When to mention trade-in?

I''ve always been told, when buying a car... haggle the price down 1st... then introduce that you''ve also got a car you''d like to use as a trade-in....

Does the same apply at B&Ms to trading in rings?

I only ask b/c it''s been about 8 years since bf purchased the last ring, so we have no history with this shop as of yet...

That is what I did with my local jeweler when I purchased new diamond stud earrings. I got him all excited about the sale and established a price. Then I mentioned that I would need to trade in my old diamond studs in order to be able to close the deal. Of course I had only bought those eleven months earlier, but he agreed to give me the full purchase price as a trade-in.
