Where do all the original non-upgraded diamonds go? Do they tell you if you''re buying someone else

It just dawned on me - DUH - that the rings we send back for upgrades probably get resold. So, am I wearing someone else''s original e-ring thinking it is brand spanking fresh out-of-the-ground?

Do they tell you if it was pre-owned? Are there gemological standards for this process?

Where do all the upgrades go..............?

Sure the diamonds get resold. If you''re buying a diamond with an older cert, there''s a good possibility it''s an upgraded stone (or a dog that just won''t move out of inventory, lol). My understanding, though, is that a stone may be sent out to be re-graded if it''s older, perhaps polished (I''m not sure about this), and re-sold. Yes, it''s very possible that your diamond is "used." The complete ring is not likely to be "used" unless it''s advertised as such, but the diamonds themselves are commodities. I can''t imagine why a vendor would agree to take in my old diamond in trade unless the vendor expected to re-sell the diamond to someone else.

In my store we sell trade up diamonds that do not meet our standards as traded in diamonds, openly declared and bargain prices. They are all loose out the back. Sometimes if there is a mount like earrings etc, we will leave them there, but unset.

We do not sell seccond hand jewellery per se.

But if someone trades a diamond that meets all our standards and criteria (cut, H+, eye clean etc) then that may go directly into our main inventory. As does a diamond that we have sold before, but only after a thorough restocking check.

But, do you disclose this information and how?

Do you have a new cert. done or keep a provenance history for future buyers.

I asked how new my stone was and was told fairly "new" since the registration #''s were in accordance w/ newer merch. but this doesn''t really mean much!

Egads, my diamond could have had 12 previous owners before - what kind of juju does that create?

When a diamond is mined 300 years ago and sold, resold, inherited, sold to a new family over and over, recut once or twice etc etc. what do you call it?

Answer - a diamond forever.

If that were not possible you would not have the benefit of a trade up policy. They would no longer be fungible

Lisa, I wouldn''t worry about it. I once looked at a diamond with a 30 year old cert and it had never been set because it was bought as an investment. The best thing to do is not to worry. None of these vendors would sell a damaged stone, so you''re getting new quality no matter what. They would recertifiy a stone that was not in the condition on the original cert. and some vendors probably recertify anyway. Stones don''t carry any "juju" unless you create that in your mind!

Diamondseeker you always know what to say - thank for the de-jujuing!

I guess what can I expect from something that is over a billion, trillion, million years old?

I guess the philosohical answer is that it never really belongs to you anyway "If you love something set it free....."

Although I''m going to enjoy the heck out of the stone while I''m borrowing it

Lol! You''ve got that right!!!

As DiaGem said, sometimes it''s added value! If you wanted a certain size, going for an estate piece can help. That''s what I did. You have to be pretty confident with what you''re doing to do this, and definitely have appraisers set up in advance (as I did), but it''s a great way to get a highly competive price on a diamond. The trade-off for me is that mine in particular is non-certed. Again, that does not bug me. The cut is perfection, the clarity is wonderful. The colour is lower, but I''m okay with that. I wouldn''t hesitate to go this route again. I know my stone was a "pre-upgrade" stone. But it''s mine now, and that''s all that matters. Someone went from a 1.77RB to something even bigger. My gain.

Hahaha I never thought about it like that! I think I''m actually going to keep my original e-ring forever. It''s going to be a beautiful piece and have a lot of sentimental value to it. But I''m sure in the future I will get an "upgrade" just without trading in the old one. I already have my eye on the Novo replica for a future ring.
