When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in pub

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I think there's a difference between leggings and jeggings. Jeggings are usually made from a thicker material that doesn't become see-through and helps smooth down some of the less flattering parts of a woman's legs. They're a lot more like skinny jeans than leggings/tights. I don't have the figure for them, but I don't think they look bad on women who do, especially tucked into boots like qtiekiki showed. I was specifically referring to leggings or tights (not jeggings or skinny jeans) when I said they're not pants!

Yoga pants...I can see both sides of the issue. I've been known to wear a sweatsuit out at times (specifically on the way to my favorite massage place and back), so I can see how yoga pants would be similar. I think if you're going to the gym or something, all bets are off and you can wear whatever you're working out in. No point in changing just for the ride/walk to the gym and back.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I don't have a problem with yoga pants generally but leggings? All I can say is I've been tempted to start a thread like this many a time.

The problem is not with leggings per se but with how they're worn. Sometimes they're worn in a way that just provides too much information IYKWIM. I don't care how fit you are or how great your body is... I don't need or want to see your every curve, nook, and cranny. I don't happen to think that's misogynistic, by the way... I don't want to see Kenny or Danny's every curve, nook, and cranny either.

And if that makes me an old fuddy duddy, fine, I can own that!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I agree with madelise on everything, except the wearing of double leggings. :-)

I'm sorry but that's kinda silly. if you wear the right size you shouldn't be able to see every nook and cranny...ew.

Ah, but so many people don't wear the right size. I've seen way too many labia of leggings wearers. One camel toe was so bad I almost told her, but I figured she had to be able to feel it, so I just kept my mouth shut.

For the love of all that is good in the world, do NOT do an image search for 'camel toe' with the safe search function off! :errrr:

Er ... yes, they do, just from a slightly different perspective. I've heard far too many men comment on the ****ability or lack thereof of random strangers: the fact that women internalize that misogyny and use it against other women is sad, but not unique to the gender.
This.

I'm laying in bed and just laughed so loud and so hideously that DH came running in to see if I was ok. Anytime I've ever worn pants of this nature was for working out, and I was so paranoid of this I wore a thin and short pad to uh...make myself look like a Barbie.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

So I came home after work and looked at my tighter yoga pants that have never given me cameltoe. Apparently the seam doesn't run down the middle. My old ON yoga pants have this triangle shaped material where the middle seam is, so no riding up! Down side is, if your legs are wide open during a stretch it looks like you split your pants and patched them up.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I'm really sorry if what I said came off as sounding catty and upset anyone. I would never be rude to anyone over their choice of what to wear. However, I feel like an Internet forum is a place to honestly express your personal opinion and I truly don't think it's appropriate to wear something on the street that you can see your underwear through. I didn't even consider weight a factor. This girl is tiny and i dont think that her thong showing is a good look:

Granted, that outfit is probably ok when her arms aren't raised, but it's at least borderline too short. If I were wearing leggings that sheer I would wear wear a top/dress that was long enough to cover my underwear

I don't have a perfect body--I have fit issues too and I'm really sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings.

I'm with you 100%, tuffyluvr. That kind of thing shouldn't happen, no matter how good your body is!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

Rule of thumb: if it's not see-through and you don't see camel toe, I say it's fine. I wear yoga pants all the time (or workout tights/running tights, with the gusset crotch so that no camel toe happens). Honestly, they're comfortable! I would never wear them for nights out, dinners, nicer places, or work of course, but running errands or going over to a friend's to hang out or flying - why not?

Now, I work in an environment in which I interact with a lot of teens, and I have definitely seen at least one girl wearing see through black tights with a black thong underneath... you can imagine. I wanted to pull her aside and tell her that Blair Waldorf says, "Tights are not pants!!!"

ETA: You don't have to imagine! Tuffylover's pic is basically what I saw.

ETA 2: Fortekitty, that's a gusset crotch!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

Huh. This thread has been enlightening.

I'll give my input: I wear both "yoga" pants and leggings, in public. Today, I wore black leggings with a pressed white blouse (long scarf, riding boots, and almost-to-my-knees sweater) to climb in and out of and all around in three giant plate glass storefront windows to dress them for the holidays. If I had worn my regular jeans or cords, every passer-by would have seen my coin slot.

I wore black cotton full-bottom undies underneath my black cotton plus 2% spandex leggings. I asked my husband a year ago when I purchased my leggings whether he could see through them under several lighting conditions. I am not a size zero. Today the leggings came in very handy when I was trekking up and down two long flights of stairs in a very old building, and while climbing around in a window (working).

I see young and old ladies all the time wearing black knit pants. Some look appropriate (not see through, etc.) and some look trashy (see-through, as in I can see your butt cheeks as well as your whatever colored thong/g-string/panty). At the end of the day, though, I really don't have time to give a sh*t what people are wearing. I have plenty of stuff going on in my life and mostly can't be bothered with worrying about how others are presenting themselves. Unless, of course, someone paid me to do so. ;))

Leggings I always always make sure I am covering my butt and then some!

Never knew how upset people got over yoga pants or leggings. I wear both all the time. It's comfy. And yes, I would wear yoga pants to fly. Why is that wrong?

Women picking on women for whatever reasons: how someone wears their pants, how they wear their hair, how they put on their makeup, what they name their children, who they date, whatever. It will never stop.

So skinny people can wear leggings, because it doesn't stretch to the point of being see-through, and they don't have worries about too tight crotches showing camel toe.
But a fatter woman gets condemned. How dare she wear something made for skinny women? :nono:

This whole topic is one of the reasons why I choose to hang out with most men > most women. They don't care what people wear.
and now it's making me rethink if I really feel like this community is one I want to be a part of.

