Hi all,
I'm in the process of doing up our hall stairs and landing. First job was painting. Went from a bright red to a pale grey. I absolutely love it. All woodwork is white and this alone has made a huge difference in brightening the place up. We have decided to keep the existing porcelain tiles (Ivory) and just get them cleaned up and re-grouted. This has left us with an extra budget for carpeting the stairs and landing woo hoo!! I have fallen in love with this carpet; Timorous Beasties Yellow Ruskin Butterfly. I just wanted opinions on whether you think it would suit the existing decor, pale grey and white?? They also have it in Silver, but the butterfly is missing the pop of colour the yellow has. Would love some opinions please;
Here it is in yellow;

Here it is in Silver;

Here it is on a similar sized stairs and landing to ours;

Thanks :D

I think the yellow would go beautifully with the gray. I am not a big fan however of carpeting stairs but if I were to carpet them I think the pattern/color you have chosen will look great with your other colors.

I like the yellow too. If you want the carpet to blend into the background I would go with the gray but I prefer the yellow.

I really love this pattern, and agree the yellow will go with your color scheme, but I personally much prefer it in silver, finding it's elegant quietness more livable day-to-day and year-to-year. The yellow with red would be brighter but I think over time it would show traffic/dirt more and over the years may not rest as easy on the eyes... of course this is just my opinion.

Either way, you've picked a wonderful pattern - it really depends on the look and atmosphere you wish to create.

Personally, I would choose the silver, but as marymm posted above, it really depends on the atmosphere that you're trying to create. The yellow adds a bit more color (and whimsy), while the silver adds a touch of classic elegance. Both are very pretty =)

Thank you missy, tyty,marymm and momhappy for your opinions. I am finding the decision quite hard. I love love the yellow, because I love colour and it reminds me of my nana's carpet when I was small lol. Marymm, you've hit the nail on the head in terms of what's making this decision so hard for me. Although I love the yellow, I am wondering in terms of longevity would the silver be better. Will I get sick of the yellow over time??? This carpet isn't cheap so an expensive mistake if I do tire of it. DH is no good, he says go with whatever!! Driving me mad :wall:

^I love yellow too - it's actually one of my favorite colors. I would share the same concerns in regards to longevity - I just don't think that the yellow would be classic enough to stand the test of time. Do you plan to sell the house any time in the near future? That's something to keep in mind (the yellow would be a harder sell).

Momhappy, that is something I was also considering. No we don't plan on reselling ATM, but who knows down the line. Also because of the price, it is something that I couldn't justify changing in a few years if I was to tire of it.

Can you get ahold of 2 large samples to take home? It might help to see both examples in your house and live with them for a little while. This is what I'm doing right now. I loved 2 types -- one is very dark similar to mahogany and the other is lighter. I really really loved the dark. Brought two large pieces home and moved them around various rooms at different times of the day to see how they looked in natural light and decided that the lighter is the best choice -- even though I still like the look of the dark floor better on its own.

Matata,
Yes I think that definitely is the best thing to do! I'm going to ring today to get them to send me out some samples. My problem is that I'm too impatient, I want everything done now ha ha!!

The samples are a great idea! Let us know how they work out:)

silver.
elegant and simple.
more "timeless".
should you change the wall paint color on the wall offers more choices.

If you love the yellow, you should go with that. It has been my experience that when I follow my heart with decorating, I am most pleased. After decorating from the heart, I walk into the room and smile each and every time. The room feels like home to me. It has soul. Other people feel it too! I always get compliments on the rooms that I have decorated from the heart.

When I decorate for status quo or for serious practicality, my heart flops when I walk into the room. I long for something else. I feel like someone else should live in that room. I usually end up redecorating quickly.

By the way, I LOVE the yellow.

Thanks movie zombie and house cat for your input :wavey:
Well I decided to call into the carpet place today to see the carpets in person, and wow they are both beautiful. I am naturally drawn to the yellow, but I think it is because I am drawn to colour in general! I took samples of each home and I am now leaning more towards the silver, with a view to getting my pop of colour through accessories, lamp shades, pictures. Light-fittings etc. Movie Zombie, DH is in line with your thinking, that the silver is def more versatile in terms of decor changes down the road. House Cat, I generally do get what I love and adore decorating and my style is def quite quirky. I know if someone walked into our house with the yellow stairs they would say it was so me!! The only thing holding me back is the expense, once this carpet is down, she won't be coming up in the near future (or DH would have me convicted ha ha). However I still adore the silver, much more in person actually and the butterflies are a lovely subtle pale yellow and I could still inject my style through accessories.
I will live with the samples for a while before completely making up my mind ! I'm driving DH nutty walking around with the samples and quizzing him like mad and changing my own mind every 2 seconds!!!

glad the silver is pleasing in person!

What about the silver rug on the stairs and the yellow as an area rug for the landing? On my screen, it looks like the silver rug has a little yellow in it? I think it would be awesome in a round rug.

Movie Zombie, yes the silver is beautiful, but definitely not as striking as the yellow which is making it hard :think:
Effe, yes the butterfly in the silver is a subtle pastel yellow. DH suggested something like that too and the yellow would make a beautiful rug. Just as I'm coming around to the Silver, DH now says he prefers the yellow ha ha!
We have a bit of time to decide yet. A fitter is coming to measure on Tuesday and then we'll decide on colour !
