I have been engagement ring shopping for months and I''m going a little crazy. I''ve decided to definitely buy the stone online, but I''m a little more hesitant to have it set by an online jeweler for a few reasons: 1) I want to see the setting in person so I know how it will look and 2) If I had it set online, it seems like it would be very annoying to have it resized (if necessary), cleaned, etc. by an online place...wouldn''t I have to send it in to them?

So my questions are: 1) People who have bought a stone and had it set online...how do you deal with the concerns I''ve expressed? and 2) Does anyone know of a great place to set a stone in San Francisco?

I have spent so much time on this it''s getting a little ridiculous. I would love some help and advice. Thanks so much.

Hi ss,

Well, ideally, if you decided on a vendor who carries a lot of settings (GOG does), you could then try and find someone local who also carries the line. Then one, you could go in and see the quality, and two, then have them do work on it if need be, or take it in and they''d send it off to the designer. Not sure exactly how that works.

I bought my stone and setting from GOG, and got a Vatche. They have a warranty, but I wasn''t interested in keeping it (mainly because of the forementioned hassle of sending off), so I have had my local jeweler resize mine, etc, It voided everything, but mine''s a simple setting, and I didn''t see any potential issues. If it''s a more elaborate setting, this may be of concern.

I don''t know how far you are from here, but I''ve heard good things about this jeweler.

I agree w/what Ellen says. I bought my stone online and my ring online and after receiving the stone I sent the stone the person who sold me the setting.
