In the airport last night, DH and I were noticing that almost every female under about 50 was wearing yoga pants or leggings as pants and in most cases we could see EVERYTHING! I was cringing for these women bec I get comfort but.. Wow.

I don't find them comfy necessarily, not more than jeans. But I just thing it's odd that they have completely overtaken regular pants even in some workplaces that are not gyms!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

Yup. I also noticed that leggings are really popular with college kids too.
I remember watching some TV show on style (I think it's What not to wear or something similar!) and the stylists said when wearing leggings, remember it is not supposed to be pants and to always wear a top that's long enough to cover your butt because you don't want too much to be revealed!!! I find it so true, except I seem to see more people just wearing it like as if it were pants/jeans.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I don't know, but I have also seen it in public. I am repulsed by it and I consider it to be extremely trashy.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I hate this too. I wish the teen and twentysomething girls would listen up: LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS! The only way I find it acceptable is under a short dress (possibly too short to be worn without them) or a really long top, but butt exposure in leggings is just not cool.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I think it's less repulsive on a teen and twenty something than a thirty plus!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

Well, looks like I'm "extremely trashy" then because I frequently wear yoga pants to go grocery shopping or fly in. I don't find jeans nearly as comfortable, especially on a six-hour flight.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

How 'bout pajammas as "daywear"? I hear college girls show up for class in pj bottoms, camisoles and hoodies. And we've all seen it at the grocery store. We had a thread on that, as a matter of fact.

If you go to the "People of Walmart" site, you'll find some folks eschew even the most rudimentary of pants. They'll just show up in their unmentionables and call it dressed.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

Guilty! I'm pregnant though so I have a good excuse...but probably look even worse than the women you came across.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I have a 17 yo, and when we recently went shopping for jeans, the big thing out now is "jeggings"...a combo of jeans and leggings. So you are going to see them a lot this year because that is what the stores are selling for jeans this year! Fortunately for my daughter, she weighs about 95 lbs. and looks great in everything! We did only buy long tops, though!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I'm not sure if they know that you can see through them but it is not something I want to see either. I don't wear them at all and I'm not bothered by people who wear the ones that are not see through. However, you do see the sheer ones more often and I guess they figure if they don't wear underwear you can't tell but unfortunately they are sadly mistaken.

Jeggings had been around for the past couple of years, but not all of them are made the same. I have a pair that looks and feels like jeans, but just super stretchy and comfy. I do wear leggings with tunics and boots. I just think the girls/ladies need to make sure that the leggings are thick and not see-through.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

Leggings and tights are not pants. I agree that it looks odd when they are worn as such.
People of Walmart is awesome.
Yoga pants are fine. I assume the wearer is on his/her way to yoga, or is going for a casual look.
I wear my baggy yoga pants on the plane. For a 14 hour flight home I don't care how I look.

Unless someone is flashing their dangly bits, I don't mind what people wear. If I see someone wearing what I think is particularly nice, particularly nasty, or very unusual, I'll look at the outfit for a couple of extra seconds. But that's about it.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I haven't ever seen see-through ones!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

Do women who wear them ever look in the mirror before going out? (I wonder that about many things people put on.)

Not only not-transparent, but if you don't have the shape for them, wear something else! Roller-thighs, bellies, & wide sloppy butts are not made for leggings, please! To me, it's a matter of a little self-respect to look like you halfway care about your appearance. It's possible to dress inexpensively, still comfortably, and appropriately for your particular shape.

Comfort isn't everything; going nude is probably most comfortable if it isn't cold but it's not recommended (except in San Francisco).

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I teach college and I see this a lot with my students. Many of them wear leggings with short tops and high boots.

DH and I live in an affluent area where many women are SAHMs, and it seems that it is very *in* to wear yoga or workout clothes during the day. Lululemon items are super popular, as are the more mainstream workout brands. It's like the town outfit or something. Of course, many of these women also spend hours at the gym every day, so it makes sense I suppose. I mean, these ladies are BUFF.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

My husband always says it is an excuse for women to wear skin-tight pants. I tend to agree.

Put me on the trashy list too! :lickout:

I wear yoga pants flying and to my 4 hour lectures in school!

Jeans are not comfortable for flying to me or in lecture. I think if they fit correctly there is nothing trashy about them.

In fact, I think that dressing for your size is more important. I see plenty of larger women wearing clothes not fitting them correctly and to me, that's much more "repulsive" than someone wearing yoga pants...well of course...as long as they fit correctly and are NOT see through!

