Quite a few of us have upgraded our engagement ring stones in terms of size, quality, clarity and/or cut; however, I think most of us have kept the same shape. I''m curious if you would ever change the shape of your engagement ring stone. How do you think your husband would feel?

Thoughts?

MY Df LOVES ADORES asschers. So I would get another asscher. BUT I would get a different shaped one--- mine is very square and has small windmills. I would get an octagonal one. Or a cushion. Or a fat oval. So yeah... I''d change shapes. If I could.

I did. My original ER stone was a .33 ct round that was my husband''s grandmothers stone. We upgraded on our 15th anniversary[his suggestion] and my new stone was a 1.62 ct princess which I have today. We picked it out together and my husband really liked the princess cut. Eventually there will be a new upgrade to a 2 ct and I have been toying with going back to a round. I have an AGS000 H&A pendant and it frustrates me that I can''t see the sparkle and brilliance. My husband is always helpfully pointing out how sparkly it is. I may use my princess as a pendant and trade in my round for my 2 ct but it will have to be the same cut quality as my current pendant. .

I started with a pear and went to and oval, and now I''m on my way to a round!

I was going to change to an asscher, but hubby didn''t like the look of the asscher, so he suggested just upgrading my RB, and then getting an asscher for later as a RHR. He wants me to keep RBs in my wedding set.

I love RBs, but I am definitely going to get an asscher one day!

i''m a round lover so i don''t know that i''d ever change...i also don''t know that greg would CARE if i changed my shape diamond, but maybe he would. it''s one thing to go bigger for a round, but to change a shape would change the entire set and give it a whole different look. he might be bugged by that.

BUT i have entertained thoughts from time to time about a big ole honking ideal AGS000 princess. like a 3-4c one. i could maybe get behind that for a switch. but in terms of price, they seem pretty much the same as a comparable ctw round and i would feel kind of like that was a wash to get smaller diameter in a princess. but who knows what the future will hold! everytime i see researcher''s avatar i think OH yeah 3c princess baby!!! haha.

Gypsy....do you think you might change it down the road to a cushion or an oval? Would your husband object?

Catmom....do you get to keep all of your upgrades? Your husband sounds like a very understanding guy.

Dee Jay....the reason for my post is that I was inspired by your "Size Whore" thread. If I sold my 4.5 tcw RBC three stone ring, how big of a cushion could I get? I''m wondering how close I could get to a 3.75 - 4 carat H/Si1 squarish cushion cut, without throwing a ton of coin at it. Would I get board of it down the road? I didn''t know that you started off with a pear. Do you still have it?

Jadeleaves and Mara....we must have been responding at the same time.

JadeLeaves...as much as I LOVE and ADORE my Mother''s Ring (and all of the drama behind it)....I have decided that I am not a right hand ring person. I would NEVER tell my husband that but I am through with any more RHRs.

Mara...Yes, changing the shape of the stone, changes the entire set and it becomes a whole different ring. If you do decide to change to a 3-4 carat Princess would you do it as your next upgrade or would you try to get to a 3.5 RBC first?

I am thinking my husband might be slightly bugged as well, but I have become so used to my 3 stone, I am thinking of changing it. At first I thought it was a setting thing, but after looking at loads of settings, I have figured out that it is more of a shape issue. He knows that I am not particulary attached to my engagement ring (as it has been upgrade twice and has had 5 different settings), but would never part with my wedding band no matter what.

I love cushions. I like rounds a lot too, but I am not sure I like them on me. There''s probably no other shape I''d probably change to if I were limited to one.

I''d love a big ole cushion...my first choice! But since I won''t ever upgrade, I suppose I am lucky to adore the diamond I have now.

I kept my original ER because it was an heirloom and I would never trade that in. Someday my daughter will get it. My princess was bought pre PS days and since I have had it reset recently it no longer qualifies for a trade in [and I wouldn''t from them anyways]. My only trade in choice would be my pendant stone which means I would get to keep my princess.

roppongi... I will always (unless I have to sell it for the money, god forbid) keep my existing asscher. My fiance went through great pains to find this diamond and would be heartbroken if I changed it.

BUT we have discussed the possibility of an alternate. And he''s on board with that. So I will, hopefully, eventually get another diamond. And when I do... if I feel as I do now... it will be a fat oval without a bowtie or a modern square cushion. This would mean a smaller second diamond than I would be able to get if I was able to upgrade this one... but that small difference isn''t worth DF''s feelings on this subject.

my hubby would be heartbroken if i upgraded this widdle ring.

so I went and got a pear shaped middle finger ring. I wear both at the same time.

I have, however changed out the setting for fresh identical setting. Twice.

I don''t think I would change the shape. Round brilliant is my favorite cut, I think I would stick to it. My husband wouldn''t really mind if I did change shape though. He''s pretty laid back.

roppongi what about one of those 5c''s that WF has? hehee. now THAT is a big size!

I love rounds and I don''t think I will ever change that.

Yes, I would change it but only if I can have DiamondFan''s 9 carat Tiffany EC!

I went to Shreve last weekend (just looking, thank you!) and tried on an UNBELIEVABLE 5 carat asscher set into an asscher eternity band. It was practically a life-changing experience! I''ve decided that if I ever upgrade this ring (in my dreams!), that is what I would want. OK, either that or DF''s 9ct EC!!!!

So yeah, I would change from RB to either an EC or asscher, but it''s not likely that will ever happen.

