Hi,
I recently got engaged (3weeks ago) and I am concerned about scuffing that I believe I can already see on the bottom of my ring (my fiance tells me Im crazy, but there are faint ones there already

). I am considering getting the setting re-made into platinum. I have yet to get quotes (i''m in australia) but I am certain it wont be cheap.
Will it be worth it? Is there less of a chance of the platinum scuffing or approximately the same?
Or are their other things I could do to keep the white gold and make it stronger?
Any clarification will be of great help!
Thanks

Depending on the alloy used. Usually the alloys used for Pt is easier to scratch than the common WG alloy used.

From personal experience, I''d suggest before you go to the expense of changing from WG to Plat, take the ring to be re-rhodium plated ($25-35 AUD). A lot of commercial WG settings don''t seem to have a great level of rhodium plating when first bought. When I got mine, I noticed yellowing on the base within a week. I took the ring to a different jeweler than I bought it from because I''d already had an ordeal with the original jeweler. The new rhodium plating has lasted 10 months and its only just now that I''m started to notice wearing again. Some people get their rings re-plated with rhodium every 6 months, other people may go years (or never!).

Thank you so much for writing "plated" instead of "dipped." :-) Ice cream may be dipped in chocolate, but metals are plated with rhodium, lol.

Hi Gls,

For the most part, no matter which metal you choose, it is going to "scuff" with daily wear. It''s sort of like trying to keep a new car that you drive every day, scratch free. It''s nearly impossible. Platinum, being a purer metal, is going to show bumps and dings more easily because the metal will be pushed inward as it gets knocked around (enter, “Patina’). "Scratches" in platinum are different than scratches in gold because gold scratches tend to lose more metal whereas with platinum, the metal mostly stays, but simply shifts around. Either metal is going to show wear if you use them every day, but platinum doesn''t require a rhodium plating, so it will stay white in color.

You could take it back now to be rhodium plated, yes, but it seems that 3 weeks is such a short period of time to have to spend 30 dollars already on your brand new ring. At this rate you''re going to find yourself spending an awful lot to keep your rings looking new and scratch free.

I suggest talking to some friends who may own either metal and take a look at their rings so that you can compare the worn difference between the two and see which look suits your tastes better.

Good luck!
