What's the most reputable online diamond site?

I've been doing a lot of reading about online diamond sites and I've come across quite a few of them, but wanted to see what the pricescope community recommended. From what I gather, it appears that the top 4 amongst this crowd are:

a) Brian Gavin Diamonds
b) James Allen
c) Good Old Gold
d) Whiteflash

I know it's best to go with sites that provide ASET images and hold their own diamond inventory/inspect stones themselves for eye-cleanliness, but was wondering if you had to rank the 4, which you'd recommend.

Also, is it generally considered better to buy your stone and setting from the same jeweler or does it not matter?

Many thanks!

Those are my top 4 diamond vendors with the services I like, and I have personally bought diamonds from both Good Old Gold and WhiteFlash with complete satisfaction! Brian Gavin did a recut of a family stone for me and it was very well done, too!

By all means try to get the diamond and setting from the same place. That way the stone comes to you set in a ring ready to be insured!

Thanks for asking this! I'd love to know also! I've come across ERD (engagementringsdirect.com) also, which is where I'm looking at to purchase. There is also BlueNile and other retailers such as Victor Canera or Steven Kirsch that have been mentioned to me. Thanks!

Victor and Steven are outstanding custom ring makers who will source stones for you. Victor is having his own antique style cushions custom cut but keeps a small inventory at this point. Blue Nile has a large inventory of mostly virtual stones, and they do not provide pictures or idealscope or ASET images (although one person here apparently paid to get some done) and that rules them out as far as I am concerned. ERD does carry some nice cushions and other stones, but I believe has a smaller selection that the other vendors already mentioned.

But as far as having an in house diamond inventory of ideal cut stones, I'd say GOG, WF, and BG are the three top vendors. Plus they have great trade-in policies. James Allen is partly owned by a diamond supplier so they have a lot of not great stones mixed in with the good ones. But they do have some great diamonds as well.

What is the issue with getting the stone and setting separate?

Most other jewelers will not cover a stone for damage during the setting process if they didn't sell it. The only way to deal with that is to use Jeweler's Mutual and provide the information they need on the setting and the loose stone and they will cover the stone during setting. Then you get a valuation on the finished ring and provide that to JM. It is just more trouble but it can be done. I just like it when I can have the ring sent to me completed and have the insurance begin the day I receive it and be done. JM is the only insurance we know of who will insure the loose stone during the setting process.

Getting it together is 1 usually cheaper and 2 safer as far as liability is concerned.

Good one!

FB, I think you have selected 4 of PS's more popular and favourite vendors for diamonds and settings. I have only purchased via BGD (of the 4 you listed) and was extremely happy with all of my items from them!

I've also purchased thru IDJewelryonline.com, and have had great success with them as well. Good luck!
