When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in pub

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I wear leggings, jeggings and yoga pants. I don't care what others think. I wear what I wear.
If I went around judging others for things I thought weren't appropriate, I'd be banned from society.
SPECIFICALLY, at airports, I am 100% sure I would be wearing leggings. In no way, no hell way, would I ever wear anything that wasn't 100% stretchy and comfy for an hours-long sitting session.

but, since we're on the topic of bashing people who wear stretchy pants.. How about a defense? Or at least reasoning?
Here's mine:
I wear leggings and jeggings bc I have trouble finding pants that fit.
I have a huge behind and hips, and a much smaller waist.
If I measured jeans by my thighs, butt, or hips, I'd wear a size 14. If I measure by my waist, I'd wear a size 8.
Yes, I have enough body issues to last me a lifetime, because standard sizing tells me I am shaped weird.
I can't find jeans that fit that don't cost less than $200, or near that with alterations.
I need my pants to have stretch because of these curves.
I agree that leggings shouldn't be see-through, like the ones Kim Kardashian is wearing in that photo.. but she might not know. I have worn my share of leggings that were too thin, without knowing, until someone pointed it out to me. I now wear 2 pairs-- one on top of another.

So I guess I'm also "trashy" to a few of you here, and maybe on the streets. Too bad I don't care about what others think, huh? Otherwise, I'd stop being so horrendous, and cover myself up in thicker materials so that you all don't have to suffer the horrible sights of me! 8)

So forgive me if I find this whole post insulting. Because I do.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I'm wearing yoga pants right now. I had to run to the grocery store.
Leggings I always always make sure I am covering my butt and then some!

Never knew how upset people got over yoga pants or leggings. I wear both all the time. It's comfy. And yes, I would wear yoga pants to fly. Why is that wrong?

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

Unless I'm flying to the Middle East, I basically refuse to fly in anything but leggings for long haul flights. They're easy to turn into PJs when I want to sleep, but I can layer a long tank and a cardigan and put cute shoes or boots on and I'm good to go. Actually, I have to drive for 8 hours tomorrow and that's basically what I'm going to wear.

I am on the "leggings are not pants" train, though - at least wear a shirt that covers your butt. Leggings get thin in back way quicker than anybody realizes, and it doesn't look great. Otherwise, though, I think they're great!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I don't really have a problem with people wearing yoga pants, but that might be because, as I shared earlier, it is so common in my town. (Which is NOT a trashy place, thankyouverymuch. It's quite lovely.)

I agree with previous posters who said it is all about wearing clothes that suit your body and less about specific clothing items. For example, I have a very large chest so I can't get away with wearing a lot of tops that someone who isn't so busty can wear just fine. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the tops. There are a lot of women who look wonderful in yoga pants, and more power to 'em!

P.S. If I had qtiekiki's figure, I'd wear leggings EVERY SINGLE DAY!

Women picking on women for whatever reasons: how someone wears their pants, how they wear their hair, how they put on their makeup, what they name their children, who they date, whatever. It will never stop.

So skinny people can wear leggings, because it doesn't stretch to the point of being see-through, and they don't have worries about too tight crotches showing camel toe.
But a fatter woman gets condemned. How dare she wear something made for skinny women? :nono:

This whole topic is one of the reasons why I choose to hang out with most men > most women. They don't care what people wear.
and now it's making me rethink if I really feel like this community is one I want to be a part of.

I understand what you mean. I commented yesterday to a stranger about how much I love her pea coat and how its been a struggle to find one as pretty as hers that looks good on me. You know what she said to me!!!??? "WHY DON'T YOU LOSE SOME WEIGHT?" I was appalled and totally humiliated...

There will always be people that bash on people like us Madelise. No matter what community we are in. This is just one thread that maybe I think didn't come off the way Ame wanted it to. At least that's what I am hoping. Cuz I don't want to think that she is that coldhearted.

A random strange put me down after I gave her a compliment... so these people are everywhere. My mom is actually one of the people that convinced me when I was little that every bad thing that ever happened to me and will happen to me in the future will be because I am fat. It's an ongoing battle Madelise. But know that you're not the only one! And that you are beautiful! I know its hard cuz I struggle with it everyday, but you gotta try! Plus, we have our SO's that love us very much!

