First, I am a long time lurker who decided to come out of hiding. I have enjoyed all of the information PS has to offer. You all give such great advice, hence my decision to post. Please bear with me as I'm new at this and honestly a bit nervous (since you guys are all so awesome).

My husband and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary last year. He agreed to let me get a new ring. I went to a B&M store here with my husband with what type of ring I thought I wanted already in mind. We looked at only those type settings and purchased a ring. Four months later, I decided that it wasn't really what I wanted after all. So, I returned to the store, and though it was well after their 30 day return policy, they allowed me to trade it in on another setting (at a slightly higher cost since it was now pave and an e-ring and band vs. just e-ring). Well, here we are only 4 days later, and I'm not convinced this is the ring either.

So, here are my questions: Would I be pressing my luck to take it back and ask to try another completely different setting? Am I totally nuts to be this undecided? Would other trade persons be completely irritated by a customer like myself?

I think part of the problem is that my finger does not fit the sample size, and so I don't get to really see the finished product until it is set, sized, and on my hand. Is that a fair reason to change? Please help me! I think my husband is ready to kill me, and that's pretty bad since he is such a patient person.

I think you should go back, explain your conundrum to the store, and see what they will do to make you happy. You are obviously a loyal customer, and they probably wouldn't want to lose you. Try on every ring in the store, go home and sleep on it, and go back to see if your favorite(s) are still your favorites before deciding.

I understand your problem, because seeing all the lovelies on PS makes it hard not to want one of each! I have a classic solitaire so I can stack different bands for different looks, but I love halos with plain shanks, and all the gorgeous antique-style settings. In the end, though, a solitaire is just more 'me' as I am a pretty casual person with a casual lifestyle and pave and engraving wouldn't hold up to my abuse.

Oh, and if the samples don't fit your ring finger, could you try on a different finger just to get a feel for how it looks on your hand?

Good advice! I tried this last set on by putting it on my ring finger above the knuckle, but obviously that is not very effective. And I get soooo excited in the store that I forget to sleep on it and see what I feel the next day. The rings have all been lovely, but I keep thinking that I can do better, especially after looking at this site every day!

Simpsonade,
I too have huge fingers (12's) and can't ever try on a ring (other than a plain band) at any store.

Only trick I ever found was to hold the ring in my right hand above my left hand ring finger, move the ring up or down and squint, to see what it would look like on that finger!

And sizing is SUPER important with bigger fingers, cause you don't want the "muffin top" effect with a ring! :))

Thank you, Anne. I wear 7.25 to 7.5, and I think most of the ones I looked at were 6ish. I definitely am having a "muffin top" issue with this set, which I think is part of my displeasure. It is a beautiful set on its own, but the round halo looks like a spaceship hovering over my fat finger when it is on me, and I think it makes my finger look larger overall. I am truly sick over the whole affair. I feel so bad for putting everyone out. I even had a dream last night that I was being tested on diamonds at this store. Talk about issues taking over in your subconsciousness!

Aww, that's such a bummer! I like Anne's suggestion to visualize the ring on your finger. Another idea: buy some cheapie fakeys from Overstock.com or similar (there are celebrity bling-alike sites with a lot of fun fakeys!) since you can usually get them in larger sizes, and then test drive them in styles you like. I have a lovely 2 carat pear fakey that I like to put on for fun and imagine I can afford such a thing... :naughty:
