Here are the details:

You must decide between a certified 1/2 carat stone which would be F color and SI1 clarity (EGL certified) or a 1 carat stone that is claimed by the jeweler to be G color and SI1 clarity (I inspected it and it is very white and virtually eye clean). I did a bit of research and the jeweler selling the 1 carat has has been in business for 16 years. Also, he showed me the papers that indicated how much he bought the diamond for to calm any doubts I may have.

If you had to make a decision between choosing the certified 1/2 carat stone for an e-ring or getting the non-certified 1 carat stone for the same price, which would you choose?

get an idealscope
check th uncerted stones cut
get a writen return guarantee
take uncerted stone to an independant appraiser within the return period.
But first use the pricescope search engine above to check pricing.

Usualy if a diamond doesnt have a cert there is a reason.
A common one is that its a pre-owned diamond and the previous owner lost the cert but its possible the jewler has a reason for not getting it certed. Like it wont check out.

If there is an independant appraiser in your area id consider it if the price is right.

First, "virtually eye clean" does not qualify as an SI1, hence maybe you should consider this an SI2.

Second, there are a number of reasons why a stone may not be certified, two of the obvious being time and no faith. It''s possible that the jeweler overpaid for the stone, or he bought it as an SI1 and after further inspection realized it was an SI2 or it could have been certified and he didn''t like the grade and chose to trash the papers. There are many unscrupulous dealers out there. Use your best judgment and make an educated purchase.

Sorry...I didn''t finish...I would recommend the 1/2 ct, but it is possible that the jeweler was pushing the one carat more...try to get a better discount on the 1/2ct or move up to a 3/4 if possible.

By the way, what city are you in? Maybe I can recommend a good jeweler.

1 carat if I could get it appraised before making my commitment.
