Hmmm . . . an E to an I is a huge jump. Why did the WF rep suggest such a huge color jump? Were you looking for suggestions/alternatives?

I *think* people will say that because it is an ES stone, it will "face up" whiter, but I don''t think that is always the case.

If you are color sensitive, I would go with the E. Also, I would expect the I stone to be priced lower, even though it is an ES stone, but I think there is a major price difference between stones below one carat and one carat above. So, you''d be paying more for a stone that is only slightly larger and not the color you want.

I don''t know much about the cut of the stone to comment on that. I was just curious as to the reason for their suggestion.

the wf rep told me this:I would like to suggest this BEAUTIFUL A CUT ABOVE Princess cut that is in the same price range and will be a beautiful choice - I understand that it is a lower color but because of the cut it faces up WHITE.
The cuts on this diamond are way better but the colour is alot lower and its a si2. Is it possible for a diamond to look better just because of the cut?

Absolutely! Cut is what makes a diamond beautiful rather than the colour or clarity. For example, a D colour flawless clarity diamond would look like a glass pebble if the cut was bad. Conversely, a low colour imperfect clarity ( if not very visibly included) will shine and sparkle and look incredible with a great cut! It is harder to determine cut quality with fancy shapes such as Princess, however the experts at Whiteflash will be in the best position to advise you on a diamond's suitability, also on how well a colour grade such as an I presents itself.

I looked online and found a diamond of wf that i liked.
http://www.whiteflash.com/princess/Princess-cut-diamond-578029.htm

the specs are what i am looking for as far as colour etc.

the wf representative suggested this one because its a cut above princess..if this is a better diamond why is the colour so low?

help please!

ACA's sparkle more and in a Princess you will see that for sure, here is a link to a beautiful ACA I stone

I think it is possible for a stone to look better because of its cut; however, cut can only do so much to balance out color, otherwise, why would they even grade color. Here's a post I started a while back about the "facing up white" theory:

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/color-question-for-oec-experts.74720/

It pertains to what I was told about old european cuts, but is relevant to this issue nevertheless.

I do hesitate to say this (for fear of getting slammed and because I do love this board so much, but I only say this for purposes of healthy skepticism), but I will say it anyway, the grading report is dated 9/11/06 -- is there any connection between that date and the date WF acquired the stone, i.e. has it been hanging around for a while and perhaps there are additional incentives for selling stones that have not moved?

I'm not saying that it's a bad stone, but I am saying I think it is very odd for someone to suggest an I-colored stone (regardless of its cut) when you are looking for an E. An "F"? Sure. A "G"? Yes, that still seems quite reasonable. But, an "I"??

To anyone else who cares to comment -- what is wrong with the cut of the E stone? I realize it is not an ACA, but is it really so far off to say that the stone will not be beautiful because of the cut?

thanks for all the help as each of you have really cleared things up

Ok, what I see with this stone, that would keep me looking. It only has Good symmetry, we tend to recommend at least VG. When you only have good, it tends to inicate the cutter was not going for the best cut. Often times they go for weight retention which brings more money, instead of just trying to cut a beautiful stone.

Next is the table measurement. With princess cuts (or any for that matter), ideally you want to see this number smaller than the depth, or at the very least, the same size. When the table gets bigger than the depth, you start getting a glassy looking stone, not what you want to see. Also, when the tabe is at ideal size, you'll get more fire, which you do want.

Lastly, the diameter measurements show us the stone is not square (5.61x5.47). You want these numbers as close as possible, if not the same.

I think you can definitely do better.

As to the ACA I. A great cut WILL mask things a bit. Some people are more tolerant of color than others. The only way you'll know if that low of color is fine for you, is to see some very well cut Princess in that color range. If that's not possible, you could have this one sent to an independant appraiser and have a look.
