What's up with this OEC?

I guess this OEC is suffering from severe nailhead. Is that why the centre is so dark or are there inclusions, dirt or black camera reflections...? Is this diamond beyond salvation or can it be polished or slightly recut?

I have emailed them about the stats but don't think I will get an answer until sometime next week. All I know now is that it is 3 ct. I am guessing it has a rather deep cut.

Or more pics?

From this one picture, it looks like there are inclusions under the table, as well as leakage maybe... but really, I think it's impossible to tell because the whole photo looks unnatural, like it has been extremely Photoshopped. Can you get more natural photos of it?

Yes, I have asked for more pictures. It looks very strange, like there is a cloud of dark inclusions in the centre. I can't really figure it out. Why would the inclusions all be in the middle? I wish it was just some kind of dirt so I could give it a good bath and it would look super clean :-) I think it had the potential of being a nice large stone with a pretty pattern if it hadn't been for that black cloud in the middle... Guess I just have to stop dreaming... :-)

I wonder if it could be some kind of weird girdle reflection? I hope the experts chime in! This is curious.

Could be a dirty pavilion and leakage (so you see the dirt). Or it could be girdle reflection if the girdle is thick and dirty.

I would not buy as it is, and a recut is risky. You need it loose to properly evaluate potential.

I know this is not a "fisheye diamond" but I have never seen any diamond that resembles a fish's eye more than this.

It's as if it's two different stones. The crown area looks so good but the under table area looks terrible.

I really wonder about pavilion dirt! I have had OECs come to me with -- literally -- a millimeter of grime on the pavilion :knockout:

That's what I thought too. Such a stark contrast.

I wouldn't bet on it being dirt, because of how big and expensive the stone is, and how nice the crown area looks. I'm guessing the ring has been cleaned and made to look its best. The edited-looking photo also suggests that care was taken to make the stone look good.

Thanks Dreamer, JulieN, Gemfever and Fortekitty for your comments! I wasn't really looking for a 3 ct OEC but the price looks so promising that if I know that a little polish or so would make it look nice it would definately be worth it. It really is dr Jekyll and mr Hyde... I so wish it is just 100 year old dirt that they haven't been able to clean because the diamond is set in a ring. But you can still clean a diamond underneath the table with chemicals, right?

Thanks for the link Ariel! I hadn't seen it. It is very pretty but unfortunately over budget :-(

There's a fish somewhere missing it's eye.

You are probably right Gypsy. Could it be a combination of fisheye and dirt (making it worse) and can a fisheye be recut or polished away?

Yes, in some cases. It really depends on the stone and the inclusions whether or not the spread/weight loss would be worth the recut. If it's right at a carat mark, usually it's not worth the devaluation. If it's at 3.38 or something, and it can be cut... then it might be worth it.

Stone by stone determination.

Thanks for your advice, Gypsy! I emailed Ari at SingleStone and he thought it was shallow and in that case it wouldn't be a good candidate.
I am expecting to hear from seller within the next few days and also have a look and measure it. I think it is around 3 ct, but it hasn't been removed from the setting and measured so it is not exact.
I will probably pass on this one. I was considering it because of the price but in the end it might not be worth it. A shallow stone will probably loose too much carat weight when recutting. Also, from the picture it doesn't look like it has the kozibe effect which I love.

I got some measurements from the seller. It is 9.7x9.7 mm and the depth is 5.2 mm. That is really shallow isn't it? Also it is M color VS. I will see it in person tomorrow I think and can post pics after that. But it doesn't look promising... :-(