To each his own though!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I guess they are OK for the college kids and women who can pull it off. At my daughter's college, some of them show up in pajamas.

But for others, please look in a full length mirror, both front and back, before leaving the house. If you have tummy fat or a lot of junk in the trunk, they are not for you.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I believe women should dress with class if they expect to be treated with class. Simple as that.

I get Sooooo tired of women asking "Why do I always attract the wrong kind of man?" while showing off massive quantities of cleavage/boob/butt. Gee, I wonder.

But if Kim Kardashian is wearing see-through leggings, it must be okay, right?

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I'm 24 and I think leggings as pants (and especially jeggings!! *shudder*) are the worst idea ever. I have no interest in showing everyone my business. I occasionally will wear them "nakies" but always under a long top, enough to cover my butt. And the front of course. I do think they are rather comfortable so I could see wearing them around your own house or while traveling, but if you're wearing them out in public (i.e. traveling) please wear a long top with it!! Also, one of the worst pics I have seen floating around the internet was a walmart employee wearing nude colored leggings...as pants. Oh my god it was a terrible sight!!! :errrr:

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

Haven, those lulu lemons are popular at the playground too. You'll be seeing a lot of those once your peanut comes along!
I looked them up once because I saw them all the time. They're expensive! I guess they're the SAHM status symbol.

See through? Mine definitely aren't see through. Maybe that happens when they're stretched to their limit.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

LOL. Jeggings are not all horrible. You have to get the right/good ones.

Here are two of mine... I think they look fine. Feel free to tell me otherwise.

I've not seen the see-through kind either! There seems to be a lot of designs of pants that fit under the "yoga pant" definition, as I am wearing some baggy ones now. They don't show anything. Normally, I only wear jeans but decided to wear these because I'm sick... I went to the store in them... uh oh!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I love leggings and wear them as tights with short dresses and tunics. Not see through and I love the look. I agree they are not pants though so should not be worn with short tops etc. But I think they can look great with short dresses and tunics and get lots of compliments from women when I wear them.

qtiekiki, I think you look great in your jeggings!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

Ughhhhh!!! I call this look, "¿dónde están tu pantalones?". And I like to say that the rule of thumb for leggings should be: if they don't have a zipper or pockets, treat them like tights. Tights and leggings are fine with a dress, miniskirt or tunic that covers your butt. You wouldn't leave the house wearing a hip-length tshirt with control-top tights, would you?!?! Those are not pants! You need pants--leggings are not pants--skinny jeans, jeggings, whatever ARE pants. They have a fly, they have pockets, that is what makes them PANTS. Learn it, live it, spare the population from having to see your buttcrack and/or g-string when standing under bright light.

Yoga pants are ok by me as loungewear, as long as they are very opaque. But they should never be worn with a very fitted top unless they have a flared leg. Runners tights or yoga pants that are skinny and fitted to the ankle can be worn as loungewear with a tunic, or with a fitted top for working out.

I have a couple pairs of Lululemon pants and they fit great and are very flattering. I wear them as loungewear sometimes--for walking the dog, running errands, etc, but when did ppl get so lazy on dressing for the airport? Why is it okay to wear grimy, schlubby pajamas? What's so wrong with jeans and a tshirt?!?!

End diatribe...

Totally acceptable in my book--and very cute! You've got a great body, and you balanced the skinny jeggings perfectly with boots and a top that's not skin-tight. Those boots are fab, by the way! Who makes them?

Jeggings may not be for everyone, but I, personally, love them!

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

My cousin wore ratty looking yoga pants to our grandfather's funeral :nono: :errrr:

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

Qtiekiki, you look fabulous!! That is a cute look, not sloppy at all.

Re: When did leggings and yoga pants replace actual pants in

I'm small so I tuck myself into a ball on planes and go to sleep, or I sit with my legs folded against my chest. Jeans don't allow me to do that, so I always wear yoga pants on flights. My yoga pants are thicker and loose fitting tho, and I do the floor check. If I plop down onto the floor, can you see any skin? If so, I need different yoga pants.

Rule of thumb: If people can see cameltoe, crack, and cheeks, it's time to put on something different.

The left one is Frye that I just got and might be returning, as I ordered another style to try and will decide which I like better. The right one is Vince Camuto; I got them for $90.
