Which mattress is least toxic?

Hello fellow PS'ers,

Can you please help me to choose which mattress is the least toxic? Something that I am least likely gonna react to. I have slight asthma, and have been dizzy since the Covid jabs, plus other symptoms.

I am in the process of replacing my only 2.5 year old mattress (too soft, not enough support and is doing my neck and back in!!).

I'm not keen on "standard" mattresses like Sealy or King Koil as they give out terrible VOC's, like I can actually smell the toxic gases and chemicals. PLUS, they have lots of metal coils, which may worsen my EMF issues. I don't know for sure if EMF is really an issue but I live very close to giant cell towers and opposite a train station. So I'd better not take any chances.

I looked up latex mattresses but apparently they're treated with chemicals including zinc oxide, sulfur and God knows what else!:(

Can someone recommend a "safe" mattress please?

Go to a site that specialisez in mattresses and look for the ones that are not treated and are organic.
I bought one from one of those sites, looking for hypoallergenic and got one that was stinking of chemicals, it was treated. I aired it for a week and the smell went away 90%. It was so strong I could smell it from 3 rooms away. The smell that was left was bearable but not nice...I'm hoping it will eventually go away 99%.
After buying and opening it realised they had untreated ones on the same site, ugh!
This site was in the UK so I suggest you try find one where you are, I'm sure there must be alternatives.
I did not try to memorize brand names but could look it up again.

To be honest, I also tested if the smell was affecting me in any way and luckily it didn't, otherwise I would have sent it back somehow. And just went and checked it and can't really smell it anymore, so it's 99% gone already.
Would I intentionally opt for a treated one? No.

Moral of the story, look for organic and not hypoallergenic.

I've done a lot of internet searching and cannot find anything that is completely untreated, even the so called "organic" and "healthy" choices.

Yes, those smells are off-the-chart AWFUL!! If we can smell them, imagine the havoc they'd wreak on our body?

If you could pls try and look up the names for me, it'd be much appreciated.

That is why I took precautions and aired it for at least a week, I think it was 10 days actually meanwhile we slept om the couch 'cause we gave our mattress up to be recycled when this was delivered.

Ok, I'll get back to you later.

You might want to check out the Purple mattress. They are non-toxic and there is no off-gas. We bought ours when I was pregnant and my sense of smell was like a bloodhound.

When I last researched latex mattresses there were lots of different types and levels of off gassing so I wouldn’t rule it out. Try googling “organic latex mattress” and “wool mattress”.

I did google "organic latex mattress". It took me to several latex sites, but they all say that the latex is treated with zinc oxide and sulfur.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like wool mattresses are available in Singapore where I am.

I will keep looking though. Thank you.

Found it, so this is the UK site where I've bought mine from.

I've put the words "chemical free" in the search and these popped:

If you click on one, under you can find stats.
No idea if they deliver internationally.

says in the stats:
  • No unnecessary chemical treatments - naturally flame retardant

Hi, I wanted to mention that I’ve been chemically sensitive for a long time. I was also sensitive to the COVID jab and had long term side effects. My sense of smell is acute.

First thing I want to say is do not buy anything that’s treated with flame retardant. I can smell that.

We recently tried a NO flame retardant natural latex mattress and I could smell it all over the house. We also tried another type of latex (Dunlop versus Talalay), in a couch, and I could smell that. It was AWFUL (Dunlop. Talalay smelled slightly more acceptable but still permeated the whole house). No flame retardants, this was the smell of latex.

We then purchased a Naturpedic mattress with metal coils and organic cotton batting. It might have also had wool. No obvious smell but very firm. It was their only mattress without latex. I do understand about the issue of metal coils but we were getting desperate. No smell. We also got an organic cotton and wool futon for my child from Soaring Hearts. No smell. The best. So fresh. But hard and shifty. There is a company from Bulgaria that I’ve seen ads for, which ships Worldwide (not sure about your country’s limitations though). It’s called Home of Wool. They make wool-only mattresses and toppers. I’ve considered buying from them because wool is less rock hard than cotton. It’s more lofty. You might try a wool cotton mattress or futon with a wool topper for comfort. I’m sorry this has been a struggle for you, I understand what you are going through being extremely sensitive to smells. Good luck.

