Why do people post such small pics?

Often here people post pics of their rings and the pics are only 2 or 3 inches wide.

I believe today everyone has a monitor that is at least a foot wide.
Why not fill the screen and see more detail and clarity?
I usually adjust the size to the highest resolution (under 100Kb) and largest physical size I can.

I do agree that making it so large that you have to scroll to see it all is very rude, though I''m sure people who do this did not do it intentionally.

Do some people think posting a pic that fills more of the screen is rude, like using all caps or something?

Because people who aren''t experienced at re-sizing pics for the internet don''t always know what size to make them so their first attempts aren''t the perfect size.

Simple.

No, I don''t think it''s rude. I just don''t care enough.

I don''t care if someone wants to post small pictures either. Maybe they don''t have the time / knowledge/ inclination to fiddle about with the size or maybe they just want to show people a picture to give an idea of their ring.

Post pictures the way you like them, let everyone else do the same.

ETA: Wouldn't it be a boring world if we all did things the same exact way?!

I'm letting.

Asking why is not not letting.

I love pics and clearly seeing all the detail that's there is so beautiful.
Squinting to make out detail isn't fun.

Yup. I''ve had those moments myself. Now I know how to use Graphic Converter on my Mac to resize, but it''s still a pain in the butt.

Because there are size constraints placed on pictures by the PS system and everyone uses a different program to resize.

Why is this such a big deal?

No, I don''t suppose it is. It does imply disapproval, though. Ok. Remove the last six words from my first post.

Kenny, maybe instead of just complaining you could offer advice on how to quickly and easily resize so that it is Pricescope appropriate? Posts like this just embarrass newer people (or those who aren''t as tech savvy as you and others here who regularly post pictures) and aren''t terribly constructive.

I had trouble when I first started posting finding the right size so I had pictures that were too small or too big. I then read the thread on posting pictures to PS and learned the best advice- try to keep your largest dimension to around 700 pixels. This makes it a good size for posting (comes up to about 5in x 7in on most monitors) and almost always under the file size limit (at least with pictures from my camera).

For reference, the thread I am talking about is here.

Huh? I never even thought about complaining. To me, it doesn''t really matter.

Gosh people.
I'm not complaining, and it is not a big deal, and everyone can do whatever they want. Sheesh.

I started this thread as a gesture of courtesy, as I see many people post much smaller pics than I do, so I thought I may be violating some tradition or protocol.

I'd be happy to post how I do it but I have a mac and use IPhoto.
I suspect many people do not have this but I will do so for those who do.

But I'll bet I'll get a bunch of eggs thrown at me because people are going to think I'm criticizing people without macs.
People are so sensitive.

Not really getting the point of this thread. The answer is so obvious: not everyone knows (or cares to learn) how to resize pics to show up here in a large size. I''m one of them who doesn''t know and doesn''t really care to learn. Posting pictures here is extremely time-consuming and it annoys me, so I rarely do it. When I take the time to actually post pics, I''m definitely not going to take the extra time to figure out how to make them as big as possible. Too lazy.

Actually, I'd really appreciate that, Kenny.

This thread didn't seem like a courtesy, it seemed like a thinly veiled attack on people who don't know how to re-size their photos (and I'm one of those people), especially because you make it a point to talk about how much pride you take in your pictures and how careful you are about them. It comes off a little more judgmental than I think you meant it to be.

An iPhoto resizing tutorial would definitely make it clear that this is meant as a helpful thread.

If I am being honest, it took me nearly two weeks to work out how to post my pictures ( very technically challenged over here!

)

I never even considered how big they would be once posted. I am learning ( any jokes about teaching an old dog new tricks will not be appreciated

)
and will endeavor to make them bigger in future.

Any additional tips being added to the current thread about pics/posting would be very much appreciated!!!

I for one did not take offense at this post. I am a self confessed technophobe!

Sorry if I misinterpreted your tone. I found the thread to be a pretty passive aggressive way to point out that some people post really small photos.

