Which To Choose From (Help)

Hopefully I am posting in the right section.

I am looking to buy an engagement ring. I have already proposed to my fiancé and we are now looking at various different rings.

I understand the 4 C's and we have our budget set, but we are struggling to find the ratio and balance between Colour, Clarity & Cut VS Carat (i.e - size).

We found 2 really nice rings at one particular jewellers, and they looked great in terms of Colour, Clarity & Cut to our naked amateur eyes, however I was surprised at the 3 Colour, Clarity & Cut grades... BUT maybe these are normal grades?

Does anyone have any advice on getting the ratio and balance right of 'Colour, Clarity & Cut' VS Carat, or is it purely personal choice?

Here are the 2 rings in which we are looking at, which we both thought it looked great, but maybe the grades are too low?


Ring 1 (Round)
- Colour: G
- Cut: Brilliant
- Carat: 3.34
- Clarity: Si1
- Deal Price: €52,000


Ring 2 (Emerald)
- Colour: H
- Cut:
- Carat: 3.37
- Clarity: Si1

I have to ask:
Does she prefer rounds or EC’s?
These two cuts are night and day.
Evaluating them is just as polar opposite.
Does she have a preference?

At SI1 inclusions are usually much more visible in an emerald cut than a round. You need to know exactly what type of inclusions there are, and where - or could it be hidden under a prong or is it a black carbon spot in the middle of the table. With an EC I think clarity is much more important than with a round brilliant.

Also your “cut” evaluation shouldn’t just be a description of the shape. It should be a grading of how well the stone is cut - is excellent, very good, good, fair.

In my opinion cut is the most important of the four.

I’m tolerant of a warmer colour but I like my diamonds big, sparkly and eye clean. So my priority is cut, clarity then colour.

quite challenging to compare a round brilliant with an emerald cut. such differing "flavours" and "personalities."

just based on the specifications, you've provided, i would be concerned with the clarity for the emerald cut. the stone needs to be, personally, evaluated to be eye clean