Aww, you guys. There are lots of people who don't feel this way and don't criticize how others look/what they wear etc. I know that I surround myself with friends who value what is really important and I feel safe with my friends. We don't judge each other (at least on superficial stuff :cheeky: ) An online forum is different because you are not face to face and it is easier to write something that may come off wrong or something that may be hurtful. I am pretty sure that the majority of PSers are not catty that way and that this thread was not intended to be hurtful.

And fwiw, men can be just as if not more judgy about women and their appearance. I don't think one can generalize accurately regarding whole genders. I know more men than women who judge women by their appearance first and last.

Hugs to you both. Madelise sorry you were upset by this thread and yaytacori- sorry you had to deal with that woman and her nasty comments and also your mom should be ashamed of herself. :((

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I wear leggings all the time! At work, client meetings, going out to dinner, etc. Always with a long top though and either with boots when it's cold or ballet flats. As long as my top covers my butt, I'm good. I don't like leggings with cropped/short shirts. I do wear yoga pants to run errands in. And I love lululemon  (not a SAHM here, no kiddos in this house) I guess it just all depends on your body type and if that look works with your body. If you can rock it, then go ahead!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

Are you guys maybe taking this the wrong way? See thru pants don't look good on anyone, big or small. It boils down to the material, and I think that's where most of the criticisms were. Certain materials are so thin that even a supermodel will look like they're cheeking. And the dreaded cameltoe seems to happen more often with thinner materials too! All that can be avoided with thicker materials.

I do my best to buy thicker yoga pants with no sheen because this one pair was slightly shiny and it gave the appearance of being see thru, and nobody bothered to tell me. I saw it one day while bent over in front of a mirror (in yoga class, people, get your dirty minds out of the gutter), and was horrified because it looks like I was cheeking the girl behind me. Now I make sure my pants are thicker and pass the light test, and I wear them everywhere. I hate jeans.

I hate pantyhose and haven't worn them in over 15 years at least. That's why I love leggings- they are so comfy and great as tights with so many outfits. But I only wear one pair at a time. And spanx- no thanks!!!!

Fortekitty- I hate jeans too- thought I was the only one.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

Speaking of leggings, wanna know my secret? I LOVE Old Navy's maternity low rise leggings. They are the most comfortable leggings ever and I have tried a ton of pairs in the past few years. People that know me get a kick out of the fact that "I" wear maternity leggings, I'm the least kid/maternity/pregnancy interested person on the planet. But I don't care, those leggings are so amazing! Okay cat is out of the bag, but trust me, go get some! hehe

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I don't think yoga pants are trashy so long as the material is high quality, dense and skims the body. Half of NY women wear them around and if you don't look closely, they just look like kickin' figure flattering black pants. Plus, they give you a great butt!

I wouldn't wear leggings without a dress or long tunic over them, but I've seen leggings look amazing on women otherwise. Usually airports are a mish mash of people from all walks of life and I don't think most people care about how they look when traveling.

If you've got the body, most things will look great so long as you aren't showing too much or being inappropriate. What's the difference between high end yoga pants and black dress pants with stretch?

I'm small so I tuck myself into a ball on planes and go to sleep, or I sit with my legs folded against my chest. Jeans don't allow me to do that, so I always wear yoga pants on flights. My yoga pants are thicker and loose fitting tho, and I do the floor check. If I plop down onto the floor, can you see any skin? If so, I need different yoga pants.

Rule of thumb: If people can see cameltoe, crack, and cheeks, it's time to put on something different.

This. And it's not about styles or size, because skinny girl wearing too small jeans can have these issues, too, so no need to pick on the yoga pants.

Just a sidenote about the see through- I think KK may be a victim of the flash here. Some black or dark fabrics are prefectly opaque until a camera flash- like the black not-skin-tight sweater I wore to a holiday party last year. Totally fine until I saw all the taken-with-flash pictures that clearly showed my white bra underneath. :errrr:

My favs are from ON too! I wear the ones that fold down at the waist, and when I get cold on flights, I fold the waist band up and it covers my belly and keeps me warm. They're good for buffets too. http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=84254&vid=1&pid=633125332
I'm wearing those now! They are thick enough for fall weather and comfy!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I think there are two issues at play here, if I am correct. First there is the issue of whether they are flattering when someone is wearing a a short tight top paired with leggings and should people be walking around like that. I don't think that is a great look for incredibly thin or heavier women. Yes, if you have more parts hanging out, or visible panty lines or the dreaded camel toe, that just makes it worse. And i speak as a size 10/12 woman, who does not think everyone has to be a size 2. I also have trouble finding pants that fit.

