WOW....is this a testament to the beauty of pricescope, (or the sickness of pricescope,) that a marginally housebound stay-at-home-mom gal in SF perused the classifieds for jewelry on craigslist...when not in the market of course....and saw a ring...and remembered the ring...and it all ends up getting matched to a woman in canada who is at home...looking for a ring...

To be perfectly honest, I'll need to see the ring again to make absolutely the final call.

Maybe if so many eyes weren't watching me while I was trying it on oohing and ahhing, and if we weren't rushed by time constraints, I would have felt more comfortable and could possibly have heard the ring screaming,"Buy me, you fool!!!!"

When you're spending this much money, you have to be sure unless you're The Donald or someone like him.

I'm definitely not talking myself out of it (which is a great sign), but just want to view it again before I commit totally.

ETA: I also realize that if I "snooze" too long, I'll risk losing it which at this point is not a good thing.

So.... are you going to look at it again? You do realize this ring is still listed on Craig''s list? The seller is asking for people to make an offer. Maybe you can talk him down! If you don''t like the setting then you could always reset it - then you could make 3 diamond rings out of one!!!

I agree. It's just like selling your home, you may have someone very interested, but you keep showing it.

Unless the seller told you specifically that he was HOLDING it for you --OR-- you left a sizeable DEPOSIT with him ... I don't think you have much cause to be all

about him continuing his search for a motivated BUYER.

You know what *really* spurs re-negotiation? Other offers.

You are so right, wallermama, but he re-listed it the same day we drove to Buffalo to see it. With that timing, I have to admit, I am insulted. He knew of my situation with GOG right up front, he also knew that I wouldn''t be able to call GOG until the 29th, he could have at least waited until then to re-list...

who really cares when he relisted it. maybe the person who showed it to you told him you didn''t seem excited about it and he thought oh well i better relist it. who really knows what went on but i would not be personally insulted at all. quite frankly, in my humble opinion, you should just figure out if you want the darn thing or move on. you said you have to see it again before making a decision, did you already schedule another meeting to see it?

It''s not HIS fault you already BOUGHT a different stone. Your situation is of your own making & it''s none of his concern really. A PRIVATE seller doesn''t have to bend over backwards the way Rhino has ... because HE doesn''t have to worry about FUTURE business with you OR ANYONE for that matter.

Believe me, I understand why you would feel that way. It is a fine balance where you feel like you are in a relationship with a seller, whether it is a person or a store, and you feel there should be loyalty. I totally understand how you feel.

I just wasn''t sure if you knew that he never really stopped listing it; on Craigslist, your posting only lasts seven days, and you are forced to relist it every week or whenever you think about it.

He just needs to keep it up there in case you decide against the ring.

ditto, even when someone requests a second showing you still leave the house on the market, no sold sign in the yard until contracts are signed

it really shouldn''t matter whether or not he''s relisting it, you still have to decide if you even want it. Once you''ve agree and made a deposit then i can seem him pulling the listing. Are you going to have it shipped back so you can see it again?

Yes, you all provided lots of valid reasons why the seller has every right to re-list while we''re still negotiating and I swallowed the bait- hook, line and sinker ( sorry for all the cliches). In fact, I was angry enough to e-mail the seller to ask if, since he had re-listed the ring, he was open to further negotiation. (The answer was "no").

Now that you have me motivated, perhaps you could work on DH who definitely doesn''t want to go through that line-up at the border anytime soon. I know, I know that''s MY job, but you''re all SO GOOD AT IT!!!!

Is the seller a jeweler? Are you able to take the stone to an appraiser or anything to be sure about what you are getting? I would be quite concerned about it, as it is not like you can just send it back if you change your mind (or can you?)

I would certainly proceed with caution however nice the stone may appear to be.

The seller is with a large real estate investment company called Hines. From their site, it appears that they deal in commercial buildings.

I was not familiar with Craigslist before it was mentioned on PS as it is not as well known here in Canada as in the US. I think this seller had previously listed the ring on eBay and had also left it on consignment with at least one jeweler with whom I was in contact. I should add here that the ring became available after a broken engagement.

Before I asked to see the ring, it was appraised by Nancy Stacy, an independent appraiser with a great reputation in CA.

If I proceed with the transaction, it would be using escrow.com with the stipulation that I have a viewing period before the money is released to the seller.

I hope I''ve answered your questions, but if you see any red flags here, please let me know.

An update:

DH being the sweetie he is has agreed to go back to Buffalo for a final look at the 3c asscher ring before it goes back to CA. He has emphasized that this will be the last time he will travel all that way to "look at a small piece of old carbon". He has such a way with words. LOL

We''ll probably be going either tomorrow or at the beginning of next week. This time I hope there won''t be as many people looking over my shoulder. I''m also looking forward to taking more pics while we''re there.

Yep, I''m excited but also a bit nervous as this will be a lot of $$$ if I decide to buy it.

As a side-note, I just noticed that both Pearlman''s and DBOF are no longer advertising the Daniel K line

If I were you, I would make a list of things you didn''t notice/don''t remember from the first viewing. Things that are most important to you. Then zero in on them and don''t pay attention to anyone else. You''ve GOT to make this visit count.