We ordered from my green mattress - the all latex version as I wanted no coils. I love it. It’s medium firm-firm. No off gassing. Organic material. Comfortable. The other one I was contemplating between was the avocado brand all latex version. Will now be replacing all the house mattresses with the my green mattress ones.

We tried Avocado Brand with Talaylay latex. It smelled for three months until we returned it. FYI YMMMV

I am sooo glad I started this thread. I've been on a search for many months, with nothing suitable available where I live.

I will peruse through all the options available, and see which one would suit my needs the most. Most of these are however not available where I live.:(

Thank you everyone.

This is what I am afraid of. And there's no return option here.

I think I am gonna go with House of Wool. Great thing is that they allow you to order a sample, for about $100. It should arrive within a few days.

I just hope I am not allergic to wool. I mean I am itchy when I wear a wool sweater. But given the mattress will have a cover, plus a mattress cover, plus all the beddings, it should be alright. Fingers crossed.

Do you happen to know if their mattresses are on the firm side? I don't like soft, or "plush" mattresses as they do my back and neck in. I try to avoid medium firm also.

Thank you so much.

The least-toxic mattress, is the one you don't eat.

That's how this guy ruined his figure.

Not this time Kenny, this is serious.
Inhaling is pretty much the same as eating something, that is why asthma inhalers exist, to deliver a dose of a drug and anything you smell you are actually taking in.
Being affected by the smells is very serious, it means illness.

You know which part is funny, your joke is actually true believe it or not.

Chems we inhale, ingest etc, they change us from within. Mess with our immune system, with our brains and hormones just like drugs do. This is how it works, a chemical (or part of a chemical, the part that can attach to a receptor) can mimic some natural chemical produced by body, thus fit into a receptor and when it does it starts changing you.
This is how medication works, if something blocks receptors and they are called antagonist, anti something or something blockers and the apposite are called agonists.

These can cause immune changes, cancer, they can mess with the glands in your brain, in your body, make you fat etc

I think we should be able to make fun of anything, really and you have the right to do it, I feel shI66y for commenting about it but please listen to this, it will be worth your time /health.

Hi Phoenix- I suspect that wool mattresses are soft and squishy, not firm. Please ask the company though maybe they have advice. I wonder if you have access to Naturpedic. The coil and cotton mattress we just got from Naturpedic doesn’t smell and is firm. I suspect all wool will be unstructured and more soft. Just a guess.

Hi there, @Phoenix! :wavey: It's nice to see you!

We get all our mattresses from Custom Comfort mattresses. They're hand made by the company on site and the one I buy is 100% cotton. It's INCREDIBLY comfortable and I love it! Their mattresses are also double sided, like mattresses used to be.

I love these mattresses - expensive but worth every penny.

I am so glad you've told me this! I shall check with them. So sad. I had high hopes!!

OMG. I wish I could get Naturpedic. I don't think we have it here. My googling search doesn't show it. Cotton would be best and firm is GREAT! I can't do soft/squishy mattresses.

Everything smells like something. We have a new Naturepedic that we love (latex over coils). It smells like a new mattress and maybe a little like latex. As I am sure you know, and as no one wants to hear, self-described sensitivity issues are usually annoyance coupled with anxiety. Read about the Ecology House debacle (I think) in Marin County.

It is almost impossible to find a good mattress (firm, not hard) -- there were basically none for the "pillowtop"/memory-foam decades but finally there are some decent choices out there again. But superimposing that Venn diagram of no smell, no coils, no anything and you should probably just get the rock-hard all-cotton futon that we slept on for ten years...

Oh, really? What does glass smell like?

No it's not!

It's environmental illness.

Just to add - I have an organic wool and cotton futon mattress that I tried before getting a latex one. You can smell the wool. I think it took about 2 weeks for it to not smell anymore. Also, because it’s a futon mattress - the edges of the mattress were not totally flat but had a bit of a raise/bump that went all over. This I found uncomfortable when used as a bed (but not noticeable when on the futon).
