Will a 9x7 cushion fit okay in a 10x8 mount?

I'm resetting one of my colored gems in a three stone ring, and the mount I want is perfect for the side stones, but slightly too big for the center cushion. I haven't set anything in eons, so I forget if this would be too difficult to do. It's a plain prong setting with full baskets, no melee. The center basket is cushion shaped like the stone in question.

Thanks in advance.

Depends if it is going to look weird sitting down lower or not.

I should also note the stone has a high crown.

Is it deeper as well? If it is a deeper stone with a taller crown then maybe it will balance out. Have you sat it into the setting to see how it would look, that's the best way to tell if you have both, normally it might sit a bit low because you can't alter the basket part and it might look strange if the centre stone was lower than the side stones but if it is deeper and has a much taller crown then it might sit in the correct spot, but I assume with more of a gap between the centre stone and the side stones. You might need to get the vendor to alter the prongs to make it all work....

I'm guessing it is either going to look very odd or not fit at all. If your cushion has very squared-off shoulders, it is more likely to fit. If it has rounder shoulders, I'm concerned it will not fit at all. I once purchased a 10 mm cushion setting for my 9.6 mm cushion but my jeweller said it wouldn't work due to the rounded corners, making the stone much too small for the setting.

Thank you both for your comments.

Chrono,
I have a great jeweler, I think he can make just about anything work. ;))

It has more squared off shoulders actually. The setting looks like it's tailor made to the shape of my stone.

In that case, I'm confident your jeweller can work his magic to make it fit. ;))

TL I reckon it would work as setting cushions is usually easier than other shapes. The only thing I would check is whether you'll be able to see the rim of the basket. Can you plonk your stone in the empty setting to judge it?

Hi LD,
Nice to see you :wavey:

I don't have the setting in hand. I suppose I could buy it cheaply in silver, and test it, then buy it in gold.

It's under $20 in silver.

I wouldn't bother with the silver TL - just go for it in the gold. At the end of the day I suspect (!) that you have a number of other gems the setting would fit in worst case scenario! :naughty:

Good to see you as well hun :wavey: We must catch up soon xxx

LOL, thanks LD. You know me very well. ;)) I just am working on making a pastel ring in lavender, yellow and mint, so this combination is what fits. I've been wanting to do it for a long time, and the right setting made it's appearance recently.

That sounds lovely - can't wait to see that colour combo x

It's just not possible without modifying the setting. Your choices are as follows:
A. Pull the prongs in diagonally and set the stone with the prongs being nearly straight up. This is only really acceptably strong if you set the stone as close to the upper basket rail as possible, assuming that the upper rail is not bigger than the stone you are setting.
B. Cut out the center basket and replace it with one of the correct size.

The problem with option A is that the smaller stone may be too far away from the side stones for this to look right.
The problem with B is that it costs more money for both the new basket and the labor to do the work. I prefer B since it is easier to make everything look well spaced and it usually offers a more secure setting for the stone.

Thanks Michael,
Some food for thought then. I might just order it in silver first, I could probably use that setting somehow for some other stones.

I agree with Michael, cut the basket out and put the right one in, otherwise, it will look sloppy.

I am ordering it in silver first. The dealer says the 9x7 will fit in there. I think it might because my cushion is already in a 9x7 setting, and it sits rather high in there already.

I might just set it all in silver. My jeweler can do that.

Thanks Lee.

Hi TL,
Silver is a smart choice. I am sure it will fit and can look good, your guy will just need to pay attention to details in order to make it work well. Best regards, Lee
