I like the shape

I like the way it looks on my finger

I want something different

But all that said, nothing out performs a round.

Rounds are too common for me. They are everywhere.

For an e-ring, I just wanted something a little different and I am most definitely drawn to square and squarish shapes. It allowed me to have a ring that was more "modern" while still being a classic solitaire.

rounds go around and around and around and around and there is no variation and they''re boring.

I agree diagem - you''d have to have a 10 carat round to product a facet as big as the one on my cushion and that sucker throws rainbows across the room! When a round of equal size can throw a 12" rainbow 12'' - we''ll talk ;-)

Rounds are best at highlighting diamond''s dispersion.

But nothing beats an emerald or asscher for highlighting diamond''s transparency.

Non-round shapes are very pleasing to my eye and I think oblong shapes look better on my hand. However, I do wish they had the sparkle and light return of a round.

The only answer is to have both a nice round and a nice square.

A good asscher has a fascinating, freaky, and hypnotiizing hall-of-mirrors effect, and it gives off big bars of color.
A round of the same weight, no matter how well-cut, has much smaller sparkles of light.

I agree that emerald and asschers do have a classsic and elegant look to them.

LOL Strm....

Rounds are pretty, but they just don't do it for me...dunno why...There is something about a square stone that I just love...I have a mod cushion now and love it but really miss the clean lines of the princess...

Ditto!

Also....some fancy shapes provide more spread when size is an issue...

I just thought of something.

The asscher is the seventh diamond I have bought in my life.
The first six were round.

Maybe rounds are initially the most attractive, but then round owners start looking for something different.

I'd like to poll fancy owners to see if their first purchase was a round.

I think that rounds can be very beautiful, especially well cut ones, but unless you have perfectly proportioned fingers, I don''t believe rounds are as flattering as some of the fancy shapes. I also think that fancies are a lot more interesting.

I love the light return of a well cut round. Love it.

But I like something different, something that elongates my fingers, something that is surprising and uncommon.

Rounds are gorgeous and yes great for sparkle but I prefer Princess cuts. The name is pretty

, I agree with widget that spread can appear bigger if size is an issue b/c of the corners and I do think square cuts have a really neat sparkle all their own. Pears can also be very old world and aristocratic which is lovely. I personally like the look of a princess on my hand now I just have to get one LOL!

I like rounds... they're sparkly and pleasing to my eye and can be set a million different ways. But it just seems like everyone has one... friends, relatives, random lady at the grocery store, etc. For my e-ring, I wanted something just a bit more unique.... enter the oval.

I''ve never been round - I''ve always been oblong... LOL

I wanted a perfect round first, but after that I''d want a Antiquie Diamond-Gem cushion, an OMC, an asscher, and an emerald cut. Those are the only ones I want. Those are all classic and elegant and the most beautiful to me.

Well actually my DH chose my EC. He likes them b/c they are not as "messy" looking. I think he just likes the clean lines and the organization of a step cut. I personally love almost every shape of diamond and would have not been disappointed with a RB. But I do love the fire and the sparkle of my EC. I love that people are not always sure what kind of cut it is. I love how it looks in my setting.

I like all the shapes...... any diamond cut to maximize it''s beauty will always be desireable, at least for me.

But when you get really large rounds ( 10 carat + sizes ) they do tend to look like hubcaps.

The interesting thing is that in large round colored gemstones, you don''t get this effect in them.

I do like the ones you occasionally see cut in diamond shapes, and some kite shapes.
