So says John Richards, who founded The Apostrophe Protection Society.

I agree with his quote.
Society increasingly embraces stupidity, eschews and even disdains science, and respects a guy "dying for his belief that the earth is flat".

WTF?

Nowadays we are supposed to accept the thoughts of kindergarten dropouts as much as thoughts of those with Ph.Ds. :nono:
Now that we're all equal, the thoughts, beliefs and actions of every person on the planet is equal too. Right?

hi,

Please don't forget the at least annual celebration of Binty Irwin who is famous because her father Steve Irwin chose to show off with alligators and was killed by one of them. This year her brother made his debut into the news spotlight. What a contribution those Irwins have made.

Incorrect. Her name is Bindi and Steve was killed by a stingray. Steve's focus was crocodiles not alligators. The Irwins contribute to conservation of land and species although they may not do it in a way that appeals to everyone. Terri is a friend of mine so if you need to criticize, do it factually.

She did an amazing job raising her children. I have so much respect for everything they've done.

Hi,

I stand corrected. I have always thought what I wrote. I have always found the whole scene rather silly. I will look at it differently now. It must be near 20 yrs ago and as you can tell I never understood how the media could give Bindi so much attention.

@smitcompton I think the media makes a show of her because her father was so enthusiastic about saving wildlife and his manner of death was very shocking. I think Bindi tries to live up to her father's standards as does Ms.Irwin and her son. There are a lot better examples of useless people, I nominate NIcky Hilton, big money, marries bigger money and does nothing.

@smitcompton - I was going to say the same thing, it's Bindi - named after an Aussie grass burr and Steve's favourite pet dog... Bindi has had her own TV shows educating children about animals since she was a tiny child.

Steve and their whole family do a huge amount with Wildlife conservation in Australia and around the world. He may have seemed like a bumbling idiot that jumped on Crocodiles (he was killed by a huge stingray barb) but he and now Terri and Bindi and Bob not only do a massive amount globally for Wildlife, they have a large native animal rescue hospital next to their zoo which isn't that far from where I live.

They also bought up massive amounts of Wilderness to preserve habitats for animals in Australia and around the globe. I think they have contributed way more to Wildlife rescue, preservation, conservation and education than the average person realises...

Ironic how the ‘ohhhh so educated’ are still too ignorant to figure out that “America’s exploding population of Einsteins“ probably grew just a smidge tired of the abundant snobbery & superiority complex oozing from lefties who look down on those without PhDs as uneducated, deplorable members of society undeserving of a voice or vote.

Newsflash: it doesn’t take a college degree to be a decent human being capable of respecting other human beings; alternatively, perhaps having one - even one as advanced as a PhD - makes one incapable of doing so.

snobbery isn't limited to the left. I'd personally like to see more politicians with working class roots but our current system makes it hard to get there without money or a jd from a fancy school :/

Geez woman, broad brushes such as this do not an accurate picture paint. Don't you ever get tired of trying to ram your flaming sword of prejudice up the butts of those you don't like (ya know, like you're always accusing the lefties of doing)? There is abundant lack of perfection among humans no matter what you, I, or anyone choose to label them.

We agree on this. (Gawd, did hell just freeze over? Oh wait, I don't believe in hell, but I certainly think I felt something freeze over ). Anyway...having worked for 30+ years in higher education, I can vouch for the fact that a PhD can make people dumber. I think it's an affliction that comes from being an expert in a field/subject and being somewhat isolated by virtue of that expertise that takes PhD holders out of the real world and plants them firmly in their own heads. It is possible that some become less decent humans because of that.

I've never measured intelligence by the number of degrees one has or doesn't have. I measure intelligence by the ability of a person to use accumulated personal experience and facts (facts as in a statement that can be verified, can be proved to be true through objective evidence) and use that experience to make informed decisions. One doesn't need a degree to do that; however, as I've said in discussions here before, education beyond high school enhances the ability of one to think outside the parameters of oneself. Failure to do that, for example, may cause people to fatally launch themselves into space to prove the earth is flat.

