I have an heirloom ring and don''t know what the metal is so need your opinions. (sorry no pictures yet cos it''s in a safe in a bank.)

it is a filigree ring looks like the ones in faycullen
it has a rose cut diamond in the centre and three tiny diamonds on each side
very thin metal all over the mounting
has no stamp
belonged to my grandma''s mom and it should be at least 80 years old.

took it to two jewelry store, one said it was TIN. could it be? the other said it was STAINLESS STEEL.??

grandma says it was platinum.

HELP!

anyone?

Do you have a picture of the ring?

I don''t have a picture yet. but it is white metal with lots of workmanship. I just wonder if they would put a diamond in tin? and if it is platinum why no stamp? and what metal was used in 1930''s.
it looks like this one:

except that it has no halo and it is higher

If you really want to know, it''s probably best to take it to an independant appraiser. Try looking in the yellow pages, and look for one that is familiar with/specializes in heirlooms/old stones. That''s your best bet.

thanks for the advice but you see, I''m in Turkey so no independent appraisers here.
I''ve read that in mid 1900''s palladium was used widely. maybe?
any expert opinion?

I doubt its tin. Very much doubt. But, as always, I coudl be wrong.

Plat was highly used, as you stated, and it could be that, or it could be Palladium.

You can''t tell me in Turkey there are no independent appraisers!!! (I have no clue, but that just shocks me!)

I hope you figure it out. It it helps I have a ring like that from my grandmother and its plat. Good luck!