I don't think it's a fat vs. skinny issue. Stretch is stretch and unless you're skin and bones, there's going to be stretch to the fabric. I'm a very petite person, but trust me, tights would stretch on my butt and they would be see through.

I don't think this thread is about hating on women who aren't skinny or whatnot. That said, I love my tights (when paired with longer shirts) and yoga pants. :)

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

Legging have been around for a while, no? With short boots and long sweaters in the winter?

They ARE comfortable and warm which is why I wear them; but I don't wear them with short tops. I don't think I've seen see-through leggings but honestly, it took me a while to catch the thong in the picture above. So it may be that I don't notice these things as much.

I kinda agree with Circe though about people not dressing up more. My particular bête-noire is baggy sweatpants at a nice restaurant. It just looks so sloppy. I get comfort but it just so doesn't go with the surroundings.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I don't wear leggings or yoga pants, and I really dislike the look. I know lots of other people love it though, or it wouldn't be so popular. My husband and I always have a sly laugh when we're in public and see young girls tripping around in leggings in lieu of pants (with short tops, everything crystal clear). "Oh my goodness, I think she forgot her pants this morning. Where are her pants?"

Take my opinion with a grain of salt though. I live in jeans and tshirts, no fashionista here.

This. And it's not about styles or size, because skinny girl wearing too small jeans can have these issues, too, so no need to pick on the yoga pants.

Just a sidenote about the see through- I think KK may be a victim of the flash here. Some black or dark fabrics are prefectly opaque until a camera flash- like the black not-skin-tight sweater I wore to a holiday party last year. Totally fine until I saw all the taken-with-flash pictures that clearly showed my white bra underneath. :errrr:

Good point about the flash. Although I still say that there are leggings that are thicker and less prone being see-through with or without flash.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I don't wear leggings in public because I'm too self conscious to expose... but man, I love em. SO comfortable. Way better than baggy pants. I kinda want to wear some right now, after reading this thread :cheeky:

"How she wants to wear her clothes and express herself is her decision."

This may be because I'm old enough to be the mother of so many here . . .
It might be because I was raised to dress for the activity or event . . .
It is possible that the world truly is as "give a shit" as the clothing today suggests . . .

But, if everyone is "expressing" themselves, why does everyone look alike and wear the same basic outfit?

We talk as if we used to (in the olden days  ) expect conformity in dress and manner, and look at how we stifled creativity. Now, everybody is free to choose their own enlightened path of dressing for comfort, and, look!, see how we turn those stereotypes on their heads? Not.

If everyone wears yoga pants (or the upscale uniform in Haven's neighborhood), hoodies, scarf origami, leggings, boots, ballet flats, etc., then where is the nonconformity? Where is the expression?

Lemmings in leggings. There isn't anything wrong with that, I suppose. Just don't expect to be considered unique.

And, no, the gal referred to in the quote above was wearing her clothes in a way that was not entirely her own business. When you dress to get attention, especially sexual attention, the attention guarantees that you are no longer keeping your 'business' to yourself.

Yeah, it has. I had no idea what a camel toe is and now am just totally grossed out! You know, I don't actually look THERE on women too often so um, well, hadn't really evaluated who was showing one and who has not been. But, yeah, I'm grossed out. I double checked my pants before I left the house yesterday afternoon! Camel-free zone.

:cheeky: Yeah, I definitely wear leggings to work out in, but I only buy the ridiculously expensive Lululemon ones with a gusset crotch to prevent camel toe. Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I don't ever wear leggings, but I love yoga pants and probably wear them more often than I wear jeans. I work in a bar, so it's a casual environment, but if I worked in the corporate world, I'm sure I wouldn't wear them as much. My favorite ones are Victoria's secret boot cut ones, and they are not see through. I like the fold down waist ones as well, and probably have more than 10 pairs of them! I will never wear the ones that say pink on them though. I don't want that or any other saying across my butt. And I don't want to see princess or whatever written across anyone else's butt either!

People at work are staring at me because I can't stop laughing at this, it's so true though  . I do wear leggings myself but my friend told me the rule for leggings is that the bottom of your top has to at least meet your fingertips when you're standing up straight. So I go by that rule.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I really like the Land's End Starfish pants. They skim, but do not cling. http://www.landsend.com/pp/womens-starfish-refined-stretch-pants~219545_59.html The fabric, though not thick, is very opaque and refined feeling. Soft, soft and so nice. I wear these running errands, and do not care. I see them as equivalent to jeans. Casual.

As far as air travel goes, so long as coach stays as snug as it is right now, I don't think it's reasonable to expect people to get dressed-up like they used to way-back-when. Leggings, sweats, pajama pants, whatever.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

LV, I just looked at the link you gave. I love the pants! I'd definitely wear these instead of leggings (I don't have the body type for leggings or anything similar). I usually change into casual pants like the starfish ones or yoga pants when I get home from work. Do you think they'd be okay to wear to work or are they too casual (good for running errands and hanging out at home only)?

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I have a pair of leggings, but only wear it at home - perhaps it's because I already have four wide leg jeans which I'm completely comfortable in that there's no sense to get more stuff to try. Also, if I'm out and about doing groceries or shopping and need to sit down somewhere, leggings are so thin that it feels too intimate to sit on any surface.

Also made the mistake of getting onto a crowded tram once dressed in long t-shirts and leggings. Very crowded, classic textbook example of "packed like sardines" tram. Never again.