I didn’t say ‘snobbery is limited to the left’. The post directly above mine (which I didn’t bother to quote because he’s too smart/educated to read my posts thus has me on ignore*) inferred that people who voted for our President (vs. ‘Her’ in 2016) were essentially dumb; that is what my post was referencing.

I agree with you, and I would LOVE to see more diverse backgrounds representing Americans - from all sides - in DC & our State public offices; however, reading the thoughts posted by the ‘intellectuals’ here, on social media, or the not-so-friendly or peaceful political protests, I shudder to think the reaction a plumber, police officer or pest control specialist might garner if they were to run for public office (save the times their drains clog, and homes burgled by criminals or infested with cockroaches.

*that was his rationale for putting me on ignore when I attempted to explain the basic difference between two scientific measurements some time back.

@Matata To your first paragraph, please see my response to Bludiva. I don’t actually expect anyone to be ’perfect’ (whatever that is/looks like). On the rest of your post, I agree wholeheartedly. Education certainly can/does enrich society and people’s lives in a multiple ways ... but when that piece of paper is rolled up and used to beat others without it down, it’s a disgusting example of superiority and snobbery. If voting one’s conscience/beliefs is the worst thing they do in someone else’s opinion, I’d say those folks are doing okay in the grand scheme of things.

And yes, ’Rocketman’ may have had some ‘unconventional beliefs’, but it doesn’t take a college education to know the earth is not flat. I really think that person had troubles that no amount higher education would fix.

Can someone please tell me what Bindi Irwin has to do with apostrophes? I'm totally lost.

And that Steve's stingray accident was a total freak occurence. I've been in the water with these animals and never had a problem.

Ok getting back to apostrophes then :mrgreen2:
I might not be able to spell but in real life (ie not typing on my tenny tinny phone screen) i do try with correct punctuation and grammer
I have a question ?

When something belongs* to someone
Say Nicky's bling for example
what do you do if the name ends in s
Like Borris
And what do you do if the word ends in two Ss** Luke Gleniss or Floss (i couldnt think if better examples off the cuff;)2)
* should belongs have an apostrophe?
** should Ss as a plural of S have an apostrophe?

The last letter being an s changes nothing.
Add an apostrophe, then an s.
Nicky's bling.
Borris's bling.

** should Ss as a plural of S have an apostrophe?

It doesn't matter how many ss at the end of the word, again just add an apostrophe, then an s.
For example, It is Luke Glenniss's roll of dental floss.

The word belongs does not need and apostrophe.
The belonging use of the apostrophe is only used on the word for the thing or person to which, or whom, it belongs.
For example, Kenny's car's bumper is damaged.

I'll do my best to try to remember
I'm ashamed to admit 10 years on my Springsteen forum have had a detrimental effect on the standard of my punctuation* - and that's not ment as a reflection of my friends over there (we have a couple of members of the apostrophe police in residence ;)2 ) - it's just what happens

I was born, raised and edumacated in America.
Since 90% of the film and TV I watch is from Britain, I suspect that I'm more familiar with British English than most Americans are.

Still, my answer to your question is, I don't know.
Hopefully our Brits here will answer.

No problem.
I only responded to questions that you asked.

I'm not the language police here, or anywhere.
To me many things about a person are much more important than grammar/spelling/diction.

Also, I take lots of liberties when I write here.
Often, I like to write much as a person would speak out loud - which is different from "proper" writing.

I think the comparison was being made about the lack of proper grammar and the general dumbing down of society and then members started bringing up names like the Irwins and the Kardashians and our general fixation with them.... also questioning on some level the dumbing down of societies that idol worship these people.

Steve was filming the stingray at the time with a crew, I'm pretty sure he got way too close to it, or Steve being Steve was provoking it in some way, for the cameras, and that is why it attacked him.

The trouble with the internet and the written word is we don't see the expression or the humor on someone's face
I was kinda being tounge in cheek Kenny
(Not calling you out as the language police)
I havn't been here long but i really enjoy your posts Kenny
But the question was genuine and i appreated the answer because everytime i write something like that i wonder what's right
