Would you be upset if a PS'er copied your ring design?

I'm glad the vote turned out most people would be flattered since my ring idea came from PS'ers. Sometimes you just love/admire a ring and want it to be yours... with some differences of course.

I think I'd be flattered and try to help whoever it is out. Now if my best friend got the same ring as me I'd have to complain lol

Like most PSers here who have posted, I would be flattered. In fact, I would love to help others come out with designs.

In real life, totally different story if I frequently associate with that person. It will feel awkward for me especially if credit is not given to the designer, my lovely DH. :)

absolutely not.

I'd be extremely flattered. Even if I had spent months & months designing it. (which I didnt) I would just think "yay, you have equally as excellent taste as I have"

Oh my gosh I just wasted so much time reading that thread...

What a ridiculous conversation that turned into.

I don't know what is more ridiculous, me sitting here reading all 21 pages of that thread or the whole situation.

The whole copy right talk? I almost laughed.

I feel very sorry for the PSer who 'copied' the other's ring.

One good thing that came out of it ~ I enjoyed reading Alison's (from Whiteflash) comments.
Alison if you are reading this - you make very good points!

here's a thought....
lets say poster A comes up with a totally unique and truely original design that has never been done before, ever in the history of jewellery (unlikely but go with me here)

Poster B sees said design and likes it a lot, so asks their local jeweller to replicate it. But jeweller doesnt get it exactly right - very very subtle differences, that only Poster A will recognise. Everyone else says yay, great copy.

Poster C come along and likes poster B's ring (hasnt seen poster A's ring) Again asks a local jeweller to 'replicate' it, but again very subtle differences that only Poster B can see (and maybe poster A)

Carry scenario on for a few iterations.

eventually Poster Y comes along, replicating poster X's rings. again subtle differences. But by now its been round the houses so many times that Poster Y's ring is an exact match (to the teeniest tiniest detail) of Poster A's ring.

My question is ... did poster Y copy poster A's ring? of course not. Should poster A be upset? maybe, but certainly not at poster Y cos poster Y doesnt even know that poster A has such a ring.

The reality is that there really are very very very few truely unique designs, and even those wont be unique for very long.

Absolutely not, it's completely flattering. I've seen major elements of my ring borrowed in person before and I had a twinge of "why didn't I ever think of that?" because it looked sooooo amazing! Someday, for a major anniversary or something, I'm soooo going to copy Blueroses EC with her bevel in the bezel and pave shank - it's perfect!

The two elements that I felt were unique about my ring that my husband combined (the bevel in the bezel and the second halo or whatever we call it) were directly borrowed by a PSer who had an EC. So, while inspiration may have been had there, there's always been a bit of a personal spin that makes it *theirs*.

I wouldn't care. I wouldn't care even if someone I saw every day got the same ring as me. Although, maybe it's different with colored stones than with diamonds. I would think finding (or cutting) two diamonds that look alike would be a lot easier than someone finding a colored stone that looks exactly like one of mine.
that's good to knowKismet. Because one day I plan on making something very similar to your three stone east-west oval ring with the green (garnet?) center stone. It's fantastic!

No, I wouldn't be. I would be flattered if someone were to copy my design. After all we each have to get our inspiration from somewhere, right?

Like most people in this thread, I wouldn't be upset if someone copied my ring. In fact, I'd feel like a bit of a trend setter, which is cool, right? I'm not sure how I'd feel about a friend copying? Probably more confused than angry? When looking for a ring, it's pretty unlikely that you're going to find someone so different that no one else will have something at least similar, but I have no interest in really copying my friends' rings, even if I think they're beautiful. I think that having something a bit unique makes it feel more special and more individual.

Also, I think it's strange for proper etiquette to dictate that I ask for permission when copying a random stranger's ring. It makes more sense if you're going to copy a friend's special ring or something.

Wow, not this again!?! :wink2:

Seriously, I read through the orig thread from 2009, and quite honestly, I only made it to page 13. However, somewhere on page 9 of that thread, I had posted my thoughts on the topic from the perspective of not having an e-ring. Six months later, I became engaged...

My e-ring is a tweaked reproduction of an antique ring design. My FI wanted to give a modern twist to an older design, so he modified the # of prongs and a few other details to make it more my own. After reviewing the thread from 2009, I have to say that I still agree with my point of view back then. If I found that anyone on PS reproduced my ring down to the exact detail, I would be a bit shocked, but also flattered that anyone would like my ring so much they would go to great lengths to copy it. Additionally, being that my ring is based off another design, it would be hypocritical of me to lash out at anyone for replicating my ring....on PS. In real life, this would be a different story if a close friend or family member replicated my setting. I would have no problems with helping a friend or family member design or shop for an antique setting, but would be a bit ticked off if they copied mine. As long as people are mindful of copyright infringement, I do not see a problem with using any of the beautiful rings on PS as inspiration for their own piece.

With all of this being said, I think we are all entitled to our feelings. What is equally, if not more important, is how we act upon them.

I think I big puffy heart you, omieluv

I wouldn't be upset at all. Besides which, the designs of all my things are so basic, there's no such thing as copying any of them - there are thousands of rings like mine out there.

