Hello! :wavey:
I recently had a ring made with a 3 carat heat ruby of Burmese origin. I have always heard of the term "fluorescence" on this board but never actually viewed it in person until today!
I went to my jeweler for another matter and he just happened to have a UV light handy to show me. It was really a sight to see.. very exciting. I would love to know what the fluorescence of my stone means. Does it just confirm that's it's heat treated or where it was mined? Is a stone with fluorescence more or less prized than one without. Any information would be truly appreciated.
Here are a few pics.. first unset.. and then set.. one in just regular daylight and one under the UV light.
Thanks in advance. :wavey:

That ruby is stunning! And I adore the setting. And the Fluor, well, that just takes the cake. You're one lucky woman! :)

I believe its the chemical makeup, amount of chromium, that causes a ruby to fluoresce. Gorgeous piece!

I've read that in some rubies you will get slight chalky blue fluorescence which is an indicator of high temperature heat treatment however it can be very hard to see as it can be masked by the red/pink fluorescence.

I've got a rough pink sapphire at home and I love putting it under the blacklight, the glow looks so cool!

Fluoro just means that the colour will be amped up when outdoors under sunny conditions.

:wavey: Hi maccers.. Thanks so much for the sweet compliments.. I'm super happy with the way the ring turned out as well. It was set a bit too high at first but then it was redone lower and now it's perfect.
:wavey: Hi lilmosun.. I truly appreciate the info and the kind words.
:wavey: Hi jordyonbass.. Yes! I totally agree.. the glow is so cool!!!
:wavey: Hi Chrono.. thanks for info.. I googled and googled but could not find too much about it.

I agree 100% that Vegas is the best as far as the jewelry store biggies.
Multiple locations for each brand!! Browsers/buyers heaven.
I'm a 99% browser... shhh.... ;-)

I love your ring! It is gorgeous, and the heart shape is well balanced. Was it hard to find the stone?

Re: Would love to know more about the fluorescence in my rub

Thanks Pregcurious! :wavey:
It did take me a bit of time to find the stone to find the color, size, shape and price I was looking for.
I also looked at rings there were already made up but it was hard to find one that was in a heart shape.
Here are a few pictures of other stones and rings I looked at.
I eventually was able to find the stone and have the ring made at my favorite jeweler - Gross Jewelers in Garden City, Long Island.

The heart you have catches my eye more than the cushion and oval. You surely know how to pick those reds. :naughty:

Rubies-R-Me - I never get tired of looking at your ring or hearing about it. It makes me drool every time I see it. There are many gorgeous rings shown on PS and your heart ruby ring is one of my all time favourites.

Re: Would love to know more about the fluorescence in my rub

Thanks Meladori! :wavey:
The owner of Gross Jewelers (Michael Gross) brought in a few stones for me to look at all in the 3 carat range. The one I chose was the largest for it's weight and also looked the lightest and most translucent to me. Then he sent it out to have the halo setting and a matching wedding band made. :appl:

Oh my.. Poodles.. what sweet words.. thank you so very much.
Recently I wanted to make the whole look a little more substantial so I added a ruby/diamond Tiffany band that I bought from Ebay. I really was looking for an eternity but it's tough to find one at all and even tougher in a size 4.5. I'm happy with the half band though.. it doesn't spin so it works just fine.
Here is a pic of the new and improved stack.

Be still my heart! Your stack looks lovely with your heart ring. You have such a wonderful eye for classic jewellery pieces. Shoot, I used to be a 4.5 but have gone up to 5.0 so I guess I can't borrow your rings  . In all seriousness, I have been considering a heart shaped ruby after seeing yours.

I have a question - do you wear this set more than your emerald cut diamond ring (your Mrs. Clooney ring as it was dubbed in one thread)?

Re: Would love to know more about the fluorescence in my rub

I would have loved to have you with me the last time I went ruby shopping. I'm still second guessing my last purchase as to whether I made the right choice.

All the pictures of the rubies and the various rings are gorgeous but still love yours the most. Did your jeweller have the rings in stock or did he bring them in for you to look at?

Re: Would love to know more about the fluorescence in my rub

Hi Poodles! :wavey:
How sweet you are! I actually try and rotate my rings as much as possible.. wear something for a week or two.. clean it and then clean it and put it away.
The "Mrs. Clooney" ring I usually only wear to parties.. I have had it for a while so it's not the new ring on the block anymore.
The ruby heart ring I do wear a lot more often.
My new ring of choice is this simple one that looks like a piece of tied string. :D

Re: Would love to know more about the fluorescence in my rub

:appl: Oh I'm sure you made a great purchase!! Was it a ring?
The already madeup rings that I considered were from a few places..
One from Ebay (the cell phone picture) that I should have grabbed because it was a Vintage Cartier piece and those are few and far between.
That will always be the "one that got away." :(
Two were from Eric Originals on 47th Street.
Four were from Borsheims in Omaha. I had called in and they brought in a few for me.
The unset stones were from The Natural Sapphire Company, Borsheims and then I saw most of them at Gross Jewelers and bought it from them along with the setting.

Oh gosh - vintage Cartier! We've all had those moments of the one that got away. It must have been a difficult decision for you to decide.

I have an unset ruby. My jeweller brought some emerald cut stones for me to look at. I wanted to get either a ruby or a emerald for a ring that is being modified. I ended up getting an emerald but the one ruby caught my eye and I just couldn't let her send it back. I haven't seen either for a while as they were sent off to GIA for a lab report. I would have preferred AGL but she's a GIA graduate so she's more familiar with GIA. I hope I love it as much the next time I see it.

I'm like you, I rotate my rings. It's more fun that way.

It's so true!! We all do have "one that got away." Whether it's a man or a piece of jewelry. :D
Do you have any pictures of the stones?
I would love to see them!
