Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum and would like some suggestions on a yellow diamond purchase. I saw very few posts related to yellow diamonds so I am a bit lost. I am currently looking at two stones both are fancy intense yellow, no florescent, cushion-cut:
Stone #1: 1.61ct VS1, EX symmetry EX polish, square shape, nearly $9k
Stone #2: 2.12ct SI1, EX polish GD symmetry, rectangular shape, nearly $7k
Both have no visual inclusion from the top.
From the online photos, #1 looks more yellow--nearly fancy vivid yellow color, #2 looks more like a normal FIY color.
I absolutely love the size, price, and the shape of #2. But I also like the color, clarity, and the cut grade of #1 better. #1 seems like a perfect stone in any aspect (well, the price is a bit over my budget...). My questions are: Is #1 is a better investment? within the same color intensity, should I spend the extra money to get a stone with better color & clarity? With such a price difference of these two, is #1 overprice? What will be your pick of the two?

Welcome to PS!
For forum members to give more meaningful responses they'll need to actual color grades from the GIA reports.
Also the fluorescence ratings.

I can answer this, knowing nothing about the stones.
Diamonds are not a good monetary investment. Buy them because you love them- and make sure to get a good price....
It's true that diamonds can hold value better than most other things you buy....but re-selling them is never easy.

Thanks a lot for your reply. Please see the GIA certificates below. I am not planning to sell it. But it is one of the bigger purchase I am planning to make—so investment might not be a good word. I meant more like “what’s the best bang for your buck”.

As a vendor, I can't comment on specific stones of other sellers....
But I can say, without hesitation that the price of 2ct Fancy Intense Yellow diamonds is MUCH higher than you've been quoted.
So much higher that it really raises a lot of red flags.

Thank you so much for your opinion. What kind of red flags I should look for? This is the beginning of my search and I am still in a learning phase. Thanks again!
 
I think videos/images would help a lot here. fancy colored diamonds are different than regular D-Z stones in that they are cut to maximize the color rather than to maximize the cut itself (often, not always). So seeing videos and images is even more important with fancy colored stones than it would be otherwise.

EDIT. Just saw the images you posted. Somehow they did't show up before. Are these lab diamonds, or natural?


EDIT2. They are natural (not lab), nevermind. I would be curious to see the videos (360 view) of both of them.

Knowing as little as I do, in terms of the specifics, the prices are the first red flags.
It's really just as important to check out a seller, as it is to check out specs on a diamond.

When someone is selling something below market price, there's got to be a reason.
Maybe a seller is going out of business. Maybe there's some sort of deficit that reduces the price.
There's plenty of other, more nefarious possibilities as well.

Thanks for your opinion. Yeah, I am also concern the actual stone looks different from the pictures online. They should be natural. The #2 doesn't have a video/360 view, so I am also more nervous about that.

Very true. It seems like a very transparent market and I am told there is no "awesome deal" exist in the diamond world...
 
Can you link to the video of stone 1? You can put the stone on hold with the vendor to make sure no one buys it while you are thinking about it. For me personally, stone 2 (the one on the right in your original post) is too dark for me.

I am not sure I understand what you meant "too dark" for stone #2. Did you mean it has a brownish or grayish undertone? Sorry for asking these simple questions--very new to the yellow diamond search! Thanks so much for your opinion.

IMHO it almost has a grey/brown/green hue that I do not find appealing.

I can see that. But somehow it doesn't reflect in the GIA certificate.