I know this is a fairly old thread, but I wasn't engaged at the time of the original 'Imitation' thread and wasn't sure how I'd feel. Well, shortly after I became engaged, I went back to the makers of my engagement ring and they told me that someone had come in with all my pictures from my SMTB thread, blown up and in crazy detail, asking for the same ring. I was beyond thrilled! It wasn't even a month since I'd gotten my ring, and I felt that I'd put so much of myself into it, and it was the coolest feeling that someone liked it so much and was made so happy to find their dream ring also.

I would only be upset if they used frozen spit stones in the copy.

On PS? Nope, don't care, wouldn't care. My pieces aren't exactly one of a kind though. Even if I'd custome made it, I'd still be flattered, not annoyed.

Now IRL... I still don't think I'd care, now that I think about it.

ETA: I did have my sister "steal" what I had originally wanted for an e-ring, and I was less than amused by that. But, we both love what we ended up with, so it's all good.

That was pretty funny haven

I wouldn't mind at all -- even if it was in real life. I work in a fairly small office -- my sister had some beautiful aqamarine studs she was gifted early on in life by my aunt, around 8 mm or so. She didn't want them, so I took them and had them reset for myself at my jewelers. It was my first "project" with jewelry and I was excited about them. I can't remember how it went, but two different women in my office really liked them and they happened to be carrying a similar pair at Zales (the setting wasn't as nice, but they were very pretty) and they both bought them! We were earring triplets, but i didn't mind. In fact, since they were earrings i liked it because every time i looked at them i thought about how pretty they were, and i don't see my own ears too often.

ETA: i have a shared prong eternity band as my ering. I'm pretty sure i "match" a TON of other people anyway, both in life and here on PS :))

Gecko - what did you originally want for your ering?

I wouldn't mind at all if anybody wanted to copy anything of mine. I think I recently saw someone make a pendant similar to one I had posted about, and I certainly didn't mind one bit!

To be fair though, most of my jewelery is quite simple, so "copying" won't be very obvious...haha.

I think a lot of great PS pieces have come about because someone was inspired by another PSer!

I'd be a bit miffed, if mine had been truly unique and I had gone to the trouble of finding/designing/commissioning a one-of-a-kind piece.

I don't have a custom ring; mine is a Tacori that anyone may purchase. But I did know that mine was the only Tacori among my friends and family, and it would not look like 'everyone else's ring' in that sense. If someone had rushed right out to copy me, it would have left a bad taste in my mouth. . . just as I'm sure it does when one PSer copies another PSer's ring down to the last detail.

It's been done here. The original owner was not flattered. To say the least.

Holly I get where you are coming from... ;))

Here comes the but...

IF you post a ring on PS, it's fair game, as in this is a public forum....

My asscher Halo ring, was very new at the time, back in 2005 has been copied over and over... Did I invent the halo?? Nope...

Did I put a lot of work and effort into the design yes, but to be honest it was an inspired design..

As was the ring you are referring to. ;))

If you don't want your ring to be copied, don't post it for all to see...

It's that simple.

Gosh this has been hashed out over and over...

How many times do we need to circle around it??

Nicely said Kaleigh :)

And yes, people do have a right to be upset, but they probably won't get much sympathy here!

My reaction is this: REALLY? That is the biggest worry you have? Someone might have copied your ring? Perhaps watch the news, pick up a news paper and worry about something that actually matters.

If a Ps'er did it, it would only bother me if they didn't acknowledge that it was copied. I would feel the same way as this, if a friend of mine IRL did it.

I always wanted a sapphire with diamond sidestones. Deep down I still kinda do, and if anything ever happens to this ring I don't know that I would get another diamond - I might stalk Jeff White for an asscher sapphire a la neatfreak's ring. Speaking of which, hey neatfreak, can I copy your ring if mine ever blows up?

Oooooh Gecko - me too! I was torn between a sapphire/diamond three stone ring, and an eternity band. Deep down i wanted both (to go together) but i knew we couldn't afford it. Finally, I chose the eternity band, because i knew if i had to choose one over the other, I'd rather have the eternity band - i just like the look of a blingy band. But here's the thing my hubby doesn't know....I bought one that would EVENTUALLY go perfectly with a sapphire three stone ring as a set. :naughty: don't tell.

and yes, neat's sapph is truly truly stunning!

Smart lady! And I think that's a brilliant way to go about it!

I truly love the diamond that DH got me, and wouldn't change it at this point. That said, the man keeps telling me to get a RHR with a sapphire, since he knows how much I love them! We'll see.

No. If I was really so worried that someone on the internet (who I will likely never meet) was going to copy my ring, I'd keep it to myself and not post it.

If I posted my engagement ring, custom made, and someone copied it, I'd be totally flattered! Maybe I'd like a little credit if it was a really unique design, maybe not.

What would bother me is if a close friend copied my ring. That would not sit well with me, I have to say...

I totally agree with this. I would not feel comfortable with a friend I saw on a regular basis having the same ring. When my friend got married last year she picked out a wedding band I loved but I told her I couldn't copy it. She told me I was silly since we don't see each other that often.
