This ring belongs to my friend and it was the first time I had ever seen a diamond ring in person. What is your opinion of it?

I am looking to buy myself a diamond ring now after seeing it and after reading posts on this forum, I realised that the proportions of a diamond are important. Do you think the proportions on this ring are good? It wouldn't let me upload the video so here is a gif.

Far from being an expert,

It could be the lighting, the main stone’s center seems to be pulling in a lot of the metal color from the setting below- which would indicate leakage instead of light return.
As with anything - there’s multiple parameters to choose from in prioritizing, maybe light return won’t be someone’s top choice and that’s ok. Maybe it’s clarity or face up size. Everyone’s different.

It will be interesting to hear what, if anything, the prosumers in here do say. But I think you’ll need to provide more than this gif.

You received permission from your friend to post their ring and ask? I know I would not appreciate it if someone I knew did that to one of my rings without asking first. Maybe your friend is a better human.

Enjoy your journey in buying yourself a diamond :)

Thanks for the feedback. I'll ask my friend if I can take some pictures. She did give me permission to post - she loves her ring and doesn't care about people's opinion!

Proportion wise I personally like rings that enhance the center stone. Personally I would have used a thin setting with that size diamond. The diamond cut would be a concern too.
I would do a lot of research and learn about how a diamond can look when it is well cut.
It is a big world of choices when it comes to rings and diamonds! Find something you love!

I really like the setting but dont think the center stone is well cut. It's not "terrible" by any means, but also doesnt look great.

I wouldn't focus on what your friend's ring looks like.

Focus on what you want and your budget and go from there.

Plus, she may say she doesn't care what people say, but honestly, people can be very honest about diamond cut, quality, and the whole package in a way you wouldn't be expecting here. Leave her ring out of the picture and let her enjoy it, and instead, focus on your potential purchase.

I think her ring is lovely!

If only from this video I would not want to buy a diamond cut the same as hers. It looks like there is significant leakage in the center. It could totally due to poor lighting conditions but based on this video, NO. There are many beautifully cut diamonds out there. If you want help searching, please provide your budget and desired carat, shape and any color or clarity requirements and people will do searches for you.

It is good, but not good enough for many PS members here.

Thank you for all of the feedback. This is a zoom in of the diamond that she sent me.

I like her ring and for my own ring, I'd like one that sparkles a lot. The colourful sparkles are what I like best. Which proportions would be best for this? I will be saving up for the ring so budgeting is not an issue.

We have an Education Pull-Down at the top of the Pricescope page full of lots of good information.

You can also search for Ideal/Excellent cut stones using the Pricescope Search Engine located under the main
menu. Look for stones that score EX in the HCA column. If you have a specific stone you want to know about
(that you found on your own) you can use the HCA tool located under the Tools option to see how it scores.

Better than I expected from the GIF.
Still maintain "not good enough" for most PS members, but close.
