I do realize that everyone might get a little bit tired of the conversations about Fred Cuellar but I’m getting more and more lost in the diamond world here. Today I paid DCI a visit after already a couple of months looking for a nice ¾ to 1 carat diamond and he almost had me convinced. Nice office, relax atmosphere and a warm welcome. Impressed about all the pictures he showed me of his visit to the Whitehouse and the Hugh Hefner Playboy mansion and all the Championship rings they made.
Luckily for me, unfortunate for him, I am not an impulse buyer and although he had some knowledgeable arguments he came across as that fast car salesmen. Some story about the two dollar bill his granddad gave him jadajada. Then the story about the GIA certificated that there is actually a note on the backside that says that they do not guarantee the diamond is real (according to Fred applicable for almost all online diamond sale websites like Blue Nile). That their level/scale of clarity is a scam because they sell a SI1 as a VS1. And of course – what I red on several topics here - that nobody can beat his price because he is a cutting house and those others are middleman’s. He didn’t mention the ‘warped’ diamond but maybe because I didn’t mentioned anything about other diamonds I’ve seen. He gave me his book ‘how to buy a diamond’ as well. Once again, he was very polite and not obtrusive and I felt very comfortable checking out some diamonds. But apparently that is his well performed act if I may believe what has been written about him on this website.
Anyway, after visiting a bunch of diamond sellers already I thought I was getting somewhere when I was visiting DCI, but now reading all this I got the idea that the whole diamond world is one big scam. I’ve asked several dealers about competitors and most of them accusing each other that they are selling crappy diamonds with a lot of ‘technical’ arguments.
So the million dollar question here is: who can you trust? What is a good place to go for a nice diamond without beings misled? Preferably in the Houston area…
