What ring size?

So my girlfriend and I went to a few different stores, towards the end I thought - "I should find out her ring size" so I asked a couple of stores to check her ring size.

3 stores, 3 different answers!

Each store used the little metal rings to check her size.

Store 1 - Zales = 5.5
Store 2 - Zales = 5 (their 5.5 was too big)
Store 3 - Tiffany = 5.25 was the guess. 5 was a bit snug, 5.5 was a bit loose.

Very surprised 3 stores would have 3 different results, each one using the standard ring size checker.

The woman at Tiffany said that they could use a 5.5 ring and then add 2 "beads" to the inside of the ring, which would make it a bit tighter.
Do all stores offer something like this?

So what size do you think I should be looking to get?
Im thinking 5.5 and then add those "beads" from a local jeweler? (easy to do? can it be done while I wait?)

Thanks

I would get her measured at the store where you plan to buy the ring, or let them measure a ring that she owns and fits her

Yeah, any jeweler can add sizing beads. I have them on my engagement ring and I love them. It keeps it from spinning and it fits better in both summer and winter. So i'd probably say go with 5.25 or 5.5, and add the sizing beads if necessary. Or have one of her rings measured and the new one made to match that one exactly.

Most people's ring size changes some over the course of the day, and in hot or cold weather. Which makes it even tougher to size a ring exactly right. Sizing beads IMO are great for that. I can't feel them and mine are particularly large since my ring couldn't be sized down (it's a fragile antique piece) and it is actually somewhere around two or three sizes too big without the beads.

Yeah, the smart thing to do would be to get her sized at the place I am planning on getting the ring from.
But I am most likely going to get a ring from the internet, so that would be tough.
She also does not wear jewelry so no other ring to compare the size to.

I think I will go with the 5.5 (which could be a bit big) then add the sizing beads, because from what I heard from the sales woman, the beads are removeable and cause no damage.

Thanks

When I was measured, I varied from a 4.75 to a ... 6. We went with the 4.75, which was the size given by the vendor from whom we purchased the ring. So I feel your pain.

HOWEVER -- not all sizing sets are the same. The thickness of the band makes you go up in size. In addition to the variation between sizing sets, the sets were of different thicknesses! I would look for a cheap ring (think flea market / dollar store) with a shank width equal to the shank width of the ER design. Then I'd send the cheapo ring to the internet vendor who is going to make the ring -- this is sure fire. I'd also shoot for "tight but comfortable" to prevent spinning.

... unless she had a lot of salt that day, had too much soda, didn't wear gloves and it was cold outside, or it was that time of the month ... :rodent:

ditto. while doing your searching take now ofsizes at each store- like you have- and go with the size that store said.

It depends how wide the band is - the thicker the band, the bigger a size you have to get.

But bear in mind that she will add another ring to her finger and maybe a third ring later on (therefore increasing the width of the bands on her finger), so you might want to save her the difficulty of sizing up later on.

I would get at least the 5.5 - not everyone likes sizing beads so maybe wait and get those later if it is too loose?

go for the 5.5. When she adds a wb the combo of the two rings will fit a little more snugly, and she will appreciate the extra space to manoeuvre

This! I'm usually a size 5.75 but if the band is on the thicker side I need at least a 6.25 instead.
