Hi

This is my first ever post here so please forgive my ignorence. I have seen some gorgeous rings on here that I would LOVE to own but I have no idea if they have been handmade or if you buy the stones then setting and get someone to make them.

I have seen some beautiful Green tourmaline and other coloured gemstone rings that have a diamond halo setting around them and set in white gold. Are these soemthing that can be purchased or would I have to have one made?

Any help would be appreciated - Thank you!!

Hi and welcome to Pricescope!

You can certainly buy a pre-made ring like you've described, however the downside is you'd generally be buying a stock piece so that the picture you see on the website may not be exactly what you get. There are probably some stores which show their exact inventory, but off the top of my head I can't think of any.

You can also buy the stone separately from the setting (see the list of vendors stickied at the top of this forum). If the stone is of a stock size then you can get a semi-mount without needing much if any modification. There are a number of ebay vendors that sell these semi-mounts or you can order them through your jeweler from places like Stuller or Adwar. If your stone is an odd size then you'd need either a custom piece or more major modifications to the setting. I believe that a lot of the ebay vendors to modify their stock settings to fit individual stones but this does come at an extra charge.

All jewelers in the US have access and use commercial settings for at least part of their offerings. The ones that offer a lot of halo styles and that I think are easiest to look through online are: Adwar castings here: http://www.adwar.com/products/list?category=Designer+Collection and Overnight Mountings here: http://www.overnightmountings.com/Mountings-color-rings.aspx You can also have your favorite jeweler assemble pieces of other settings, like using a pendant setting for part of a ring, using earrings for side stone attachments, or even using strip settings to fabricate a halo for an unusually shaped ring.

You can further limit your views on most catalogs by stone shape and so forth. Many of these catalogs are just the settings and are not shown with stones set in them, so you'll need to use your imagination or Photoshop. Likewise they have only metal weights and no pricing. Pricing is tied to the cost of metal when the setting is shipped as well as labor costs and margins of the vendor who you choose to assemble the ring. Small diamonds and colored stones add to the final cost. Make sure to have your vendor include everything that will be needed in order to get a good idea of the final cost.

Don't be shy and ask away; if you don't ask, you'll never know. ;))

Some halo rings are handmade, some are CAD/wax and cast, and others are from stock settings (either eBay, local jewellers or Stuller/Adwar/some other catalog via local jewellers). Depending on your budget, pickiness on workmanship and melee diamonds and schedule, one may be a better choice than the other.

About 99% of Coloured Stoners' stones are purchased separately in order to have a better and wider selection of stones to choose from, not to mention better pricing.

Feel free to link to or post pictures of the rings that you like so that we might be able to help you figure out if the setting is handmade, cast or a stock setting.

Get the stone before shopping for the setting so that you'll be able to get a setting that fits the stone AND complement it colour wise.

I found this site - Bell Jewells and they have some stunning rings - I'm not sure if they ship to Australia but the link below shows a gorgeous Tourmaline ring
http://www.belljewels.com/Tourmaline-Sea_Foam_Blue_Tourmaline_Diamond_Engagement_Ring.html

or this amethyst one

http://www.belljewels.com/Green_Amethyst-Luxurious_Green_Amethyst_Diamonds_Ring.html

or even this one:

THis Blue diamond one is also stunning

http://www.belljewels.com/Blue_Diamonds-0_80ct_SI2_Fancy_Blue_Diamond_Ring_Antique_Style.html

This is the first website I have looked at gemstone rings so I may just find something in Australia. Does anyone have any other suggestions. Would I be able to create something myself if I purchase a stone then setting and take it to a jeweller to set or would it work out more expensive than some of these rings? I probably want to limit myself to around $1,000 at the most.

Thanks everyone for your feedback so far

This looks like an example of what you see on the website may not be what you get. i.e. you'll get *a* sea foam blue tourmaline but not necessarily the one pictured.

Hmmm OK, thanks Kismet

Now I understand.....I think I'll keep searching and see what I can find.

Hi and welcome! It's easiest to start with a stone and then find a setting. If you can get a stone near a "calibrated" size, it's easier. For rounds, if you can find something close to an even mm size (i.e. 6mm, 7mm), it's fairly easy to find a setting. Cushion cut stones (look a bit like little pillows), the same, and ovals also. I don't know the calibrated sizes for ovals, but someone can chime in. Sometimes you can set a round into a cushion setting for a halo...you'll see several examples here of that being done.

If you tell us your ring size, some of the folks here can provide a comparison of what size stone to go for which will provide good finger coverage with the ring.
