I've been lurking on this forum for years but just now decided to post as I have a very special project coming up! I turn 21 in April and would like to have a ring made. My budget is between $800-$1000 and I have chosen to buy the sailor's knot ring in 18kt yellow gold from Gemvara (http://www.gemvara.com/Customized/jewelry/v/1849213/). However, I really would prefer to pick out the sapphire myself, not to mention their sapphires are over priced, so I have decided to order that ring with the cheapest stone, pick out my own sapphire, and have it reset. Now I need your help in picking the sapphire! I have already contacted Gemfix with a description of what I want but I have also been looking at some stones on Gemselect. Could you all please give me your opinions on these two stones or maybe suggest some others? I need a 5mm stone and I love cornflower blue. Here are the two stones I'm looking at:
http://www.gemselect.com/sapphire/sapphire-308702.php#clarity
http://www.gemselect.com/sapphire/sapphire-252981.php#

Also, I have considered rose gold for the setting, however, having not seen the color in person I am skeptical about whether it would clash. Opinions?

I think rose gold and a blue sapphire would look good. So would yellow gold. It's a matter of preference (I prefer the yellow, but actually 14K, not 18K (18K is more greenish yellow, in my opinion, whereas 14K is a warmer color)). You should go to a jewelry store and look at items in different colors of gold, I think.

I'm not an expert on finding sapphires so I won't say much, but I think the stone in the second GemSelect link will have a window that won't be pretty.

Good luck making your perfect ring!

Thanks so much for the comment. I don't know much about windowing so I'll have to research that. As for the rose gold coloring I have a bit of14kt rose gold and it is quite similar to the yellow gold. But I know color can differ between vendors. I think the rose gold would be striking. The down side is that Gemvara does not offer rose gold in 18kt in this design.

Rose gold would be smashing with a sapphire, but I LOVE that ring. I'd rather have that setting in yg than anything else in rg -- either color gold sets off a sapphire equally well.

Have a look here, there might be something you like:

And welcome to PS! You've come to the right place. :wavey:

P.S. This gives you a good mini-course on windowing & extinction. You could also search these forums for more. http://www.ruby-sapphire.com/brilliance_windows_extinction.htm

A different opinion here I'm afraid. For me (this is a personal thing) rose gold clashes horribly with blue. I only use rose gold with pink gemstones - but that's just me!!! I most definitely would make sure you see some rose gold with blue before you go down that route. You've said the word "clash" and that's exactly what I feel it does. If you're in the US, don't you have a coin made of a sort of rose gold colour? If yes, why don't you put that near something blue.

In terms of your links, both gems are fairly dark (not cornflower blue) and once set will darken further. They also have quite a lot of black and grey tones. If I were you I'd forget looking for the right size and try to find the colour you like (look for something a tiny bit lighter than you want to allow for darkening in a setting). Once you have the seen the colour you want, I'd then go on a more thorough search!

Hope that helps.

I agree with LD about the stones, however I love blue and rose together *ducks* But, both must be the right color to work well.

Have you considered a montana sapphire? If you buy from a precision cutter, you get a very lovely performing stone indeed for quite reasonable money. Mastercutgems.com has I think one but its a bit blueish green. Precisiongems.com has some but I don't know which ones were sold (worth checking). gemfix.com has a lovely violet blue montana which while a bit more expensive could work within your overall budget quite well.

Litnon.com has a violetish blue that isn't a montana but is unheated and could work within your budget too.

Sometimes you can find what I call denim blue but those can go very quick.

I have owned both a YG/sapphire ring, and a WG sapphire ring - and much preferred the WG as it made the dark blue stone stand out much more. Both had diamonds as well. I only have 1 RG piece of jewelry and I'm really liking that on my skin, but not so sure I'd want it with a sapphire.

Try on a variety of options at your local B&M store to see what appeals to you and what works best with your skin tone.