Second, there is the issue that people don't ever make any attempt to dress up and act dignified in public--be it church, work, flying etc. Is there any event or occasion where people put any effort in their appearance? I read an article some time ago where it stated that each article of clothing has gotten cheaper for people to purchase now than they were 30, 40 years ago, so making some attempt to look slightly dressed up should not impossible. People wear jeans to church, so workout gear to the airport is a no brainer. I have seen people in pj pants and slippers, in the airport, people (especially teens) sprawled out on the floor laying on their pillows. I say, pull it together. And this is not canceled flight time, just regular behavior.

I was in New york a few months ago and I was embarrassed by a lot of the tourists--men and women. But i did see a big contingency of women wearing tight leggings, white socks, tennis shoes, fanny packs (im serious, no stereotype) and unflattering oversized t shirts that still didn't cover their backsides. It just looks sloppy and I think you could find alternatives that are just as comfortable, suited to a rounder figure, not expensive, but slightly more dignified for a full grown adult. At least put some thought into it! If they weren't wearing leggings they were wearing these horrible pleated shorts. It was seriously an episode of what not to wear. We stayed at the downtown hilton and people were coming into the elevator carrying their shoes, walking barefoot, and I don't think they were wasted. Seriously, I had blisters from walking too but sometimes, suck it up.

My cousin coming to our grandfather's funeral in ratty yoga pants and wet hair just spoke to how she is rude and disrespectful in general. She lived down the street and never visited him so this was just icing on how she felt, as it were.

Er ... yes, they do, just from a slightly different perspective. I've heard far too many men comment on the ****ability or lack thereof of random strangers: the fact that women internalize that misogyny and use it against other women is sad, but not unique to the gender.

The other day, DH and I were at a restaurant and a girl came in wearing extremely extremely and Imean extremely low waisted jeans and a loose crop top that ended right under her boobs. A bunch of guys turned and I even heard one guy say I'd f**** that. It's 40 degrees and below here by the way...

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

And having read the whole thread, now to address the topic proper ....

I'm a leggings hater, not because the sight of people's bodies offends me (HAES, people), but just because I think they're ugly. A great pair of legs is a great pair of legs - so just wear a short skirt already! And in my book, that goes for men and women alike.

I'll also say, I really miss the days of people dressing for the occasion. I went to the opera a few years ago, and sat behind a dude in a wife-beater tee. I went to a performance art thing the other day, and was the only person there who bothered to dress up. It just makes me sad that this nice means of self-expression - self-adornment! - is going the way of the dodo.

P.S. - Madelise, I have figure issues similar to yours. Wearing full skirts has made my life so much easier. Pants were either a stone bitch to shop for, or they emphasized exactly the wrong elements of my figure, but a nice full skirt to make my waist look even smaller? V. flattering.

Ditto! I think the issue here is you taking this so personally, not that "Women are SO CATTY, AMIRITE?!!" If you're confident in your choice of clothing, own it. I wear whatever I want, and I don't care if people on a web forum or IRL like it or not. I am a total Ugg hater but after ruining my favorite Ugg slippers that are no longer made, I broke down and bought a regular pair of Ugg boots. And...I JUST WORE THEM TO THE GROCERY STORE. I broke my own rules. And if people wanna judge me, I don't care!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I'm honestly really surprised how much some of you hate leggings and yoga pants. I wear both. For comfort and because I think I look good in both. I could honestly care less if anyone feels different. None of my leggings are see through mainly because I check before I purchase. I have thicker legs and would never ever try to fit jeans into a pair of tall boots, THAT looks sloppy. I wear my leggings with nice tall boots and a sweater or nice shirt with a scarf....and a lot of times, it doesn't cover my ass because damn it, I have a nice one!! I will have to find a photo of a typical outfit I wear as proof that leggings can be worn properly without looking trashy. As for my beloved yoga pants, they're pretty far from trashy too, I buy my yoga pants at lulu as well as a lot of my clothes. Take a walk into that store, NOTHING trashy about it and even with that said, it boils down to HOW you wear it.

I fully plan on wearing my leggings to thanksgiving dinner, that's for sure.
