The engagement ring I am purchasing for my g.f. is a 3-stone set-up (center round and pear sides) in yellow gold.
( https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/need-help-side-stones-for-engagement-ring.68570/ ). The e-ring setup comes standard with White gold prongs rather than platinum. Is it worth paying extra $ to updgrade to platinum prongs (a few hundred bucks)? I was hoping someone could summarize the difference between the two. Is white gold more prone to tarnishing than platinum - to be honest I am more concerned about how the prong type will affect the look of the diamond rather than value.

Thanks.

A few hundred $ is quite pricey just for platinum prongs. My E-ring is WG and the prongs are WG too. Nothing has happened to it so far and I''ve been wearing it for many years. I do get the prongs checked twice a year though, just in case.

Plus, I don''t wear it in the house (no housework or gardening with it on).

My ring also has white gold prongs and I think they look fine. They aren''t dull and I''ve never had any problems with them - and I wear my rings most of the time (not in the shower or to bed). I get mine checked a few times a year to be safe but no issues. I''m not sure if the platinum prongs would affect the value of the ring or not - I''ll save that one for the experts

In fact, the white gold prongs should stay shinier than platinum. I also had a yellow gold solitaite with white gold prongs for 30 years, and the only thing I ever needed to do was have the prongs retipped after about 25 years (cost maybe $20). Just keep an eye on them for wear at the top.