I don't really *love* Rbs, but like things about RBs and I have one that I like. (I sort of settled.)
I'd gladly upgrade to a nice cushion.

Scintillating...

My first ER was a round, then the upgrade came and now I have a princess. I would still get a princess "IF" an upgrade was a possibility, or a cushion. Had I not received a princess, hands down, a cushion or asscher/EC would have been in the picture.

Eh, probably not. As popular as rounds are, I think they're the most classic look. I do drool over cushions rather frequently though, so if I DID change, it'd be to a squarish, fat cushion. I also like asschers too, but not enough to lose size (and "type" of sparkle).

Let''s see..... YES!!!!!!!!!! It''s the spice of life. I have changed quite a bit and had fun. However, my ering wasn''t originally a diamond, so it holds no sentiment. After going through just about every shape, I sailed on home to an eternity band with rounds. Now I will have fun changing the shape of a pendant... Oh, but hands down my husband prefers emerald cut.

I wouldn''t consider changing my round, but I am lucky in having a pear too - but would one day love an EC - it wouldn''t be as huge as my good friend Diamondfan''s though! So no I guess I wouldn''t change shape - I love the sparkle of a round.

My hubby doesn''t want me to upgrade my ering...it''s a 1ct round. We bought a .576 ACA, and plan on upgrading that.

At some point, the new diamond will take the place of my original diamond, and that will be set into a pendant that I plan on wearing everyday. It''ll be my "staple piece."

Hi, I''m currently in the process of upgrading from a pear to a RB. I chose the original e-ring so I don''t think hubby particularly cares. He''s admitted that he just doesn''t understand my whole diamond obsession and says so long as i''m happy he''s happy. I just really missed the fire a RB gives. I had a fantastic 1.5ct G coloured pear. It was the best pear I''ve ever seen, but being a fancy cut it just didn''t light up the way rounds do. The stone I''m getting is so beautiful and an E colour, 1.5ct. I''m so excited!

I''m madly, deeply, passionately in love with my Asscher ering, so NO I wouldn''t change shapes there ...

However

: if we ever win the Lotto (or otherwise find FORTUNE) ... I have my list ready:
* East/West emerald pendent in white metal
* Pokey Special -- as is, wouldn''t change a thing other than location: on ME! -- OR --- Tiger007 Special -- east/west ginormous chunky cushion RHR
* ACA RB studs

I have an asscher, and like Deco, I love it to bits...I love the look of the asscher cut, so I wouldn''t change it.

Now, if I had a bazillion dollars, I might be tempted to get a RHR with EW set marquis. I always HATED marquis cuts...but recently, I''ve seen some EW settings that are pretty darn faboo.

I have a round, and to me it seems the most boring in terms of shape, so I always look at rings here on PS of others shapes, and think, "oooh, I wish I''d gotten that shape." However, when I try rings on in stores, often the other shapes don''t appeal to me as much in person as they do in pictures. I like the shapes, but I guess not the cuts as much, and also they don''t always look as good on my hand, although that depends on size etc.. Plus I''m so hopelessly indecisive, I''d probably never figure out what shape to get! So in the end, I always wind up kind of glad that I have round, which is the most classic and sparkly, and I like that once I get mine into a 4-prong, it''ll look a bit more square, which I like.

So the answer is, in the end I wouldn''t switch. Also my stone has the sentimental value, and I figure to get the other shapes, if I really want them I can get them later in other jewelry. If I absolutely knew that I would so much rather have some other shape, my DH would probably let me get it to please me, but I think he prefers round and also the sentimental value. When we were engaged and I became unhappy with my original ring, and wanted to change the setting, he also said if the stone was wrong I could change that. He just wanted me to be happy.

Yes, I would change shapes. I currently have a 1.85 regent cut, which I love. I never wanted a rb but I have started liking those, especially in a three stone. Also, I tried on some 4-6 carat asschers, emerald cuts and rbs and so I don''t know which one I would ultimately choose. I don''t think DH would care. He is becoming a size whore too. When I first started looking at diamonds for my ering, he was thinking 1 carat while I was kind of set on two. Now, if he sees me try on anything less than 3, he says it is too small.

He has become really partial to emerald cuts even though when I first started looking at erings, he wanted me to get a rb. Now he doesn''t seem to like them at all.

Yeah, I''d change and I wouldn''t feel guilty about it. To me, my ring shows that I am married, but I don''t think it''s too symbolic of the marriage itself. I don''t think I need to keep it the same...after all, married couples change over time too as they grow and age. I have a radiant right now, which I love! However, overtime I might prefer something more classic as I age. I can see myself switching it in a few years. Radiants are also hella hard to find wit a good cut. That''s one thing I like about rounds is that it''s so much easier to find a good one.

I did change. I changed from a marquise to a round. My husband isn''t fond of the fact that my marquise sits in the box most of the time but he lives with it. He''s got a new wedding band too and my marquise was reset from it''s original setting sooooo I see no reason for him to be so sentimental. He wishes I would have chosen round in the first place as that was his choice but hindsight is 20/20. I wear the marquise as a RHR from time to time so he''s appeased a bit by that.

At the end of the day, I just love pears. I am always drawn to pears on other people, on pendants, etc, so I guess it truly just is 'me.' However, I would get a nice ideal round RHR or pendant if I became independently wealthy and put it in in a fabulous, funktastic vintage or art deco setting.
