Would you be upset if a PS'er copied your ring design?

Either online or IRL, I'd just be beyond flattered- not that I think it would be possible, since both my ring settings are antiques and you really couldn't get either recreated easily (or really at all, since they're pierced & die struck)... so any re-do would look plenty different anyway.

My first e-ring, my sister's e-ring, and my sister-in-law's e-ring all look incredibly similar. Antique white gold Art Deco rings with .20ish ct center stones, from the late '30s. Why? Because I picked out my sister in law's e-ring because my BIL is clueless but wanted to surprise her, and helped my sister find hers  and we all had basically $400 to spend. I really thought it was awesome that everyone liked and trusted my taste enough to want me to help them find something similar.

Wow, I hadn't seen that thread before. Yikes, dead horse! A recent thread in RT made me think about the topic, and the search engine is so confusing now that I didn't even bother to see if this question had already been asked. My mistake! Thank you for the link.

Nope. But no one would want my ring design - I have found that I picked a setting that is very "one in a million" as far as how many people would actually buy it. I have yet to see it anywhere, and it's mass-produced.

No I wouldn't care as long as my stone was the bigger  . Ok, just kidding!

I would not care at all, and would enjoy seeing the ring, especially live, so I could compare it with my own.

Nope. I wouldn't mind a stranger or someone I knew IRL copying my ring. I don't think I would anyways. :cheeky:

Just curious what you meant here--do you not want to post your ring for fear of someone copying it, or are you afraid to post your ring because you haven't "asked permission?" If it's the former, then I think you've made the right decision. If it's the latter, I say post away!

I would be beyond flattered if someone on PS got a ring similar to mine. My ring is unique in that most people wouldn't think to put an EC with four RB sidestones, but it's a stock setting from Blue Nile, so I'm sure there are hundreds of women out there with very similar rings. It would be a little weird if a close friend of mine IRL got the exact same setting, EC center and all, but I'm sure it wouldn't bother me for very long. A friend of mine got engaged a few months ago; she told me she was getting an EC and asked if that would bug me. I was surprised she asked--it doesn't bother me in the least! Her setting has a pave band, so it's a little different, but I love being almost ring twins with her.

I wouldn't be upset, I think. I wouldn't mind if anyone on PS copied me, but I might not be too happy if it was someone that I knew in my circle of friends outright copied me.

I'd be incredibly flattered that someone loved one of my pieces so much she wanted to make it her own, both on PS and IRL.

Honestly though, differences in metal, diamond size/colour, proportions, finger shape and size... all have such a big effect on how a piece looks on a person, it would be terribly difficult to find a true "ring twin" by appearance!

Re PS-er copies: Plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery, LOL.

RL? Hmmm. Tough question if you would see 'your' jewelry at the next desk or meeting...

Probably wouldn't get worked up over it. I'm sure I would have the better stone than some mere dilettante!!! :geek:

oh no, I think it's interesting to discuss, the old thread is...well...old, and mainly focuses on a specific incident. i'm really curious to hear what you guys have to say!

Nope. My ring was copies and I was tickled as heck. I didn't care for the fact that the jeweler who did it didn't originally get permission from Ocean since she holds the copyright, but once the jeweler thought about it, they did talk to Ocean and credit her with the original design.

As long as it is legal, I don't care. And I am of the opinion that if you don't want your ring copied you shouldn't post pics of it.

I know a few of my rings have been copied. Didn't bother me a bit.

To be honest it never occurred to me that it might bother another poster by selecting the same setting.
Coati, I hope that I didn't upset you when I selected the same setting for my reset? I just knew it was my dream setting the minute I saw it!

Since I am a "copier" I have not been bothered when other posters have gotten the same setting. I actually think that it is really fun to see how different women can make a setting "their own" by using different stones, metal and wedding bands. None of the rings look the same even if they are exactly the same setting.

I would be delighted if someone would like my ring enough to copy it. I ment [and my typo=from] to say that the 'person' asking for permission went too far [IMO] my ring was on the 'make' when that was happening, SHE didn't know that my inspiration came from the First version though  :saint:

Someone on PS bought a very inexpensive copy of my e-ring. I would have rathered that she bought the real thing, because the copy was not well made. A woman on another forum was trying to decide between my ring and another by the same designer. I gave her all the help I could. I was familiar with the other setting and had tried it on, so I was able to offer a first hand opinion. I would rather not have a close friend use my design. Despite it being a stock design, it is different from most of the halos I have seen. I would be delighted to have a PSer choose the same ring. I love it and would be happy that someone else could enjoy it. The woman from the other forum has chosen my setting. I am looking forward to see it on her hand :))

Nah, I wouldn't mind if someone on PS did

BUT...I can't say I'd be thrilled if one of my friends got an identical ring.

Also, is SG still around?

No, because my ring already looks like a bunch of others. It's unique because the diamond is unique.

Even if I had a really original design I still don't think I would care because a copy of my ring would never mean the same thing to them that it did to me. Only I would know the real reason my ring was the way it is, their ring would just be a knock-off, not the original.

Also, I'm just not that loyal to my ring. I cheat on it all the time. :o There are so many amazing rings, I would change my setting every year if I could afford it.

I read that whole thread last night. I got really curious as to what the original ring looked like

Hmmm, her profile shows last visit as being July 17, 2010.... Hey Surfgirl! :wavey:

If it were the first to use this design, I'd be flattered!
If someone copied the ring using a better stone in it, I'd be slightly upset, but only because of a better stone. :((
An opposite situation - a designer made a ring for someone, with his (designer's) copyright - and I asked to make the same ring for me - I'd never show it here.

I'd be pissed.

Just kidding, I'd be flattered unless it was someone I saw on semi-regular basis. I wouldn't want to have the same ring as someone in my daily life, but PSers are from all over the world. The chances of ever running into that person are slim to none. It wouldn't be an issue for me at all.

I wouldn't be upset at all. My engagement ring is fairly standard as far as settings go (three stone trellis setting, with a rb as the center stone and pear sides). I love it, and if others wanted to go the same route, I wouldn't care.

To me, this is pretty much the same as avoiding naming your child the same name as someone you know. If you like it, go with it!

Nope. I would not be upset at all. My ring is an "open book." The details of it are preserved in several dozen threads, so it would be very easy for someone to get an exact replica of my ring and I would not care one hoot! Sharing that information is the least I could do after all the help I received from PS members. That's how I looked at it anyway.

When I joined this forum, it was with the belief that we're all here to share our love for jewelry! That means we share ideas and ask for ideas and get ideas from other people's beauties. That's part of the fun!

Oh my gosh I just wasted so much time reading that thread...

What a ridiculous conversation that turned into.

I spent a lot of time reading it too, hahaha. I'll refrain from commenting any further regarding the OP's reaction to someone copying her ring. Don't wanna open up a can of worms again. :errrr:

No, I wouldn't care. I wouldn't care if it was a stranger from here, or one of my offline PS friends, or my bff or my mom. I would be thrilled someone liked something of mine that much.

That's good to know, Yssie, because every time I see a picture of your ering I am tempted to set my RB the same way! :twirl: Don't worry though, I've decided not to do a setting with sidestones until my 10th anniversary, so it won't be for at least another 6 years.

Awww thank you vesper!! You're welcome to it, so long as you post pictures ::)
