Hi,

I'd like to know if anyone here can shed some light on what kind of stone do i have here. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It could be anything, really. Do you have any history on the ring? Has it been looked at by a jeweler or Gemologist? It's nearly impossible to I.D. something from a picture alone. Your best bet is it take it and have it looked at by a Gemologist, or a jeweler knowledgeable in Gemology.

Ditto.

It really could be anything.

I'm often happy to play 'Guess that stone', but to give any kind of valid statement of identity I would need to have the stone in hand. I suggest you take it to a gemmologist - or to a jeweller who is also a gemmologist (most are not and cannot identify most gemstones accurately).

The only thing I can tell for sure is that it is a very clean translucent blue cabochon. Other than that, it is anyone's guess. I cannot even ID if it is a natural stone or a synthetic from any pictures alone and no one should ever do so. The jeweller ot GG you bring it to should have some basic gemmology tools other than a 10x loupe to be able to ID the stone for you.

in the first picture I cannot even identify the shape! My guess is it is a half eaten mentos.

Thats odd!

In the first picture it looks almost dish shaped, with what seems to be a clear cutout in the middle, but when you look at picture #2, it obviously isnt dish shaped, its a cab. Not only that but the color and translucence of the stone appears much different from picture 1 to picture 2.

I dont even want to venture a guess.

Red Spinel,
The first picture threw me off initially as well until I realized the dome was not cut off the cabochon. It is merely reflecting the light source in front of it.

Thanks guys for the inputs. I should bring it to a local shop for inspection, just didn't really have the time for now. But i will. Here's another better pic i hope if it might help though.

Thanks

It sure does look like a star is present in that last shot...I wonder if that will give it away.... ;)) ;))

Yes, but then next comes the question of whether it is a natural or synthetic stone. :naughty:

Another thing.....someone told me that if you put a drop of water on top of it, the water drop should not break, but this one does. Is this a valid test for proving a real stone?

I have not heard of this water droplet test.

1. How good is the star, meaning
a. How strong does it appear?
b. How straight are the legs?
c. Are the legs even spaced and of the same length?
d. Is the star well centered?

2. Are you able to see the bottom of the stone?
a. Do you see anything stamped, perhaps the letter L?
b. Is the botom perfectly flat or is it uneven? Does it show stripes or lines of colour?
c. How clear is the stone?

3. Shine a torchlight on the stone and move it around in a circular path. Does the star follow the light and move around the cabochon?

Yes, the water droplet test. I have seen that before. It helps ID a stone based on how well a water droplet sits on a stone and what shape it holds.
Here is what Dr. Hanneman had to say when determining quartz vs. aquamarine.
"Clean the table (and I mean clean it well with a clean dry cloth) and place a small drop of water on the table. If it is quartz, the water will wet the surface and the drop will spread out. If it is aqua, or something else, the drop will form a small dome."

I would follow up on everything Chrono said! :read:

Just curious.. what markings are on the ring?
