Wowza, now this is a bowtie!

Looks like it has quite the cumberbund to match!

It may be just the position of the camera obstructing the light.
Move the camera back few inches by switching to a macro lens with a longer focal length and that bow tie may vanish.

I said, may.

Gem photography is a minefield.

Good gracious!!

Great example Ora bowtie.

If that is just a photography/video anomoly why on earth wouldn't they take another video and tilt the stone a little differently. Or at least don't make THAT the photo that stares you right in face when you click on that diamond--pick a different frame from the video for starters. Doesn't anyone LOOK at these before they're posted on line???

Good question.
Based on a discussion in Vegas with another pro, his answer was kinda, no.
Their photographer has a fixed, short amount of time for each diamond and pulling a Kenny (taking hours to change the set up, lighting and lenses to get a lovely artsy-fartsy pic) would get the photographer fired for being too slow.

Then again perhaps some vendors only have one macro lens so they can't reshoot at a different distance and still fill up the frame.

IOW, I have no answers, just edjumacated questions. ;)

It's the "black widow" cushion!

Isn't there a computerised system for photographing all these diamonds in quick succession?

I must say, this is a well defined bowtie for the books. : )

It totally makes sense that the process needs to be speedy and efficient, but if I'm the one posting the pics and I see THIS I'd be like, "Um, hey Joe, sorry but you GOTTA redo this one." I just can't believe *someone* didn't look at that and go "woah!"

They have soooo many virtual diamonds that they are having photographed probably at multiple locations in other countries. It just isn't the same as someone like Jonathan at GOG reshooting a video. I do agree it is reflecting the camera. Those are more chunky facets like you see in an AVC center. It looks kind of like a cross between a modern and antique cushion to me rather than the bow-tie you see in ovals.

Glad I wasn't the only one to think that.

I agree completely!