I love medium to light blue sapphires in rose gold. I love them in high karat yellow gold too. I don't think you can go wrong with either of those metal colors. I think white gold or white metal would be for someone with a more traditional stance on what a sapphire should be set in, but I do think yellow and rose gold really make the blue pop. JMO, because some people dislike rose and/or yellow gold, and you know who you are! :Up_to_something:

For rose gold, my favorite is pink or peach stones, but I think that pastel and light colored stones can look striking. For example, I love this aquamarine in rose gold from The Three Graces:

Thanks for the links jewelfreak they were very helpful! I looked at the link with the sapphires but they seem dark. I’m so worried I’ll end up purchasing something that looks great in pictures but that is to dark in person.

LD I did put the rose gold I had near one of my sisters sapphires and I didn’t notice much difference from putting it near yellow gold. I am hoping that the ring I buy is close enough to yellow gold but just a little bit pink so that it does not clash. I suppose I can always order the rg and if I don’t like it I can exchange it for yellow. But thanks for the advice! I’ll continue my search looking for slightly lighter than I want.

Arcadian, I looked at the precision cut gemstones and LOVE the way they look. I think a precision cut Montana sapphire may be exactly what I am looking for! I loved the one you mentioned: http://mastercutgems.com/index.php?page=viewgem&id=5898 I am just worried that the setting is made for a 5mm stone and I don't know if a jeweler can make a 5.5 mm stone fit. Any ideas?

Enerchi thanks for the advice, I have a ton of yellow and white gold which is why I wanted to try the rg but I will go check it out in the B&M near me if I can find a good one!

TL, I think I’m definitely wanting for the stone to pop and as you say the rose gold will probably do that. I love all colors of gold! Thanks for the comment!

Pregcurious, I wasen’t looking for something quite so pale although I agree with u that combo looks amazing. I think probably a medium blue is what I’ll try in the rg setting. Thanks!

For the shade of blue that you linked, yellow gold will be a good option. Bezeling it will darken it just a smidge and the soft yellow will lessen the contrast, so the sapphire will not look as stark and cold.

I see what you mean about yg brightening the stone but for some reason I'm still in love with the rg! I'll try to post a pic of the stone Photoshopped into the rose gold setting. I have ordered the ring already but I can change the setting color if need be.

Here is the sapphire from Master gem in rg and yg. He provided two pics, a lighter and darker, so the images above are of the same sapphire in different lighting. Opinions are very much appreciated!

I think it will be very pretty in rose gold, and very unique!

Edit: regarding the 5.0mm to 5.5 mm difference -- here's a chart with visual representations of diamond sizes. They don't have a 5.0mm or 5.5mm image, but do have a 4.8mm, 5.2mm, and 5.6mm. Depending on your monitor settings, don't know if the 5.2mm image will actually appear as 5.2mm, but the point would be that the variance seems small enough that it could be possible to widen the prongs sufficiently. More knowledgeable people than me could chime in whether the fact that the seat has been already cut (for the stone that you'll be removing) could be an issue in widening.

The stone is like a slightly greenish blue, and I think the rose gold brings out the blue more than the yellow gold.

Based on the photos, I agree with TL that the rose gold brings out more of the blue, but the yellow gold definitely makes the stone look brighter, due to the contrast, as Chrono suggested. It's all about trade-offs, but either way you'll end up with a very pretty ring.

I have no idea who you could be referring to but it's obviously somebody with fabulous taste, probably lives in the UK and doesn't like clashing gemstones. What a wonderful person they must be. :naughty: :Up_to_something:

Thanks for posting the RG/YG options with the lighter and darker stones! Seeing the comparisons, I'm leaning towards the RG look - no matter which intensity of sapphire you acquire. That really is a unique look and very soft and feminine looking. I really like your setting selection - if this is the one!

I order the ring in rg and then changed my mind. I loved the rg but gemvara didn't carry it in 18kt gold and I had my heart set on 18kt, so in the end I changed my order to 18kt yellow gold! Now I need to decide on the stone and I have narrowed it down to two options. Could you all lend me your opinions on which is the better stone? Thanks!

option 1: http://mastercutgems.com/index.php?page=viewgem&id=6411

option 2: http://mastercutgems.com/index.php?page=viewgem&id=6240

JMO and kneejerk reaction from looking at both pictures without studying too hard is the second one is perhaps a little more striking. Couldn't tell you a thing about how to grade quality of it by looking at an online pic though.

I like the 2nd one better, but I would ask what they look like in person.
