This is kind of a 'market sentiment' poll.

SO: If you saw that a gem & jewellery show was happening near you and you were told that they will be taking all possible precautions regarding COVID, would you go?

PLEASE no political/hoax/conspiracy comments.

I am not in the trade, and had planned to attend next year's Tucson gem shows in February as part of my trip to visit my folks in Canada.

However, that is not going to happen as I am unlikely to be sufficiently comfortable to step onto a plane by that time, hey ho.

DK :))

Over where I am, things are somewhat normal but I’ll be worried about going to a show full of visiting traders/sellers from other countries. E.g. There are 7 new Covid cases in Singapore today, and all are “imported cases” (ie due to people who came into Singapore from other countries).

Nah, for us a gem show would have to wait until the pandemic is over. We don't venture out much beyond things like going to the grocery store or picking up restaurant dinners.

No. As heartbreaking it is I would not go to any gem show right now. For me it’s simply not worth the risk. For each individual however that risk vs benefit ratio varies as does one’s risk tolerance. So of course only you can decide if it’s worth the risk to you. Good luck.

If it was local and I didn't have to travel, I would consider it, If there were vendors of interest to me.

Hi. I haven’t read any other responses. But this is my experience. I have frequented local casinos and Vegas as well since Memorial Day weekend. Always wearing a mask. Social distancing. Sanitizer in hand. Duration of trips: 4 to 6 hours each time. I have probably been a total of 20 times. The key is ventilation, high ceilings and keeping a distance and the measure of prescreening for fever. I have also gone to the mall countless times. My siblings recently started to go as well, because many are high risk and were waiting it out. So far, no one has tested positive as a result of this behavior. In June, my sister’s family contracted Covid bc her hubby is a welder and was working closely with other welders. I suspect that at some point they dropped their guard bc my mom said they didn’t believe in masks. So my answer is yes—I would go and o would follow the same precautions that I have been. I’m 47 and In good health. My siblings are a lot older and have health issues and they are fine.

I want to add. Some people who might say no to this have no problem going to their hair dresser, nail salon, gym, Park, beach, restaurants, Costco. etc. so there’s that. My favorite is Costco. Do people really think Costco is immune to Covid? People go there by the masses, spend a decent amount of time there and yet, return week after week. Also, wouldn’t all Costco and target employees be dropping like flies by now?
Do you what you want in this new normal—just do it responsibly.

Yes. If by near me meant no airplane or prolonged train/bus ride. I went to a small mineral show 3 weeks ago. I had to wait for stands to clear and occasionally forgot and had to step away when I realised I was being irresponsible. It's a luxury for us, but it's an income for the stall holders. I bought more than I should have because these past few months have been tough for quite a few small time dealers and jewelers. There is a huge catch-all expo this weekend that I would have gone to but we are self isolating until my partner can get tested as he was exposed to covid on Sunday and we just found out. He was exposed by spending the eve with his friend. Just the two of them.

The only place I’ve been to on this list since March is a park with my dog at 5:30 in the morning when no one else was there.

The median age of grocery store workers is only 36. So they’re not dropping like flies because they’re young. But they are probably bringing COVID home and many of their older relatives are dying.

probably not. There is a gem show in this area and it's always packed cheek to jowl with people. I am being very careful when I go out. I am doing some limited fun shopping, but I am being very careful to maintain distance. I would not attend any indoor event where I expected big crowds and problems keeping my distance.

I didn’t mean you or anyone specifically but rather generally since i did preface my post by saying that i hadn’t read any posts. But I’ll bite.
Half of the deaths in US are from nursing homes, not from people who have access to Costco or Target or Home Depot, etc. but I don’t care to debate you. I’m sharing my experience and my observations—bc that is how I have been surviving mentally and physically—and not be relying on doom and gloom articles. You are free to do and think as you see fit.

I would (with masks and sanitiser) but such events are not be allowed here at the moment (we're under stricter lockdown rules). So when the gov. deems it safe for large gatherings to resume then I will be happy to attend.

We are similar to you
I'd also be staying home
we recently had an imported case where the unfortunate person developed symptoms after 14 days in managed isolation
Not worth the risk

No I will not go. I only go to enclosed places for necessities and stay no longer than 30 mins. If it was held outdoors, maybe. I won't even go to the farmers market here if it's too crowded. I am comfortable going to the park because it's not inside and I can stay away from others. But no gyms or salons yet even though I can't tell the difference between my daughter or my son anymore. We have a lot of older people in our building so I would not want to bring anything here. I live in a building with 20 other apartments so my answer might be a bit different.

I am envious of people who aren't scared of this. My father, grandmother and cousin (who's 51! And no health issues) have all passed within a few months of each other. Gosh, I don't even remember the dates anymore. Having to go through hourly calls with doctors, having to decide what treatments to give, making all decisions virtually, and getting a phone call at 3am on whether to resuscitate or not, well, I would never wish to go through this again or wish it upon anyone. But unfortunately my grandfather in law just tested positive and he's 93 and hospitalized. So I am envious of people who are not scared. I wish I didn't know firsthand how horrific it can be.

Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry @dizzyakira. I don’t personally know anyone who has died from COVID yet I’m really scared of it. If I had 3 family members who died from it and a 4th hospitalized with it I’m not sure I would be able to leave the house. Blessings to you and your family and prayers for your grandfather-in-law.

Yes, but only as long as I didn't have to wear a mask.

I had got that show in Switzerland(?) in the diary for this year as a 'would like to go' (I've not been to any sort of show before) but that didn't happen for obvious reasons... (And I've had no income for this year so activities have been curtailed by that as well!)

No Way!

I only leave the house for essentials.
I like bling but I don't think it's worth dying for, or possibly killing others for.

But people vary, so feel free to take the risk of dying for it.
Unfortunately if you do, you may pass the virus onto others and maybe kill them - and that sucks. :nono:

I would just love to go to a gem show, or anywhere interesting, for that matter. But it isn’t worth the risk to me.

A local gem show would be nice; there’s never been one close to my home.

@dizzyakira continued healing vibes and well wishes being sent your way. I’m so sorry for all the loss you and your family have gone through. :( I hope your grandfather in law can beat this. I’m keeping him in my thoughts and prayers.

@dizzyakira I’m so sorry you lost family members to this horrible virus. It’s very scary...My 45 year old son who was a marathon runner before it got him has trouble walking up the stairs without getting winded.
No I wouldn‘t go to the gem show. I only go to doctor appointments...My food gets delivered or I go for pickup where they put them in the back of my car.