And to answer your question about really large photos- No, I don''t find them rude. I, too, enjoy lots of details and appreciate the difficult task of getting a great photo of jewelry, especially diamonds. I don''t mind using ye ole scroll bar once in a while to view a photo on PS.

Kenny, are you answering your own question?

I personally don''t think it''s rude to post big pictures, whether it''s deliberate or not. You calling large pictures "very rude" when you''re well aware that people must not do so intentionally, however, I do find quite distasteful.

I''m sure if we could, we would all post vibrant, well-focused, beautiful pictures. But in real life, that''s not always the case. The original picture isn''t the best, there are size limitations, personal technical limitations, and sometimes, just plain old laziness. Whatever the reason, people are free to do what they see fit as long as they don''t invade other peoples'' rights. I agree with Claritek that it would be more constructive to post tips (not rules!) on resizing if it''s something you want to promote.

I just realized you went back and edited your post, that had already been quoted twice.

Somehow I doubt that people will think you''re being snobby or criticizing people without Apple computers by posting a HELPFUL thread about how to resize quickly and easily using iPhoto. If I saw a thread like that, I would just think that you were being very helpful and generous with your advice.

Double post.

Kenny, you take beautiful pictures, I love looking at them! I think you are like me and appreciate photography a lot. It''s great when people post nice, large, clear pictures but its fine if they don''t too. I''ve taken quite a few photography classes and have a portfolio, I really enjoy looking at any pictures people are willing to share on PS. I don''t think there are set rules either, but I get what you are saying :)

Gosh, Kenny, yes, why do you always start such contentious threads? Seriously, don't you know that how you post photos on PS can and does reflect poorly on you? I mean, honestly, you post this sort of question and then claim to be surprised when it turns into a Big Drama?

Stop invading my rights, Kenny...this sort of slander is Serious Business!

I don''t know about other browsers, but IE offers a zoom feature that allows you to make the site larger or smaller. I''m sure you can find this feature on other browsers and just zoom in and out until the picture is the size you would like to view.

It took me forever to learn how to post pics. It took me even longer to figure out how to take good ones.

So to answer your question "Why do people post such small pics?" I don''t know. Maybe their software is difficult for them to use. Maybe no matter how much they re-size, PS won''t accept their format. Many reasons.

I''m just grateful people choose to share pics at all, otherwise this site wouldn''t be fun to visit.

I must be so clueless.
I am astonished by how much almost everyone is offended by what I still am certain is a thread started out of courtesy.
People mistook my observation as a criticism.

I've asked admin to remove this thread.

I'll sincerely reflect on how to adjust my posting to how people are here.

I'll also start a thread on how to size pics with Mac/iPhoto.

Kenny, unfortunately life is often more about perception than intention.

Quote of the day princess. Quote. of. the. day.

Yes and perception originates in the reader, not the writer.

Clearly I must figure out, and adjust to, the readers here.

Part of the disconnect may be the Mars Venus thing. Who knows.

Ditto.

Heck been here 5 years and still don't know how to post pics. I have taken some good pics, and thankfully have had my PS friends post them for me.

I have seen small pics. When I do, I will say that looks soooo pretty but can you try a bigger pic when you get the chance. Because it's hard to see. No one ever takes offense to that...

I see Kenny's point... But, I see what other people see. It's all in the delivery....

Do it my way... Or some pot stirring.

Not the case here, and I think we all love pics. So the bigger the better?? Or just visible, some are so small you can't see the detail of the piece. And the detail is what I love and pay attention to...

Kenny I always love seeing your pics. You really are a great photographer!!!

JMHO.....

While you''re at it, would you mind posting more than one sentence per line? I tend to not read your posts because that makes it very hard to read and form cohesive thoughts from your posts, and I think you have some interesting things to say.

Honestly, I''m just happy when I''m able to post my pics without the error box popping up. I hate that troubleshooting message.

Guess size really does matter to some people.
