

Well I like the idea of 1, its the least expensive so maybe I could spend some more money on the setting. Do you think the proportions are nicer then the first diamond I posted in the first post of this thread?
 
Yes. Ok if price is a concern than 1 and 3. But really, the spread between 1 and 5 is $150.
