What is the point of an appraisal?

It allows an expert to advise you that the diamond is the correct one for the document, that the stone meets the technical criteria you might have, that there is nothing unreported or wrong with the stone since the grading lab document was created, and that the price you are paying meets your goals for value. Sometimes an appraiser protects the consumer from having a problem. Sometimes the appraiser protects the seller from having a problem.

It is a system for cautious buyers that works well. For impulsive buyers, just send the money!

In my case, mine was from a certified GIA gemologist and she verifed the EGL report, what the seller sold it to me as, what their formal written appraisal said and MOST IMPORTANTLY - NOT what the local jeweler appraisal said.
